People who think there are too many dark and gritty shows on today’s TV landscape may look back fondly on the ‘90s as a simpler time for television, but those people are clearly cherry-picking the happy moments. Plenty of ‘90s shows got really dark, and it often happened on otherwise light shows.
Sometimes, a sitcom would have a very special episode about a serious topic, while other times, they simply opted for a bit of dark comedy. From the finale of Roseanne that decided to go out on a sad note to the scariest episode Seinfeld ever aired, let’s take a look at some of the darkest episodes from ‘90s TV shows.
#90s #Sitcom #TVShows
'The Boogieman' - Quantum Leap | 0:00
'Into that Good Night' - Roseanne | 1:15
'The Opera' - Seinfeld | 2:04
'Slow Tango in South Seattle' - Frasier | 2:49
'The One with the Ick Factor' - Friends | 3:45
'72 Hours' - The Golden Girls | 4:37
'Shape Up' - Full House | 5:27
'None for the Road' - Clueless | 6:19
'The Next Fifty Years' - Beverly Hills, 90210 | 7:12
'Cult Fiction' - Boy Meets World | 7:50
'The Longest Day' - Home Improvement | 8:32
'Jessie's Song' - Saved By the Bell | 9:12

What's so *Dark* about the *FRIENDS* episode ? ...Other than the Lying aspect . So what Monica was 26 and was Ethan 17 , that's only a 9 yr age difference ... an as for Monica " some how avoids prison " , The show takes place in New York and the age of *consent* is 17 .. so *nothing* illegal happen ~ 😈🔺🦋

ThisBitch Wow, what a story. Your “father” sounds like a pompous narcissist too. He wants credit for something he doesn’t deserve. Parenting is a privilege, not a right. If he won’t ever let you forget the one time you used his name, he’s on a lifelong power trip. I can relate. My story’s a lot like yours and my “father” is so much like yours. As an adult, I’ve had to terminate any relationship at all. He’s still angry about it, 4 years later, but I have a lot less pain. I don’t know how young or old you are, but my advice would be to start setting boundaries for him now. That’s what I did first, to see if his behavior would be better. When it didn’t after a few years, I said “see ya later.” Good luck ✌🏼
@jkaygoulet
@jkaygoulet 4 жыл бұрын
@ThisBitch I'm really sorry you had to go through that. The silver lining though, is that you are a better person for not having him around & your mom going against his wish shows how nich she really, truly DID want you & loved you before even meeting you. You are stronger now for having to grow up with those wounds & you will take those lessons forward in life to have compassion & understanding for others & especially for your kids (if & when you choose to have any.) It's hard to see the light in such a dark situation, but I promise you it's there. Your experiences have shaped you in to exactly the person you were designed to be & people who have been hurt & know pain, understand the value of love, generosity, and empathy on a level others simply can't fathom. Take that pain and light your fire with it. Use that fire to change the world & help others experiencing the same kind of pain & loneliness you had to. And most importantly, DON'T let his screw ups make you bitter. M the things he didn't do, are a sign of all the things wrong with him. Not one single bit of his awful decisions refelct on you or anything being wrong with you. You are perfect. Keep your heart open & give the love that wasn't given to you by his weak ass, knowing that it might change the life of someone going through darkness & pain just like you have. Blessings & love baby. ❤

Boy Meets World had several dark episodes, and I've always thought that people pointing at Cult Fiction as the dark episode is a bit absurd. It was over the top and not believable. Or the episode where Corey takes up drinking to help him get over Topanga and becomes the life of the party...and when he gets caught, his father blames Shawn, creating a very awkward moment. Or how about the episode where Topanga's professor hits on her, over exerts his power on her, tells Corey there's nothing he can do about it, tries to get Corey expelled and tries to flip it on Topanga when she threatens to expose him. Or the episode(s) where Josh, Corey's new born baby brother, is clinging to life and Topanga doesn't like the way Corey is handling the whole situation. There probably at least 3 more episodes that are much darker and explore much more realistic problems that teens face. Not to downplay the seriousness of cults...they're just not something most people actually encounter.

Josh When I first watched that episode, I believe I was about 9 or 10 years old and that was the first time I ever heard of those terms Danny used warning DJ such as “anorexia” and bulimia”. Given that eating disorders tend to be higher with women compared to men, this made me very curious as to what those eating disorders were exactly and it was like a wake up call as to what problems I could have ran into when I got older into adolescence. Luckily, I never dealt with ED when I was a teen and don’t have body issues, but it’s sad as to how I’ve actually witnessed it now in the modern era on social media with controversial figures like Eugina Cooney.

There was also a pretty disturbing “very special episode” of Smart Guy that dealt with pedophilia/child pornography. T.J and his friend met who they thought was another kid online and agreed to purchase bootleg games from him, only to find out upon meeting in person that it was an older man. The man laters lures them to his house with the promise of more games but then tries to convince them to strip down to their underwear and show them pictures of other kids he’s taken.

