Share: How did it go for you through the years?
Anti consumerism, anti hauls, minimalism, essentialism, mindful hedonism - these terms are all over the place. Yet our perfume community seems almost impervious to them beyond lip service. Being far from saint, I wanted to share how it all started: overspending, obsessions with sales, mania of a good deal, how the perfume collection got build, got out of control. Looking 5-7 years back it is almost unbelievable HOW i was shopping, even though i loved perfumes all my life. The way I interacted and shopped for them changed dramatically. This is part 1.

Perfume has become an addiction for me now... I know it’s a problem, because once I buy a perfume, I instantly think of another that I want. I went from 20 perfumes to 70 during this pandemic! I’ve spent close to $4000 since this pandemic started. I’m so embarrassed. I’m literally hiding packing from my family when I come in the door... that’s how I know it’s a problem. So currently what I do, is I just go to Ulta or Macy once a week to just smell perfume ( but not buy).., then I leave! That seems to help me curve my need to buy a new fragrance. I think I crave the feel of smelling something new, but don’t care to buy anymore. So this has been working. Good luck everyone ❤️

I can relate. I try to stop now because I realised most blind buys I don't even like and need to sell. Also, I like the thrill of ordering a new one because sometimes when it arrives, I'm not even interested anymore

I think that is what is for me as well. The smell sends me in a Euphoric moment, it helps with stress and anxiety while in nursing school.

I started collecting in 2016. Up until then I only had 2 perfumes at any one time , I was searching for my signature scent , so I only bought 1-2 at a time , used up and moved on to another. I remember going to you tube to see what is popular/ high praised in perfumery to choose my next scent and discovered this fragrance community and reviewers and realised people have like fragrance wardrobe...lol and that’s how I fell in this black hole😂

I went from 7 to 68 in a year. :/ I’m trying to stop. I buy samples almost every day. Help. If only it was designer. I remember how I used to say $60 was too much, now I mostly buy niche and it seems normal to spend $300. Help.

I'm sorry that you're distressed. I understand how it can get out of hand. You need to go cold turkey. It helped me personally. Delete all shopping apps, stop visiting any shopping websites (not just fragrance websites) and unsubscribe from all perfume influencers , reviewers. Basically, try and cut yourself off from anything perfume related. It will be hard for around 2 weeks but then it will get easier and eventually you probably won't even think about it. Also, I just realised that this is an old comment. So I hope you've got your shopping addiction in control. If not, do give my suggestion a try. I'm sure it will help you. Love

Only from personal experience: 1 - clean up your collection. Sell all that you. can live without on Mercari (they allow used perfumes sale). 2 - choose one or two in each segment (for example, floral, chocolate, coffee, musky, fruity, tropical, etc.) and keep those, you must love them so much that you can't live without them. I found that reducing my collection was so liberating and I felt I was finally in control. 3 - if you're tempted to buy a new fragrance you must get rid of something else in your collection. 4 - buying samples I personally think is OK but there should be a limit, like, 10 samples a month and don't buy anything more than 1ml sample. You can do it! 🙂

I've gone back and forth between makeup, skincare, fragrance, and clothing. I feel like the fragrance obsession is somehow the worst for me. There are a few reasons why that might be: 1) The perfume world is the most inclined toward selling fantasy, nostalgia, and comfort 2) Since the experience of scent is intangible, the mystery and awe draws you in. Online shopping exacerbates this feeling - you can look at internet photos of makeup and clothing and at least get a good sense of what they're like, but you can't really do that with fragrance. You're forced to buy samples or blind buy full sizes 3) I'm just not as enchanted by the other categories. There are only so many varieties of clothing and items one can actually wear, and only so much difference from one skincare product to the next. But fragrance? The possibilities are endless! I've been able to see through the hype for clothing, makeup, and skin care, but I'm still very susceptible to fragrance hype. Thank you so much for sharing your story. I love the concept of "mindful hedonism," too.

