Finding out my favourite Oasis song of all time was in fact stolen, is like finding out my son is not mine after 20 years.

I prefer the Oasis versions of every song they're accused of ripping off. Not sure if it's Liams voice or Noels arrangements.

They lost a lot of their punky sound when Tony was sacked. I preferred him on drums. I’ve read his book and it’s great. He didn’t trash Noel or anything like that. Which he could quite easily have done. Shows what a good bloke he is. The truth is a very good and apt title for his book as well.

Judging by stories like "Rolexes to the band, Rolls-Royce to Noel" it really feels like McGee has convinced Noel that he is Oasis by himself, even though they already had the sound - which they've lost when the original members left. Liam's contribution is also utterly underrated. Noel has created this image that he's a genius songwriter, but without his brother's delivery I don't think any of his songs would have been noticed. In the meantime whatever Liam sings, the tune sounds like Oasis, whether it's written by Death in Vegas or even Bob Marley. I'm also certain that Liam could have become a great songwriter with some encouragement in the early 90s and the band could have become a relatively successful indie band. On the other hand, I don't see Noel's career ever taking off without the sound, attitude and voice of Oasis.

Man, I always felt that Columbia was a total different kettle of fish from the other songs on Def-Maybe and now I know why. Especially listening to the Real People. Its totally their 1991 album vibe.

I saw The Real People in 1992 and when I heard Oasis I was shocked at how much they sounded like The Realies!!

I had the chord book and always wondered who Chris was. What a blast from the past. The Oasis B-Side ‘Going Nowhere’ Has some of the same vibe of The Real People’s song of the same name. Great video by the way.

Great video man. The first time I heard Don’t Go Away and The real people’s song that is identical, i was mind blown. Also I never knew that Liam made the chorus for Columbia, it would’ve been cool to hear what Liam could’ve made had Noel given him a chance to do it early on.

Fascinating.. Like others I’m a huge fan and wasn’t aware of this… great job again. Despite Noel being my all time hero, I’ve always been aware he has a dark side and he’s had his moments like this.. (Also always hated the unnecessary verbal put down against an unwell Michael Hutchence at 96 Brits)

Another great video.. a good friend of mine convinced me to go see the real people with him a couple of years ago, he said it’s where oasis started and you’ll know what I mean when you get there, I was gob smacked how many parts of their songs featured on oasis albums, even if not directly stolen but sounded so alike, mainly from definitely maybe.

I know that this information is out there already, but I think you’ve done a great job researching this. Well done! The truth will out.

im so glad to hear people are talking about this again, I've been good mates with Tony and Chris for many many years, was a member of the band for a few years and spent a good few years in there studio with them helping them record a great many records with so many different artists and all that time "that cheque was on the wall the whole time". they are without a doubt the most prolific and melodically wonderful songwriters, ive heard those Reels many many times its so overwhelmingly obvious, and to be fair when the first oasis record came we all knew those songs were Realies songs its so obvious, made ever harder when knowing all the parties involved . it certainly was a shitty thing to do. Noel always seems to be a fair and although highly disagreeable he's usually jovial and fun to be around most of the time but damn would I love to see his face if Tony and Chris walked in the room, I think they are owed a sit down and a hatchet burying as one thing I know about the Griffiths brothers is they are Honest to a fault and no matter how hard they try they can't hold a grudge they are far to big hearted for that. Lets hope one day it happens

Never heard of The Real People and just started listening to them -- wow! Real shame these guys never broke in the same way as Oasis. Even a band like James broke bigger than these guys.

A brilliant video, James and a maybe a bit of restorative justice too. I really liked the bit at the end where you acknowledge that we’re all a mix of qualities and no one’s conscience is quite clear. Two things struck me, thinking it over. One was the remark you quoted near the beginning about perceived differences between Liverpool and Manchester band cultures. It’s definitely the case I think that particular places, cities say, foreground certain values at the expense of others. Some places will feel to a majority of people kinder, or more dangerous, or more fun-loving or creative than others. This has a strong bearing on how we all learn to present ourselves. On top of that there are institutions and times. It might be very important to be ‘hard’ in a cell block, but not in a refuge for victims of domestic violence. And the lad culture of the 90s has now in many peoples’ minds started to go the way of flared jeans and flat caps. So in some cultures it might be easier than in others to get away with being a bit ruthless. The second thing is hinted at in your mentions of Alan McGee and that’s career strategy. People who want fame need to make a strong impact and for that you need a very well-defined and simple image. I wonder if at some point early on Noel might have been advised to simplify the story you tell here. Of course now that Oasis is probably over and has achieved global fame, it’s possible to let some of the complexities back in. Led Zeppelin didn’t initially give credit to Willie Dixon, but later they did. Still, it’s a fascinating topic and you open it all up with you usual depth and flair. Thank you.

