Mike, You are right on point took my buick regal 2001 to 4 reliable Mechanics none of them could find the problem, So one day before i gave up no B.S bought a new oem mafs, and bingo passed emission, Warning bite the bullet buy a new one oem they will give you a life time warranty, If a code pops up it's the mafs they will give you your money back for real people! This man knows what he's talking bout. P.S Thanks Mike, P.S Bought mine at O'Reilly's parts you got nothing to lose and i changed everything new on the car.

The one you're pointing at using your finger is just the air temperature sensor. The actual hot-wire airflow sensor is actually inside of that pipe, you can see that tiny sensor only from a certain angle, it's very very tiny, u gotta use a bright light to see that.

Thank you. Everyone else only discuss cleaning the MAF sensor, which I've done three times now and the light keeps returning. I have a reusable air filter which I keep clean (and not OVER oiled and only use MAF cleaner. So I did what others suggest (review vac lines, etc) but when one suggested fuel pump or injector, I stopped since I like to repair, not throw new parts until I get it. This was the first to confirm that the sensor itself can go bad.

Keep in mind that a dirty sensor will also cause you vehicle to throw a “masked” check engine light caused by the MAF sensor, but because the chocking affect from not enough air for combustion, it can cause a misfire read on the check engine from a spark plug or coil pack. So because your codes might tell you #8 cylinder miss fired, it could actually be from the MAF sensor starving the engine from oxygen. Just an FYI

Can that effect bad o2 sensor readings.. I replaced my o2 sensor bank 2 .. but I still get p0056 o2 sensor codes.. my service engine soon light comes keeps coming on.. 😤

i hope that’s the case with me, i get both the maf code and misfire code, i just cleaned the maf but hopefully, it just needed a cleaning and if not a replacement, it did seem dirty. hopefully not a real misfire problem

The Nissan dealer in Duluth, GA; told me some years ago; that the "MAF" (Mass Air Flow) would cost $560.00 on my 1995 Nissan Maxima, plus labor. I said no and traded the car for a new one. Sadly, I now realize that they are rather cheap (at auto parts) and very easy to change. Wish I had done that; because that 1995 Maxima was the best car I EVER owned. Except for that damned "MAF" it was like brand new when it was 13 yrs old! And Yes I now know they NEED to be cleaned regularly on all cars and the SAME for the Throttle Body. For if not cleaned regularly; all hell is coming to you. Oh indeed yes. Cleaning them (use ONLY CRC TB cleaner and CRC MAF cleaner) brings the car back to running like it did when it was brand new. Promise. Note: After the cleaning of the "TB" (IF you remove it-recommended) the computer MUST be "Re-Learned", or you will have all kind of problems. Check this out on KZfaq videos; that show HOW to do it easily. It's a procedure that must be followed to the "nth" degree. It might take several try's to get the knack of it; but when you get it right, you will be surprised how smooth your car will run. Promise. For what it's worth.

I think this is my starting point! I bought a car that was previously wrecked & rebuilt for almost nothing from a guy in the scary part of Detroit, it was not driven for probably 3 years. The engine never had as much "Pep" as i thought it should, and the gas miles were 5-10 below what i was expecting. Then it started acting real sluggish and i thought i had a brake dragging, but laser thermometer didn't see a hot rotor, then it just died. hasn't started in a week. Fuel pumps both working (Hi & Low), haven't pulled the plugs yet. I hope to see a dirty MAF or MAP! i hope the dying wasn't my converter melting into 1 big slug and plugging my exhaust!

The part you point to is actually the air temperature sensor. The mass air flow part is down at the bottom of the tube.

Good video, in particular, specifying that you should use a mass air flow cleaner (easy to get on line). While you're at it change out your air filter and clean the throttle body if needed.

Mass airflow sensor cleaner is available at Walmart and any local auto parts stores

There are two types of air flow sensors depending on the sensor element being used. These are "dumb" sensors in that they just send signal back to the engine management computer. The engine management computer interprets the signal. There is no microprocessor in the sensor. It just has highly sensitive and delicate sensor elements.

