American television sitcom Sister, Sister turned its balance of healthy parent involvement, even-keeled kids, and typical teenage problems into a successful formula that has led to a long life in syndication since the series ended over 2 decades ago. The show managed to maintain its loyal fan base over time by providing the whole family with enjoyable and relatable experiences. Teens can see themselves in the twins as they experience typical problems in high school with friends, boys, and each another and parents can appreciate the lessons learned and family discussions that take place in each episode.

I love the fact that Tia and Tamera were beautiful, smart girls and woman (later in the show) and didn’t have to show skin or kiss their “boyfriends” etc. I always loved that about them, they let their acting shine they didn’t have to use their bodies or do “sexy or sexual” things to have a great show and great careers. Fun Fact: During his MY WAY era Usher not only appeared/performed on Sister Sister with YOU MAKE ME WANNA but he also did on Moesha and The Parent Hood. His agent was smart af. I remember all three times. It was also wise and smart for them to make him an actual character on Moesha as well as incorporate his SLOW JAM song during Tamera and Jordan’s Cinderella night dance. One of the best plots of Sister Sister was with Tia and Tyreke. Their first date episode, break-up episode and rekindal episode was so mature and insightful and made for a great story arc. I loved the show’s last two seasons the most. I remember being so exciting anticipating the musical perfomances of each artist that guest starred on the show while looking forward to how Tia and Tamera were going to either sneak away to see the artist performance or how they would get the artist to perform at the high school or college. Sister Sister and Moesha were not only the best teen shows of the 90s but one of the best positive African-American representation of that decade.

This right here.... 💯! Growing up in the 90s, we were blessed to experience great shows like Moesha and Sister, Sister in real time. I miss sitcoms that represented US in a more relatable and less stereotypical way. I really do hope history will repeat itself where reality shows will be few and far in between while wholesome sitcoms with a diverse cast will be abundant. ❤

@@danavixen6274 perfect comment! Couldn’t agree with you more! Love watching them in real time when they premiered on the UPN and the WB networks. Two prime examples of your comment: when Tia and her professor(Brian Mcknight) had that flavorful, elegant dance to YOU’RE THE ONLY ONE FOR ME at the restaurant in her fantasy. The classy, intellectual episode with Moesha preparing to lose her virginity to Aaron and how well done the dialogue throughout the episode was as well as how smooth that scene was with the background music playing while they were speaking before “getting ready” and how she discontinued it. 🙌🏾

One of the best black 90s sitcoms. Also one thing about the show I find interesting is the evolution of the twins wardrobe/style. In the earlier seasons I like to think that the combination of the denim and the bright colors that they wear in the first 4 1/2 seasons represents their rambunctious teenage sides. The 2nd half of season 4 and seasons 5 & 6 they start to wear more earth tone colors and the wardrobe is more form fitting. Their wardrobe in seasons 5 & 6 shows them as sophisticated young women.

And not to mention that Sister, Sister recycled a lot of actors for example Aaron Lohr played a cashier and then he played Marlon, Alexis Fields played a friend of Rhonda and then she played Diavian, the guy who played Tia's boyfriend Kyle who had a little brother named Clayton and then he played Charles, Brian McKnight played Keith and he played a singer named Clarence Walker, Tahj Mowry played three characters Tahj, Sammy and his character from Smart Guy TJ Henderson, Gabrielle Union played Vanessa and Shawn. Jason Weaver also played two characters on the show as well one in the summer school episode and Boy from the Hood. And Kid from Kid n Play played a rapper named Chilly T and he later played Tia's boss Clark. This reminds me of New York Undercover they also recycled actors too

Carmen Carter is the name of the singer who sang the original theme song for Sister, Sister. She has also added her vocal artistry to the theme songs for Moesha, Touched by an Angel, Hangin’ with Mr. Cooper and Strong Medicine.

I will always say that Sister Sister was our Boy Meets World(loved this show to). The transition from teen topics to young adult topics and many down to earth plot lines was so great. I also loved that the parents dated, but still decided not to be with one another at the end. It deserved a few more seasons.

I felt bad for the way Suzanne Somers was treated on Three's Company. John Ritter got paid quite a bit more, which she felt was was due to sexism, which they pretty much confessed to. When she asked for a pay raise (that was equal to his pay rate), they pretty much laughed in her face and told her if they raised her to this, then they would have to raise Janice's to this as well, and raise John's in equal porportions. They were so cruel and insulting, and Janice warned her that she should back down cause she was playing with fire. Sure enough, they got rid of her and replaced her with another willing to accept the lesser pay. Due to her current contract, they had her appear at the end of shows for a short scene of her calling via phone. They really tried to make her look bad, as if she was just being greedy, but I never seen it this way. She was a pioneer for women's rights, and even if her actions hurt her at the time, she didn't back down. That's takes a lot of strength and courage. I don't really know the struggles Tia and Tamera faced, but they are certainly pioneers also in equality. So wise also to acknowledge where the problems stem from, not blaming anyone, but recognizing the lower budget and chipping away at fixing these type of issues. Very brave to speak so public, and being so fair in your analysis. It's people like this that make the world a better place. God bless.

Damn, I'm shocked & disgusted to hear of the girls being blatantly told they couldn't be on the cover of a teen magazine, cause they were black, & it wouldn't sell!!! I saw Sister, Sister at just the right time, while going through adolescence, & both Tia & Tamera, were huge crushes of mine!! Sister, sister was such a good, positive, entertaining, black sitcom. The kind we rarely get, that's free of buffoonery, & stereotypes, & that actually had a proper ending!! Not to mention, the show has also aged well. Go home Roger!!!!