Excellent video, James and really interesting as I wasn't aware of this story myself. In a way it doesn't surprise me that Noel would have done this as he always did have that dark side to his personality and maybe it was ego and greed that took over. One thing that stands out to me funnily enough about Rockin chair is the chorus sounds quite similar to the pre-chorus of Tiffany's "I think we're alone now" the "running as fast as we can" bit in that song. So perhaps he should credit Tiffany too for that one lol. Great video anyway, James as I always enjoy your Oasis analysis back story ones.

To be honest I think that Noel always had this hunger of becoming a rockstar no matter what, and without that oasis would've never reached that level of fame and success. I think he was an incredible strategist. He knew that it was not going to be easy, but he also knew how to play his cards and did it great (althought that consisted on wearing masks and blend in with all kind of people , use'em and get away with it). I think that somehow , all that he did was necesary and perfect , and if you think it wasn't , Oasis music is the result of that and it speaks for itself

Great video! i think part of is it to do with the wider issue of selling the oasis myths that was so important in their early success. The myth that the band were plodding along and then noel walked in with a bunch of songs and took over the band was massive at the time. that would have been undermined by a shared songwriting credit. maybe noel had to wrestle with the truth and the creation of the legend there are many other myths involved in the creation of the band that were sold to the press and helped fuel their rise.

Noel admitted he steals riffs and segments of other people’s music in his songs it isn’t a secret. But Columbia and the real people is kinda shady. And the whole band bullied tony I felt really bad for him.

Great video James. Yeah the Real people were shafted by Noel I don't why he did it when they helped so much in the early days. On a plus side though I bet a load of Oasis fans when hearing these stories go check out the Real people back catalogue and might become fans of theirs and go and see them live. Also Tony's book is excellent I got it when it first came out and I did think at first some of the Noel bullying stories where a bit exaggerated but over the years I've changed my mind. Does anyone have a link for the song that sounds like rocking chair.

Great video James! I think it was a mix of all of the reasons that you gave is why Noel decided to do what he did to the Real People. By the way, If you haven't already you should listen to the story of Big Un and Oasis, I don't agree with most of what he tries to display but it's a good read aswell I believe Tony shared some of it in his book.

Noal is a great tallent but there's a reason I'm not into his High Flying Birds stuff but was a huge fan of OASIS. It may well be Noel who drives the genisis of these songs and gives these songs their colour and depth, but, clearly it takes a band to make them, and the sublte nuonces are as important as any other part of any song. Maybe copyright law should be changed to reflect this.

Discovered and loved The Real People and Rain in my mid to late teens, about 1991. Proper rootsy bands. When I heard Supersonic for the first time on the ITV chart show I thought, that's brilliant, sounds like The Real People. It does resemble the magnificent Car Outside you gotta admit. I do wonder how much of Marshmellow Lane Noel had heard in the run up to Definitely Maybe. There's such a similar sound to The Realies throughout that first album

It's really weird this situation because although all this was going on at the time, especially 1997 with Don't Go Away, Noel, ocean colour scene and the two Griffiths brother played day tripper together on a night of OCS's tour. You can notice that the Griffiths and noel don't really look at each other during the song, but I can't understand why they would play together considering what was going on.

Saw the Real People in 2002 in the bizarrest setting, opening up for Simple Minds (my guilty pleasure) at the NEC, which was about a quarter full when they were on. They were a good live band.

Most people 45+ in Liverpool who are into music know that the Realie's & Smaller were the influence behind Oasis as well as the Roses & The Beatles and all that, it's nice to see that other people out there can now get to hear the 'truth' behind the rock n roll myths if you know what I mean? Brilliant channel & reporting James by the way

My opinion is Oasis were originally Liam's band formed with his mates. Noel was asked to come down and audition with them and play some songs that he'd written over the years. However there is a good 5 years between Liam and Noel in age and whilst Liam wanted to be a rock star Noel had already lived that life to an extend from his days working with The Inspiral Carpets. Noel didn't have the same feelings of goodwill towards Liam's mates the other members because there weren't his mates they were Liam's. To Noel they were just hired hands and ultimately Noel is quite a shrewd character. Ultimately Oasis were a vehicle to showcase his song writing skills and a way to try and get rich and his ruthlessness and occasional wickedness showed he didn't care who got in the way. An increasing ego and drug consumption probably didn't help and drugs and alcohol can often bring out the worse out in people. I'm not trying to suggest Noel is all bad mind.

