Three Soviet T-34 tanks edged forward, followed closely by Red Army Infantry. The lead tank clanked to a stop, while its turret rotated the main gun trying to intimidate any Germans watching. Suddenly, the lead tank's hatch opened and a head appeared with binoculars to scan the scene. In front of these three steel beasts is a young 19-year-old-Austrian born sniper with only his wits and his bolt-action rifle.
From 150 yards away, the young sniper focused the center of his scope on the Soviet tank commander's head, then squeezed the trigger. A red splat hit the hatch as the Soviet tanker sank into the bowels of his tank. The well-aimed bullet marked the beginning of another savage melee on the Eastern Front. Josef "Sepp" Allerberger was the 19-year-old-Austrian sniper who single handedly changed the course of the engagement that day. By war's end, Allerberger would go down as one of the most lethal sniper's of the German Wehrmacht.

Reading his book right now, you only get "official" credit for confirmed kills if an officer/observer verify them. I think many veterans sniper numbers on all sides true numbers are probably double, triple maybe more what is recorded. Edit: Thank you for posting this video, its alot more clear about the umbrella thing with picture/video than me just imagining it. 👍

Sniping is physically punishing & the mental focus is intense. It's nothing like anything Hollywood presents.

Field craft is a term I learned reading Sepp Allerberger Memoirs. Sniping along with Field Craft.

All his kills had to be confirmed by a spotter. The soviets often did not use spotters.

" There were single operators, sniper and observer pairs, sniper pairs and companies up to sixty strong" Sepp Allerberger Memoirs after him and his troops wiped out a company of Russian female snipers who were shooting from a forest in the trees. The shot well but didn't practice field craft so the veteran Sniper was able to kill them.

Good video. But what happened with him and those tanks that you mentioned in the beginning of the video?

According to Sepp's memoir, the three tanks fired a few shells at the town, then withdrew as the commander of the three tanks was the likely casualty. Throwing them into disarray, the tanks withdrew for the day. Sepp slowly maneuvered to reposition and the town stayed in German hands that day with the main defending troops and anti-tank defenses of his regiment.
