Cleopatra - the most famous woman in history. We know her as a great queen, a beautiful lover and a political schemer. For 2,000 years almost all evidence of her has disappeared - until now.
In one of the world's most exciting finds, archaeologists believe they have discovered the skeleton of her sister, murdered by Cleopatra and Mark Antony.
From Egypt to Turkey, Neil Oliver investigates the story of a ruthless queen who would kill her own siblings for power. This is the portrait of a killer.
From Elizabeth II to Cleopatra, Real Royalty peels back the curtain to give a glimpse into the lives of some of the most influential families in the world, with new full length documentaries posted every week covering the monarchies of today and all throughout history.

Cleopatra was no different to her male counterparts in the pursuit of power. Historically not uncommon you just have to study the ottoman empire, to see what was necessary to ensure one's own succession to a throne. Ruthless yes killer no! Otherwise every great legend would be labeled as such.
@Justme-xo5nl
@Justme-xo5nl 3 жыл бұрын
This is sexism. You can see it with many women who were in power. Of course, they were ruthless and cruel and I don't want to downplay this BUT their male counterparts were just the same. They also killed many, killed family members etc. to ensure their power. The only female emperor of China Wu Zetian is the same. Has a reputation of being ruthless while ignoring that many of China's emperors were just like that. Just because it is a woman it gets way more emphasized

It was called " Job Security " back then ! Tigers eat their young ? Don't wait for daddy tiger to pick up your brother ! Drag his sorry ass over to that big snake ? Waiting for your brother to be thrown off the cliff by the Spartan Priest ? Screw that , bash his head in with a rock and blame it on a Helot ! The fact she did this at 13 years old and knew what tools she would need , in her world as a women , to grab and maintain power , is a testament to those who taught her . Nine different tongues she spoke , but knew how to use her tongue , for her advantage , in a way Vercingetorix could or would not ! She would fit in with the Female English Throne Club ? If they were not cutting heads off , they were burying children in the walls of the Tower ! Way back , Thailand had a real zinger for while , she killed everyone !

She knew eight languages and needed no interpreter to interact with people from all over the Mediterranean. She was the first of her line to learn the Egyptian language which brought her the acceptance of the people. She was an intellectual, a scientist, a warrior, and the last Pharaoh after 3,000 years of rule! Never to be seen again. So interesting and so amazing. She was indeed no different from the male counterparts! They think they found her tomb though! Exciting times!

Her sister was out to kill her to take over her Throne that their father had left Cleopatra. She was a back stabbing traitor to Cleopatra. It wasn't a question of family it was a question of two people going for the same throne, it was a war that Cleopatra won. Her sister would have killed her to sit on the throne. To say Cleo was beautiful despite all images being more plain and we know her to have been on the heavier side also shows you this story is not well researched except by Hollywood standards...how sad to try so hard to make Cleopatra a killer when she was just a ruler who cared for the people of Egypt .

Look pretty much any monarch, especially at that time could be labeled as a killer. And, to be fair, Cleopatra's sister actually attempted to steal the thrones from her. What was she supposed to do? Just let her go? If she did, Asinoe would have tried again. Rulers had to eliminate threats to their throne. It doesn't make it right, but back then ruling meant it was kill or be killed.

It's funny how most would describe Cleopatra as beautiful, but one account had described her as plain and ordinary looking, nothing spectacular about her (but it was one of Marc Antony's men who gave that account, so maybe he just hated her lol) But what I got from this was just a bunch of sibling rivalry, and it paints a portrait of how incredibly coldblooded Cleopatra was, though whether it was a hard decision for her to make or not, none of us will never know. And perhaps what's even more scary was that Cleopatra was a mother, I shudder to think what she would do if any of her children clashed with her. Ironically by killing her siblings, and deciding to fight against Rome, Cleopatra effectively reassured that her whole line was wiped out.