This video resonates with me so well. I’ve always loved perfume.I had 5 in my collection and I loved them all. I started watching popular KZfaqrs and in 18 months I have spent over 15,000 US dollars for mostly niche frags. I now have 160 perfumes and I’m done. Done with all this massive spending. Unless something that I discover knocks my socks off and isn’t in the 200 to 400 dollar price range, I will enjoy what I have. Thanks for the info. ❤

I totally agree with you, sister. I started 3 months ago and I now have almost 90 bottles. I'm done. It seems like an insatiable thirst that we can never satisfy. I have way too many fragrances and have several that I've never even opened. So, I've decided to only stick to 14 fragrances that are my true favorites. If, when they run out ill purchase some more

I spend roughly 400 a month on perfume. I have to stop but companies won't stop releasing new fragrances and I get tired of fragrances way to fast so I sell everything on Mercari and take about 3 trips a week to the post office shipping out perfume. The money I make on my old fragrances I turn around and buy new. Its a never ending cycle

It's natural for a women to obsessed with something at one point of a time, I guess...me, myself has evolved from BBW candles - BBW body mist - High end makeup - Sneakers - Luxury makeup - Luxury handbags - I have too many too much of everything - gave up & de clutter most of the things - Swore to be a minimalist starting Oct 2019, got bored during Covid19 and I found perfume communities in YT May 2020, BAMMM!! 🔥🔥from 15 perfume, now I have 70 plus and still want more 😭😭

Lmao...haha so relatable. Lol actually I pretty much started off the same way and have downsized many of my things and am happy with my closet and accessory items since I now live in a more minimalist way. However I actually got covid at the beginning of the year and for some time after that I couldn't smell properly so when I got my sense of smell back I started smelling perfumes as a way to strengthen my sense of smell again and I went from having 2 or 3 to having about 14 or 15 in the last few months. I live my new additions but to make sure it doesn't blow out if control I enrolled myself to sentbox to enjoy smaller travel sizes so u can get the feeling trying out other perfumes out there while having time to use up all of my bigger bottles.

I’m into bbw candles too. At least when they go on sale I’m not breaking the bank. But they are so heavy and I move every couple of years which is such a chore. And I also don’t really want to use them if they are more ‘rare’ scents.

If you ever bought a new bottle of L'artisan parfumeur for 30 dollars, that means they still made a profit from it. No company ever sells products below profit unless they're going bankrupt. L'artisan clearly hasn't gone bankrupt and it now sells their 30 dollars fragrances at 4-6 times the price. When I say those are 30$ fragrances I don't mean they're bad, but that's probably a more realistic price for a bottle of perfume, niche or otherwise. The rest is marketing.

I have NEVER been a shopper. I would wear hand me down clothes and would wear a pair of pants until they had holes in the crotch. The only thing I'd spend some money on was makeup. When covid hit I got turned onto online shopping because I wanted to dye my hair and had to order online. The sheer ease of shopping online was awesome! After that, I started buying luxury gothic clothing and purses, then moved on to niche perfumes. I've spent over 20 grand on perfumes and lux gothic clothing just in the past year 😫😫😫 I'm 100 percent addicted to perfumes. The adrenaline of opening that package and squirting that first spray feels amazing. I honestly wish I could stop.

08:19 you spoke how I feel, and I want to come back to these beautiful normal days, until 2015 I usually bought 1 perfume, max. 2 perfumes in one year. Nowadays I want to buy 2 perfumes every week. The money I spent on perfumes I could buy a new and beautiful middle-class car or buy a small piece of Land in my home country.

I was like this first with makeup...then got over that and decluttered and moved to perfume and that got rediculous, I was buying every month.....then got over that. I still lust and buy scents but to keep it under control I have a 1 in 1 out rule. I also cannot go pass the 25 have or my budget for the year. This has helped GREATLY. Now I admire and may sample but It takes a lot to purchase.

Mmm I guess in most cases you can't get over your addiction, you're just switching from one obsession to another... trying to find a more "appropriate" one. I don't know what drives us to have addictions in our lives. I had it in many kinds: bags, make-up, perfume... food... absence of food... books... candles... eh! PS remember the days when you had that nail polish collection? (yeap I watch U for ages...) I guess pretty much the same thing was going on, that's just cheaper... PS I'm into nail polish now... yeap, over 40 bottles in two months... my my. I don't believe in "addictive personalities" though, this seems to be affecting almost everybody... too common.