I replaced mine on my 1997 buick le sabre. The old sensor plastic neck was cricked, and the electrical wires were clearly broken. Be careful with the sensor. It is kind of cheap plastic. Not sure what happened first, but the symptoms were pretty much like he said here. Stalling, rough idle, etc. While you replace the sensor do take the time to clean out the throttle body. On an old care you might be surprised how much gunk is in there. Do NOT get the carb cleaner anywhere near the New sensor. Clean out that throttle body before you put the new sensor in. I also replaced my Idle air controller. That thing was pretty gunked up and I think was also a reason my car surged, stalled, etc. I did replace the throttle position sensor also, just because it was cheap and easy to do. That might be a bit off kilter at low idle. All three things done and my car worked fine. Later I had a bad crankshaft sensor and the car stopped running completely. That was an easy one, but i let the shop replace that sensor. I want to replace the camshaft sensor too, but that is surprisingly tough to reach. All this stuff is cheap compared to buying a new car. My car has 198,000 miles on it, and today is 2017. That little 3.8 engine is really pretty good. I also replaced the little fuel pressure regulator and I think that helped the idle also.

My car won’t even start at this point but all the other symptoms mentioned occurred prior. I thought it was a bad step motor in the begining. But I got cleaning maf cleaner and tried it out. Nothing worked so I just ordered a new pieace from Amazon. Hope this does the trick, thanks a lot!

Hi Paul! After changing the MAF sensor, you do not need to wait 50 miles for check engine light to disappear. Just remove positive terminal from battery for 30 minutes, re- connect, and engine light is gone. Lexus, actually requires disconnecting battery for up to 30 minutes after sensor(s) have been replaced.

2009 Ranger 4l ranger auto started shifting very hard from 1st to 2nd.Next day, check engine light came on p0102. Cleaned MAF sensor,no change. Never made the connection between the two problems but thought I would get the tranny fixed first. Much to my surprise, the mass air flow sensor replacement and reset fixed the transmission problem. Computers rule.

I've been told mine is bad on an 88 Sentra. The ECM/ECU fried when water got to it. The next day I tried to start it, but no go. Someone said somethin else may have fried. After replacing ECM, the car ran good for 3-4 days. Now it has a rough idle, jerking/surging when driving, runs/idles rich, a smell of gas from the tailpape, and mileage is about 7 mpg. Evidently, you can't get just the MAF, TPS separate on this car(has throttle body injection). You have to buy the whole throttle body. A tune was done 9 mos. ago. Plugs/wires/cap/rotor/02 sensor/pcv/air filter, and before this the car ran really good. Thanks

Thanks very much for the vid!! I just want to say one thing about those cheap MAFs on eBay or Amazon...I wouldn't recommend them to anyone. I bought one for $US23 to change the MAF for my car, Nissan. Of course, it came from China after waiting for about 5 weeks or so. After replacing it for few weeks, I noticed the car run worse than with the previous MAF. In fact, it died on me many times when turning or reducing speed. The RPM doesn't stay around 800/ minute when idle. I had to buy a genius German BOSH one from Amazon for about $100. It's a lot better. Please stay away from those cheap MAFs!! They're very risky and not worth wasting your time, money and perhaps life too...

Most of the time the computer will run default predetermined settings when the MAF sensor fails or the primary O2 sensor fails. But still you want to clean or replace the MAF when does start to malfunction

PDFE sensor is common sensor to fail on Fords . It comes up often with emission issues .

I listened how important this device is... But dang, 90% of the cars I have owned did not even have one...meaning this MAF sensor is just another device designed to make it so people cannot work on their own cars AND to allow automotive technitions to replace parts helter skeltor and you foot the inflated bill. We used to be called mechanics because WE found and fixed the problem and did not just remove and replace parts until the problem was resolved.