There are Roman carvings of her, and it was not her looks, she was plain, but used her youth as ceasar was 50s she was so young, and she had a personality and manipulative so that's where the attraction came from. The name "Cleopatra" goes back to ancient Macedonia and means "glory of the father" and an equivalent name would be "Patroclus" who in the "Iliad" of Homer is Achilles's boyfriend."Kleopatros" would be the male equivalent of "Cleopatra." The well known Cleopatra probably had zero Egyptian blood in her veins though she seems to have made an effort to learn the language and to follow traditional Egyptian culture.
@marielaveau6362
@marielaveau6362 3 жыл бұрын
How would you or anyone know if she had any Egyptian blood or not? There's no written record of her ancestry found as of today. And records about her life were written hundreds of years after her death. So to say in a definitive manner that she had zero Egyptian blood is your opinion, not a fact. As long as her family was in Egypt there is more of a chance that she did have some mixture of ancestry, than there is that she didn't.

My 6 years younger sister, who looks just like me, also pursued a close friend (Kind of a boyfriend, we dated off and on in high school and college) we had been sort of an item for over 10 years. I moved to germany for a few years, in that time my sister looked him up. Hung out with him and his rommates (high school buddies) at his house. One night, shortly after arriving, she disappeared. He found her, in his bed, naked. What happened after that I'll never know for sure. He told me nothing.... but, who knows. My sister called me the next day (she didn't know my friend had told me what she did) and said "wouldn't it be funny if he was your brother-in-law one of these days?" ....what a @#$% We are no longer in contact. Not because of him - but because everything is a competition to her with me. She can't just be a sister or a friend.

Since so many in the comments are complaining what Egyptians look like in the past just look at todays Egyptians, they resemble and are the decedent of Ancient Egyptians, for example China has been conquered by the Mongols, Japanese, British. Greece has been conquered by the Persians, Romans, Ottomans. Native Americans like Apaches, Cherokees, an other tribes have been conquered by the Spanish, French, British, but todays Chinese, Greeks, Native Americans still are descendents an resemble thier ancestors in the past, Egypt is just one of many countries that has been conquered an mixed races in the past but todays Egyptians still resemble an are descendents of Ancient Egyptians, an all the countries I just said eventually won their independence.

@William Cotton Like I said you don't have a opened mind, you do realize when I said resemble it doesn't mean literal, I guess I gotta tell you the definition of resemble cause you don't know (have qualities or features, especially those of appearance, in common, or seem like) you do also realize in Egypt they still speak the Ancient Coptic language that there ancestors spoke, although Egyptian culture today is predominantly Arab and Arabic launguage is spoken in Egypt also, genetics as well as cultural identity show that modern Egyptians are descendents of Ancient Egyptians, that's a few reasons why I said resemble, an of course every country has mixed races with others, but they still resemble either a lot or a little with there ancestors, I guess to people that aren't so judgmental like you would understand, an you wanna talk about Brazil ok I could do that, in Brazil there is over 300 Native tribes that still live the Amazon like the Tikuna tribe for example that still live there native ways an speak there indigenous language like there Ancestors, tribes in just Brazil cover 690 territories, they resemble there ancestors, also in South Africa there's still the Bantu Natives that still live there an speak their native language an they resemble their ancestors, also in Australia there's the Native Aboriginals that still live in Australia, they still speak their native language an resemble there ancestors, you should read more an stop pointing the finger so much maybe you could learn to be more opened minded.

To act as if Cleopatra completely manipulated Cesar and her siblings being murdered while battling for control was unusually cruel is all wrong. She had no power when she went to Cesar. He was in his 50’s, already married, already fought and conquered many places, he was educated, world travelled, and experienced. She was educated but she was young and doing what she thought was right and what she felt she had to do to survive. Rome wanted Egypt. And he wanted another beautiful young woman. Siblings killing siblings, children killing parents, adults killing children to gain power had been going on for THOUSANDS of years before Cleopatra and continued for a millennium plus several centuries after her

@@neshtosi2116 she didn’t but okay, she was Persian and Greek ( there’s been debates that she could be black but no hard evidence so hard and it seems more likely her ancestry is the other ones mentioned bc she ruled in the time of the Ptolemy dynasty, during this time Greeks imperials ruled if the region) but had to play the part of being an Egyptian goddess on earth, so how she portrayed herself self was Egyptian (and being a goddess) but yah she wasn’t white

Scottish is too distinct a regional accent for a documentary for the broader market, especially when the subject is Egypt and the reenactment actors are using RP English. If the foremost Egyptologist is Scottish, you need to tell us, that'll make sense, but in voiceover the accent is too non-standard to be easily understood. It becomes a character in the story, one that doesn't quite fit.