Loved hearing you go through your fragrancenet history! I can't tell you how much I relate to this... 2013 was the year I discovered fragrancenet and it was all over for me... I remember being amazed and over the moon that I could buy fragrances so heavily discounted... I was skeptical the first time, but once I received them and they were the real thing I was hooked. Once and twice a month I was making $200-$300 orders. In 2014 those orders began tapering off but still the addiction was rampant. My first fragrancenet order was for 5 fragrances - 2 for my then boyfriend now husband and 3 for me... Versace Man Eau Fraiche, JPG La Male, Hugo Hugo Boss Women, DKNY Be Delicious Fresh Blossom and Nanette Lepore Nanette Lepore. I only used the 20% off too!! Oh how little I knew then ☺️ There were a few 21% off sprinkled in there, so I wonder if that was the best they offered at the time? I dont recall, but seeing some of those prices for now very rare and expensive gems is bittersweet. 🦋

Especially when you talked about friends paying full price for perfume (THAT HURTS and we must not let that happen!!! lol)

I bought perfume for the first time in a decade this last November and it unleashed a new passion or hobby for me and I definitely do not buy one at a time hahaha. These companies must have insane markups because fragrance ultimately is just a bit of essential oil suspended in alcohol. In most instances I would wager that the bottles cost more than the fragrance. I am all about brands that sell amazing fragrance in bad packaging, I think Granada is my favorite in that category. They are a nice brand trying to enter the lux market but they have crooked sticky labels on all of their bottles.

I used to watch you in Russian back in the day, and I bought Sea and Sun in Cadaques cause of your review, it's a decent summer fragrance, I still have about 10 mil of it now. I'm aware I've an issue with shopping and collecting, but that's just fragrances, I luckily don't fancy buying clothes and somehow cooled off about makeup (well just turned 30 really and started reading about skincare and became rather picky). My addiction (well not in a medical sense I guess) is rather weird: I started to buy a perfume every month, but I've almost never exceed 1 perfume per month (presents don't count), back in the day I didn't buy perfumes that exceeded 50 euro, well now I've upped to 100 as I'm more stable financially but I never cross that line. I also don't really hunt for sales, well I do google it a bit but searching for discount codes have always been too much of an effort. Weird enough, I buy only the biggest bottle, at least 60 mil, if the price exceeds a 100 euro, I don't buy a fragrance and if a fragrance is only sold in a bottle less than 60 mil I don't buy it. I also never buy samples. It's a weird kind of behaviour and I'm not good at pinpointing my reasons it just feels comfy this way. So I've never overspent, but I've collected more than 150 full bottles for now and although it's just one small cupboard it takes a toll on me - I can't keep all that in sight, I can't wear all of them long enough to make some period of life associate with each particular fragrance, and selling is too much of a hustle ... I've never experienced any negative effects of the collecting really, no fragrance even went bad... but I still feel weird about it. I keep buying one fragrance per month though. Donno, it's weird. I could stop, but could I, as I'm collecting for a decade now.

Hahahaha I had a blast with this video, I feel so represented by you 100% ...I am with U gurl, U r not alone ....anyway you are leaving it bouncing here...your next video should be " How to smart up and get the best deals off the web" ...cause really I don´t even know them myself....well I live in Scandinavia anyway, so I really don´t use much of F.Net or Perfume.com....every once in a while I order something mostly from Perfume.com (has better shipping costs to Europe)...but I have noticed that "tricky" and even false % discount they have sometimes but I guess that it´s the robot price app they use.... I tend to buy in some already "discount net stores" mostly from Sweeden....the prices are very cheap compared to the perfumery shops here in DK.....the other day though there was a 70% discount on Burberry Her 100ml EDP....but that was because of the black friday got canceled cuz the virus here in my town.....so it was lucky day....but other than that, I really am NO expert in discount codes, so it would be very usefull to have some kind of orientation !!!! hils from Denmark dear!