It does seem like a b******* sensor for two main reasons, one the amount of air your car sucks in is basically directly proportional to the RPMs because it's not going to suck in more or less are at a given RPM

Its actually very easy to replace on Toyotas. 2 screws and harness right on top of engine. Problem is figuring out if the MAF is bad or you have air leak somewhere downstream.

At Autozone, the reader came up with the code P2177 and the explanation: System too lean off Idle Bank 1. Is that the same as these trouble codes? It says I have to replace Mass Air Flow Sensor.

Hi Paul, Good video. I am able to do myself. Only problem the Philips screws in since 2001 on Toyota Avalon. Screws are now flat , cannot get them out to clean. Bought screw extractor no luck. Any hints? Will damage anything if I pry it open to clean & replace with new screws? thanks so much Nancy

1995 Tacoma, replaced MAF with a Auto Zone part 190.00 lasted 3 months, replaced with Napa part 289.00 lasted 6 months, took to Toyota to troubleshoot, thought it might be something causing MAF to go bad. Was told this one of the few parts that needs to be OEM, they replaced.....650.00. Now 6 years later starting to have same problem. Just cant win.Hesitation on acceleration, started slowly, now getting worse. So far no code. Idles perfect and revs perfect when not under load, but when under load, it goes bananas. I found cleaning rarely helps.

Hi Charles, I have never in my life heard of an OEM MAF costiing $650. How many miles did you put on that MAF and have you ever had a trouble code from this condition? A bad maf will WREAK HAVOC on your car. Trust me. I know. Also using KN air filters will ruin these as the oil from the filter WILL blow back onto the maf sensor and short it out. STAT AWAY FROM KN AIR FILTERS.

My car (2018 Mustang GT) was taking like 5-10 seconds to turn on, and it’s got jerky acceleration, and it feels like The engine hesitates or drags while accelerating. But now it’s perfectly fine and I didn’t do anything to it. Think this may be the problem?

I drive an 09 camry that won't start at the moment. It will crank, but not start. It ran rich and stalled a few times after start-up a few days before it no longer started. It did not trigger any codes. No CEL light, so I thought it was fuel-related. Replaced fuel pump, regulator, filter - still no start. Replaced plugs - still no start. Haven't changed MAF, but I've routinely cleaned it, despite it having 200k miles... For the no-start to be MAF related, should I have seen the CEL come on? Can the engine be 'started' with the MAF unplugged to test? Any help is welcomed, thank you!

My vehicle will not start if the MAF is unplugged. I'm not saying it will fix it for sure, but In my opinion a MAF with 200K miles needs to be replaced.

Had some stalling, etc... Saw some recall work needing done so I took my car to dealer to get the warranty work done on extended Electric Throttle Body warranty first (Known issue on this year of vehicle), thinking that was my main issue and a lot of other shops won't touch a car until recall and warranty work is done. Well, they said the MAF code was triggered. Get this... $600 total for parts & (2) hours labor to replace! I was like... WHAAAAAAAAAAAAT? I said "Isn't that MAF right there as they replace the ETB? Why would it take 2 hours to swap out. Also, that part is only like $80 to $90. I was really disappointed to know this is how they treat people at the dealer. What a fucking shame!! I can swap that part out myself for $80. Just incredible. Guess they thought I was some random "Gumby" ready to say yes to whatever they wanted to do. I don't think so!

@@JDMHaze Prob. they didnt due due diligence. The tech just did a lazy quick diagnostic scan tool test. Probably cause it was an older PU. Told me if that was the case the tech is not experience mechanic. When you got a dead cylinder on a 2003 its not goin to be a spark plug or change to fix it. I also had a same situation later , had it tested somewhere else and the guy gave me a big hoopla about scan tool equipment (necessary yes) i pulled the plug. it ended up being a bad connection coil pack wiring on top of plug.

