I'm so excited you guys went here. Everyone kept telling me this side of the country was dangerous which I felt was highkey racist, because why are the black parts of countries always considered "dangerous." Adding Limon to my Costa Rican travel bucket list!

I loved Costa Rica and especially the Limón area. Puerto Viejo, Cahuita, Manzanillo...all of it! The food, 😋. Great experiences! Easy interactions with friendly local people, local bus rides to various towns, howler monkeys, black sand beach. It was more than a year between visits and as I walked along the beach in Manzanillo, a guy called out and waived, ran over, said he remembered me from the prior year and the rain forest tourist and welcomed me back. It warmed my heart. 💜

Great video! I stayed in Cahuita back in 2015 and loved it - howler monkeys, black sand beach, lively dancing and socializing at bars/restaurants, kind and friendly local citizens, delicious food, and walking distance to Parque Nacional Cahuita. I highly recommend a visit to the Caribbean side of Costa Rica. (And as a single female traveler, I found it to be safe)

The segregation was not primarily due to color but to cultural differences like language and religion, the workers came under contract to work on the port and City construction and the lowlands section of the railroad, they were not tricked by the government but the ufco. Black presence in Costa Rica is centuries old as well as the cultural missunderstanding but taking about segregation is exagerated with todays lens. Its easier to find out how italians and cubans and later lebanese blended. Afrocaribean being more saw no interest in blend and were able to maintain churches and English schools for decades and in part that also explain why they mostly stay living in limón Province. Its fair to say the efforts from government to adapt and integrate the black community and limón are also decades old and the black leaders and organization were more succesful than others to do it

I've been to Limon several times and have a real connection to it. It really is more dangerous than the rest of Costa Rica. That being said, the culture and food there really are the best. As a Jamaican myself I was fascinated by how my people migrated there and brought the Jamaican flavor and added the Spanish mix there.
@TheYarbros
@TheYarbros 2 жыл бұрын
Yes to all of that. They....brought w/ them seeds for planting and their own way of life. Absolutely fascinating and by the government cutting them off their culture took root. It is more dangerous that's the other side of having to fend for yourself... People do what they believe they have to do.

@@TheYarbros crime often comes with lack of resources. Plus as you can imagine, that port is an attractive place for a certain kind of product smuggling. But not all areas are hot spots. BTW, while the history of limon is bad as it pertains to the govt, the country has come to celebrate and embrace black culture. Going to clubs in San Jose or anywhere in CR, they love the music and mix with the black people. I went to school in San Jose and worried the police would watch me but i passed them everyday and they never noticed the one black guy walking by. There was even a famous homeless black man who slept outside of the school downtown and people were so kind to him. Costa Rica every year celebrates día de los negros with pride. It's definitely not what I'm accustomed to in the states

I was born and raised in Harlem NYC but I was also raised in Limon as a baby and all threw my life my Grand ma had a house in Santa Edujes and it is paradise too me . My FAVORITE AREA BY FAR (after 16 years living in CR)!! The Caribbean food with lots of coconut in it but also many international restaurants, the people, the Jamaican/black culture & MORE!!!! (just don't bring your computer with you & do be conscious)

I've been to Costa Rica in San Jose with a few friends from this church. It was awesome. I wish i could have gone to Puerto Limon because i know what that area is known for. Considering the fact that I'm of Caribbean origin. Many black Costa Ricans are of West Indian descent . Just like many black Panamanians are also of West Indian background. We black people are all over. People just don't know.

I'm a single woman, black & American. Well...only until l have someone l can trust 100% to travel "with" me I'm staying put. Its stressful (in my own country) coming across so many shady characters & disingenuous people...scamners etc. I can only imagine what I'd come across stepping into in a whole new country & culture w/ no allies & no one l know. Thats not good to have to be in such a vulnerable position where if something happened you may never be found. And it happens so ladies DON'T TRAVEL ALONE. You become a big target.

The first time I went to Costa Rica, I was also told not to go to Limon. But, I really wanted to go and I knew the Carib side was afro Latino, so I figured this is why I was being told not to go. Well, I arrived in Manzanillo, a small town past Puerto Viejo and 3 days later I was robbed of all of my belongings. LOL. Win some you lose some.

Jamaicans, Barbadians, Trinidanians, Grenadians, etc came to Costa Rica to work in the banana plantations and to build the Railroads to the Atlantic Ocean through thick jungles of Central America. Unlike the locals or the Chinese, they knew the British Imperial System (of measures, miles, feet, inches, etc) used to the build these Railroads and the Panama Canal. Jamaicans brought with them their own schools and education system to Costa Rica, Panama, and other places. Mathematics (Arithmetic) were taught from an early age in school and normally on Sundays after church service. Unfortunately, those the Jamaican schools were closed down by the Central American governments.

How much do you guys charge to assist with an itinerary to places like Costa Rica, Panama, and Mexico. How can we contact you? Or are you guys still to busy with your own itineraries. 😊 I will be traveling with a child so I would love assistance from trustworthy sorces.