Thanks for the video. Luckily for me, I have the pickiest nose on this planet. I LOVE scents, but 99.999% of the perfumes out there (including niche/botique) are boring in my opinion on my skin. Not much ingenuity. I can't buy 2 perfumes in the same vibe, because I'll always reach only for the better one. I struggle to find the next perfume to buy. I can hardly squeeze 2 full bottles a year, and it's usually when an interesting perfume is discontinued and i want to have it for posterity (my last one was Bracken Man which is discontinued but is good enough to have). I use decants and samples instead of FB. To be a FB worthy perfume, it has to perform magic/wonders on my skin. I have less than 30 FBs + 20 decants (plus few dozens samples). It's May. By black Friday - November - I don't think I'll find another FB worthy perfume... I guess I'll buy a decant then. So, I'm lucky, or otherwise I'd be broke.

Please don’t fall down the rabbit hole, please stay away! Perfume addiction and lure is real! I went from 3 perfumes to 60 bottles and over 30 decants since January this year (in 7 months). The addiction is real! no human needs this many perfumes! Once you start it is so hard to stop 🛑

I got started January 2019 with a decant of Shalimar Souffle de Parfum off eBay. Smurfygurly inspired that buy. I have been really strict with sampling first if I can or getting decants. I currently own around 40 full bottles combined with my husband, but then another 10 pen sprays/larger decants, and a very large collection of samples from living near awesome malls in metropolitan areas. Not gonna lie tho, I got four of those bottles in the last week, total $75 😍 I have too much fun with the hunt sometimes.

When Jo Malone was hyped by youtubers I used to follow and it became so popular that they launched boutiques in the PH, I bought RETAIL for them. $200+ for one Cologne Intense... and I bought two. F*ck me. I still use them to this day tho. I like the scents so much, but the longevity is crappy. I just can't believe I justified buying those for that kind of price. :((

I would like to know if your purchases still smell the same/good, after a decade, how do you preserve them? How long can we store perfumes? 😊

as long as you like their smell, just like wine. actually perfumes are higher in alcohol % so theoretically they can store even longer than wine

I am obsessed with scents, i always have ever since being a kid, however, i have a very sensitive sense of smell. A lot of perfumes i don't like as i have scent/light inducing migraines. I have 7 full sized bottles and some samples, so in a way, I'm glad for my picky nose!! 😂

I used to have the same reaction to quite a few ingridients, especially tuberose accords. Which ones are your faves sbd which ones do give you migranes?

@MariaMeliora anything very sweet/sickly smelling, like Sol de Janeiro no. 39 or synthetic smelling. I hate the skin scents too, JHAG not a perfume, Molecule 01 etc, they smell really weird to my nose, like mould or something. Also strong cologne on men, absolutely hate, hate Dior Sauvage. My favourites are probably Penhaligons Heartless Helen & Penhaligons Orange 🍊 Blossom, MFK A la Rose🌹 Burberry Her, Carolina Herrera Virgin Mint, Chanel Coco L'eau Privee, Diptyque Philosykos and Hibiscus Palm also anything with Violet. I like very clean, natural scents basically 👌

Да, парфюмерное сообщество - это особый клан)) Назвать коллекцию ароматов в 200 - 300 флаконов консьюмеризмом - значит обидеть чувства влюбленного в парфюмерию)) Маша, какая же интересная тема для рассуждения 💓 - "купаюсь в ней, как в Лагуне Сальвадора Дали")) Лет 15 назад я старательно искала свой аромат - один, который бы мне очень нравился и ассоциировался со мной...- нашла, но его сняли с производства - это была Зелёная Красотка от Нина Ричи.. А дальше пошел азарт поиска и потребительства - бездонная поглощающая бочка, не имеющая предела насыщения - и мне стало страшно😳😱 Теперь я считаю, что минимализм и антиконсьюмеризм даже в любимом увлечении только на пользу🤗❤️

2017…2017….let me think, oh yeah. that was back when I could actually EASILY afford to spend $200 to $300 a month on perfume, before this administration’s fked up economic policies and inflation totally wiped out my ENTIRE I budget for buying any perfume whatsoever.