@@JDMHaze yeah finding an honest tech is not easy. I had a so called 35yr certified. (Gary's 53rd peoria) crack my block i had to buy whole new engine. He even let me drive off know ing antifreeze was runing out the cylinder filling my exust system.

Alex Rodriguez hi Alex, your vehicle more than likely has a mass airflow sensor. This sensor is a very common cause of engine hesitation. I would first clean it properly if this has not been done.

Take it to an auto parts store and they will check the vehicle with a diagnostic scanner for free which will give a trouble code to help locate the problem. If a trouble code is displayed relating to the mass air flow sensor then first properly clean the mass air flow sensor. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/j9STnsR0qLCpdZ8.html If the check engine light continues to come on then replace the mass air flow sensor.

I have a 1998 gmc c1500 ive replaced the fuel pump, spider inj with regulator , and i am still getting a hard starting i have to literally slave out the starter before itll start it seems to do it only when it sets for about 15 to 20 min and that really isnt to bad its really bad in the mornings when it hasnt been started in awhile amy ideas cause im going crazy also there is no check engine light on and seems slugish driving down the road like a big just of wind is slowing it down also has a slight hesitation when taking off and ideas please ?

Recently I had a mass airflow sensor engine light , Midas charged me $200 (they said this was a discount price) for the part plus labor, after it was replaced the engine light was still on. I went to another auto shop and they recommended the throttle body so I had them change that out and now the engine light is off. Is it possible that it was the throttle body of the whole time? The car is 10 years old and has just over 180k miles.

P0101, mass or volume air flow a circuit range, p2187 system too lean at idle Bank. Also had my AC fixed at Midas because it is warranty through them and the engine light is back on with the same lean at idle Bank error and also one for the solenoid but that's to be expected because having issues with the 3rd gear ratio and they need to warranty out the transmission. the guy that ran the Midas shop actually asked me he was wondering why I had work done at another shop I don't think they yet realize that I'm about to stop taking my car to that Midas unless something is under warranty

This is one component to NEVER EVER buy anything but genuine OEM! I also have a 2006 Camry with 2.4L 2AZ-FE. Bought a Walker. Big mistake. It was calibrated fine above ~100 CFM but any flow rate lower it was WAY off. I know this by using Torque and monitoring fuel trim while running. Another smoking gun was the MAF sensor read 2.8 CFM with the key on but the motor not running. Yeah, I don't think so.

i have a mazda 3 and had MAF sensor issues. now the connector has a broken wire and somehow that part is hard to find. the dealer doesn't even have it and mechanic is still hunting one down. 2007 Mazda 3 and a little MAF wiring harness is hard to find?!??!?!!?

I'm sure you could find one at a salvage yard. These salvage yards can really come in handy. Not long ago I had to replace a cracked air filter housing that Toyota wanted $850 dollars for. I ended up finding a used one on line in excellent condition at a salvage yard which I had shipped to me for $100 dollars.

Clean your MAF,PCV and throttle body in one go whilst under the hood/bonnet folks so you know it's done for another 3/4 yrs.Hasstle free and head ache free driving.

You beat me to the comment. I recently replaced my throttle position sensor. Of course, I cleaned out the throttle body (with throttle cleaner), the MAF (with MAF cleaner), and swapped the air filter. PCV was given a tidying up. I think a lot of people know about air filters but the entire airflow system is easily maintained and can make a big difference in performance.

I have a 2011 Hyundai sonata. Can a bad MAF sensor also affect engine temperature & also when the engine fan turns on and off? The issue started at about 100,000 miles. I now have about 145,000 miles on it. I have a P0128 code and my engine fan runs randomly, usually constantly, and my car won't get up to running temp. When I idle for a bit, the engine will overheat. I have replaced the thermostat (twice), the engine fan sensor, the Air Temp sensor & the MAP sensor and I still have the same issue. Can anyone help me? The only other things I can think of is the MAF sensor, the O2 sensors or it's a bad ECU. Any suggestions??