Completely fits Noel's character. If he can absolutely thrive on cutting his own brother out of his life and not have even an ounce of remorse about it, it would be incredibly easy for him to fuck over a bunch of guys he met and worked with for a time. Noel is only about Noel. Everything else is expendable.

Once had an Oasis picture book when I was a kid in the 90's; one quote from NG that sticks out was - "You pick up your guitar, rip a few people's tunes off, swap them round a bit, get your brother in the band, punch his head in every now and then and it sells." There you go...

I used to have the Encyclopedia of British Hit Singles ( Mike Read Johnathan King & more DJs on the cover ) printed before Britpop. There was an existing act called Oasis - a light entertainment group a bit Swingle 2 if I’m not mistaken. Had the brothers gained their approval before using the name I wonder ? Inspiral Carpets were sometimes produced by the amazing Dave Fielding but no doubt you’re aware of such stuff because your work is wonderful or educational. Thankyou 😁👍

Another outstanding video James. I had just graduated when Oasis came out, so while I really liked them, I had stopped reading NME and simply didn't know about this story. There is simply nothing worse at times than being a creative person who either gets plaigiarised or not formally acknowledged.

James, if you go on the Real People's Wikipedia page, you see that Anthony Griffith's is credited for providing backing vocals on supersonic. Is this the album version? Or some sort of demo? I've never heard backing vocals on that track. Worth a video perhaps?

Sad to hear this. I always loved Noel, but if he has no sense of honesty, integrity or generosity, then I genuinely feel sad for him. His talent is not in doubt. His character and decency is what's in doubt.

Probably McGee giving a young Noel some cut throat advice beforehand in regards to taking all the initial credit instead of sharing it with The Real People, at least that’s what I think would have happened.

Noel's greatest strength looks to be his ability to schmooze with all types of people. From the scally working class lads of the council estates of the NW to the champagne sipping right on crowds of the media machines of the BBC and record labels. Without that I don't think Oasis would have got where they did. By extension neither would any band he *ahem* borrowed *ahem* lyrics or melodies from. Morally what he has done could be seen as questionable but I don't think there are many people that could have pulled together the hype machine that was Oasis the way he did and put out some choice music into the bargain.

im not surprised TRP got pushed to one side and weren't credited. i'd followed them until their first album, and saw them live shortly after it. they'd looked very promising, but afaik a lot of ep tracks were reused and it took the momentum out of it. not a surprising way to construct the album, as the eps were quite under the radar. NG has long pushed other's contributions or emphasised his own. i actually didn't know TRP were involved in oasis at all.

Noel wanted to create the impression that he did it all on his own, I remember him saying that most of definitely maybe was written when he was working laying gas pipes!

I was a fan of Oasis back in the day, but seriously, I don't see why Noel can't cough up a few grand and the writing credits, after all, he's loaded, and probably will be for the rest of his life.

This is old news but good to see others know of it too. Liam actually credits the real people also as 1 of his favourite bands and has mentioned them a few times to the way he was feeling at the time.

I think Noel did it specifically to retain/attain his image as the mastermind behind Oasis and the idea of having some other band take even partial credit for "his band" or "his people" was too tough for him to let go.

It’s been said by quite a few people in the band and close to the band that Noel changed after they got the record deal. Not for the better either. The Real People were on the Definitely Maybe DVD documentary though. Never understood that considering what had happened in the past.

I haven't followed Oasis' actions from mid 90's and don't know much about their work, but I find myself looking at my 4th video of this channel. Seems they were as troubled as Kinks, one of my favorite bands, and as in the case of Oasis much of the turmoil seems to be caused by the brothers as in Kinks. Great work!

You can't be saying he could be a nice guy who had some sort of shitty spell. Noel Gallagher's been at it his entire life. Stealing songs from the people who were intrinsic to his bands everthing is not a one off scumbag move. He even stitched them up not allowing them the comparible pittance they were offered. Gallagher burgled houses you know, and talks off like it's nothing, I'm from the same sort of background, I didn't burgle my neighbours. The main reason he faded so quickly from the heights he was at is because having stolen so much of his music there was little chance he could keep doing it..... Liam got the bad press but it was his bellend brother who was the wrongun.
