I know everybody loves Heath Ledger as the Joker but can we also take a moment and appreciate Hans Zimmer? I mean seriously his music makes every scene 10 times more intense and suits the movie and the Joker perfectly.

Just one more reason why Ledger was the best. I like the implication that this Joker wasn't MADE but instead simply CHOSE what he is. Great interpretation.

The most popular theory about the origin of Nolan's joker is that he was a PTSD suffering special forces soldier. He, certainly, has the skills.

Good video, but I think we have to stop calling The Joker an anarchist. Anarchism is a political and social ideology about a utopian world without rulers and institutions, this has nothing to do with Joker's worldview. There is a difference between anarchy and chaos. The best way to describe Joker's philosophy is with Nietzsche's aphorism: "Whoever fights monsters should see to it that in the process he does not become a monster. And if you gaze long enough into an abyss, the abyss will gaze back into you."

Nolan's Joker is so proud of his scars he uses make up to emphasize them.

The dark knight is my favorite movie of all time

This was great! I really love how there are tantalizing clues scattered in The Joker's personality, behavior and dialogue throughout the film regarding his origins, but most of what he says may be lies, anyway. From what can be conjectured, though, it’s clear that he's had military training, and has a serious disdain for the government and its monopoly on social order. When it comes to the backstories about the scars, the way I see it, they served to manipulate those he told them to; another sign of his incredible intellect. What a layered character. Nolan and Heath did wonderful work.

There's a theory that he was a war veteran.

The different stories wasn’t Nolan’s idea. The reason the stories are different is because the joker himself doesn’t actually know. The joker in literally insane. When he tells a story he really does believe that that story is the real origin. Every time he tells the story it will change bc he can’t tell the difference between his imagination and his memories. It’s all the same to him. The truth is his origin was lost when he lost his mind.

This video is so good that I'm going to see it again.

You forgot Patton Oswalt's theory on how the joker might be a veteran and his antiestablishment stance might be a consequence of America's absurde foreign policy, along with PTSD and being injured, hence the scars. Remember what he says to Dent: "If a bunch of soldiers die, that's not a problem because it's all according to plan". Alani's slow speech at the end is as freeky as the Joker, nice job and great video as usual, girls!!!

I love this iteration of the Joker because he's so elusive and manipulative and one giant contradiction. Rewatching the scene where he walks in on the mob meeting, I noticed how at the end he just runs after getting out the doors; he was actually scared shitless. And he goes on a tirade about chaos and the hypocrisy of people trying to control everything to Dent, and about how he's a man with no plan. When in actuality the Joker is doing the same thing for his sick games, and his plans are some of the most intricate in film ever. At the end when the boats don't destroy each other you can see the disappointment and even anger in his eyes, since he's such a control freak. Also when he takes the officer prisoner with a piece of glass, you can hear the desperation in his voice to get his phone call, since he knows the plan has to be put in motion NOW. Even after all that you never really know if his end game was just chaos or to shape the city and make people behave the way HE saw fit.

Great video! Though I have to say, with all the historical references you made and given that Heath's is the only Joker to have a Glasgow smile, I'm surprised you didn't draw parallels between him and the character who inspired the Joker's creation in the first place: Gwynplaine, the title character in "The Man Who Laughs" by Victor Hugo. Gwynplaine was scarred with a Glasgow smile in childhood as a punishment to his father, a nobleman who supported the English Republic even after the monarchy had been restored in 1660. Gwynplaine grows up knowing nothing of his aristocratic background and instead earns his living as a clown, working alongside Dea, a blind girl he falls in love with. Like the Joker, Gwynplaine flaunts his scars during his performances to show audiences that he gets the joke first. Yet while the Joker uses the showing off of his scars to express anarchy, fear, and unrestrained chaos, Gwynplaine displays his Glasgow smile as a sign of forgiveness. He doesn't let his tragedy embitter him and he doesn't blame the common people who attend the play for it. Instead, he takes up the clown's classic role of being a voice for the people.

oh my god I've been so excited for a health ledger joker video from you guys! thank you for this. do ya'll think you could do a video about Jerome Valeska's character in Gotham? one time I saw someone point out in a scene where he resembled Jack, Heath, and Mark through his voice or mannerisms and ultimately became the fans wishes to be the Joker. (but I think the show aren't allowed to use the Joker name for copyright purposes?) and I think Cameron also did a real great job in playing his 2 chatacters bc of how they're basically two sides of the same coin. he even locked himself in his apartment/hotel room to prepare for his role as Jerome.

I agree that he probably did that on his own. Perhaps to avoid being recognized or profiled by authorities, so he could reinvent himself however he pleased? I also agree that he was never broken or abused, he is made this way

One thing that has to admired about The Dark Knight is how much it demonstrates how vigilantism play out in the real world, not to mention how realistic the conflict and themes in the film are.

My theory is that the joker was a soldier and his scars are just from soldier injuries and he could have died a hero as a soldier but somehow he lived long enough to become the villain and he became crazy because of PTSD and emotional shock of his teammates dying.

I feel the Joker has had some sort of training via military or maybe he was apart of the mafia or gang in another part of the country, probably Chicago listening to his accent. Could of been an undercover cop who went in too deep and became distrusting and disillusioned of the society he was trying to protect. Either way he has to have some sort of training, formal or informal.

I've always loved Heath Ledger's performance as the Joker just for the physical interpretation be gave, but now I see that the true Joker influence comes from how fantastically well he was written. Such a psychologically twisted character that can only be unveiled through analysis on a deeper level than only gestures and voice.

Both of them are real because I think that he was abused by his drunk father as he says he hated his father and I think he gave himself the scars because of his wife's wounds because of how emotional he sounded when he talked about her

Awesome video! I like to think of his statement of how he got the scars is a contrast of where ever he is attacking powerful people in their clean pristine element. The mob boss in his suit at his hide out very nice pool room. The elite of Gotham at a fundraiser everyone done up and in a fancy venue. He compels them to look at his grotesque unpleasant scars in their clean controlled world. He wants to teach both sides of power, the ones who do good and the ones who do bad. He teaches them in a way they may understand how twisted he thinks society really is, the powerful, ones who think they are in a position to use brute force(mob boss) or be a supportive role in a relationship(police and commissioner). He is saying to the mob boss that he is taking power away from feinds with his chaos, and he is also saying to the good that his is only trying to help them in his own twisted way.
