I dont like it when either DC or Marvel does that for the entire world to know. But thankfully Bendis is done with Superman, of course thats not to say other sjw writers haven't botched super like in truth and justice but I digress...thankfully some others still write him well and we always have older stories to fall back on too.

Yeah the mystery is part of the Jokers appeal..without a real backstory it makes him seem more dangerous, more unexpected and kind of more inhuman... especially in this kind of movie..like the boogeyman or something

I've always had this idea that they're BOTH true. The dad story happened first, and then the wife story happened, which is why his scars look so infected -- because he reopened them for his wife.

Nolan wanted this Joker to be less 'human' and more of an entity. An elemental force of anarchy with no discernable rhyme or reason. Knowing nothing of his backstory makes him all the more terrifying because you don't understand how or why he works. It's one of main themes of the story, that sometimes there is no dramatic 'origin' or logical explanation behind great evil (Alfred's watch the world burn monologue). I don't believe any of his stories are real. They may have small hints of reality in them, or they could be complete fabrications. To me, it is more of an indication of how brilliant his mind is - that although he is a complete psychopath void of empathy, he can still make up these human stories that seem real, and can elicit both terror and sympathy. His understanding of the human psyche is what makes him so dangerously manipulative. I see his telling of the scar stories like a shark playing with it's food. It's done purely to mess with the victim. That is what makes this interpretation of the Joker so much more threatening and intimidating; he understands everything about you, but you understand almost nothing about him.

The reason for Jokers inconsistent stories is that the Joker in "The Killing Joke"states that he remembers his backstory differently each time. Theres no concrete backstory for the Joker, whether he was a criminal before he took his dunk in the chemical bath, an innocent man forced into crime or whatever else(which is why I think Joaquin Phoenix's "Joker"is such a mischaracterization of the Clown Prince of Crime, by giving him a specific backstory.) "The Dark Knight"is the perfect ending to the series. Rises isn't nearly as good.

To your point about Harvey falling to evil, I was in the same boat as you. That said, one of Joker's ever present themes in all media is this quote from the comics, “All it takes is one bad day to reduce the sanest man alive to lunacy. That's how far the world is from where I am. Just one bad day.” His point is that the world is really not all that different from him, hence the only time he looks out of sorts in the movie is when the people on the boat don't kill each other, proving him wrong. Still, he did get Harvey Dent in the end.

The switch from Katie Holmes to Maggie was actually because of her psychopathic ex-husband, tom Cruise. After they got married in Scientology, he forbade her from doing movies anymore. She was a prisoner for years until she left him, and didn't make a movie until after she left him.

A memory I have from a bad digital pirate copy of this movie. My mother who was dying of cancer said is his makeup bad and I said yes it is supposed to add to the realism. She said I don't like it and fell asleep halfway through the flick. My Mother was a real traditionalist, loved things that were the same. I wish she could have broken through to this generation, she would have made some major impacts. She was artsy, smart, and sweet just like you.

Fun fact: The scene where Joker blows up a hospital is improvised. They could only do one take, and the original plan was for it to blow up and just have him walk away (cue 'Cool Guys Don't Look at Explosions'), but the explosives didn't trigger on time, so Heath Ledger just did that move with his prop and stayed in character.

Fun fact: the hospital they blew up was the old offices for Brach's Candy. I know I am in the minority here. Most not all of my friends disagree with me. But I never loved heath ledger as a joker and in turn always felt like this movie is overrated. I could easily find 8 marvel movies I enjoyed more then add in the new Joker movie and Logan and you have 10 comic book movies I enjoyed more. It's definitely top 20 though and maybe even top 15. Of course this is an opinion that is in the minority and I'm well aware. I think the hurdle I struggled with was comparing it to a lifetime of the animated joker done by mark hamill. It was so different than that it left me leaving the theater slightly disappointed.