@@hadleymccool2193 I always thought the ending where he says "Sam, you saved Jackie" was because maybe in the original history Lee Harvey Oswald ended up shooting both of them (aka the bullet angle went through John and hit Jackie, killing them both) but because there was another person in his body the angle was slightly altered. We think Sam's there to stop Oswald from killing John, but what if he was there to really save Jackie and the future she would bring.

Because one is an 18 year old virgin and the other is his 40 year old teacher. Consenting adults yes, but it was a creepy idea for a 90’s sitcom. Frasier was one of the smartest sitcoms on television and this episode was another example why. If it was a 40 year old man taking the virginity of his 18 year old student there would be no question it would look creepy and disturbing. Yet when it is an older woman taking advantage of a teenage man our public perception deems it to be ok. It’s a double standard and Frasier brought the subject to light.

Alice Collins every series in the mid-late 80s did an episode on AIDS. It was the hot button topic at the time. I hate the fact that tv shows today don’t focus on the hot button topics of the day like they used to. In the 80s you had episodes of drugs (as there was an epidemic at the time), AIDS (it was a new thing and most didn’t know much about it and to an extent still don’t), gun violence, mental health, bullying, ect. We could learn a lot from these old shows. They at least tried to teach the audience a little something. Now it’s just crappy one liners, whole series about someone sleeping with someone else (or half the city) and making jokes about it and not one real lesson to be learned.

Monroe gets kidnapped and sexually tortured. Punky Brewster. Punky thinks her dad will be killed by a serial killer. Facts of Life. Natalie is sexually assaulted. Mr. Belvedere. Wesley is sexually assaulted at camp. All in the Family. Edith is raped on her birthday after a home invasion.

The Roseanne season finale FUCKED ME UP. I watched that show all the time with my mom in the early 2000s, but I never saw the ending. Just recently I decided to rewatch all the seasons and my mother spoiled the end for me. I had a mental breakdown finding out Dan had an affair, but it got worse when I found out he had actually died.

Hi @@RashadSims-bh3zz ! Fair opinion :) I reckon the message(s) were AIDS awareness and respect for other humans. The bully warned Joey about his blood with respect, and in turn Joey showed respect by demonstrating compassion towards his now former bully. We also need to remember the phone call from the the bully's former girlfriend (sex partner) to tell him about her HIV positive condition. Check out the episode again - there will never be another Degrassi!

BelaayyasMusic exactly. In the 90s it didn’t matter where you lived. Thin was in. Unlike nowadays where girls seem to want to be curvy. It’s such a foreign concept to me.

m0L3ify if I had gone to every funeral for every student that died between my 7th and 12th grade years, I would of been very busy. Suicides, car accidents, cancer...No one shot them selves, but hanging them selves in a mental institution (1) and standing in front of a train (2) ain’t much better. Not a great thing for a small farming community with a graduating class of less then a 100.

what about both Fresh Prince and Family Matters episodes centering around guns? On Fresh Prince, Will takes a bullet for Carlton when they're mugged at an ATM and Carlton ends up buying a gun out of fear....on Family Matters, a psycho student threatens Laura & Steve with a gun, and later shoots a friend of theirs & Maxine's to get her shoes. That shit was DARK.

Few other dark 1990s show moments. "FAMILY MATTERS": When that thug girl shot the girl portrayed by Trina McGee (was also Angela in "BOYS MEETS WORLDS") which sparked a debate between the Winslows and others in the show about gun violence. #SquashIt! "LIVING SINGLE": A Halloween episode; Overton pulled a prank on Maxine that didn't scare her. He finally did one that scared her hard by faking falling down the stairs in front of her and faking his death. I forget who, but someone said to Maxine it must have scared her to death. Maxine walked away as she said "It did." and walked through a closed door to the outside of the main apartment, indicating that she died which shocked them and freaked the FRICK outta me when I watched it as a kid. "THE FRESH PRINCE OF BEL-AIR": Will gets shot and Carlton gets very serious about the situation since Will got in the way of Carlton leading to Carlton buy a gun and him arguing with Will about it in the hospital Will was staying. "POWER RANGERS⚡LOST GALAXY": Pink Galaxy Ranger, Kendrix Morgan had to stop Pink Space Ranger, Cassie Chan's Morpher from exploding after Pink Psycho Ranger purposely broke it. Kendrix ended up absorbing the bulk of the sudden explosion which killed Kendrix, sending her spirit to the Morphing Grid in a Force Ghost-ish way. "HANGIN' WITH MR. COOPER": Omar Gooding's character dated Karan Ashley's character (Karan Ashley was also the 2nd Yellow Mighty Morphin' Ranger) who was later shot to death due to a drive-by. Omar's character had a hard time trying to comprehend it as Mark (Mr. Cooper played by Mark Curry) did his best to console and comfort him. I know there are other black sitcoms with notable dark moments in the 1990s but I forget the exact details.
