It turns out I am a train buff from a very early age. This is recently re-discovered Super 8mm cine film of me and the family at the Dart Valley Railway, Buckfastleigh, Devon. It was originally shot by dad, including sound.
We were having a holiday at Butlins, Minehead, Somerset and we stopped off at the Dart Valley. I was about 18 months old at the time and seemed to enjoy the ride, although my face didn't show it.
My older sister gives a bit of a running commentary, including helping me with my talking. She's called Rachel, but I couldn't say that at the time, and used to say Ruh-Ruh.
The rest of the narration was dad and it's nice to hear his voice. I am still transferring cine film to digital, if you have any, please visit my website for a price.

Brilliant. I remember the Western on the miniature line at Minehead from about 1978. Its amazing to see Buckfastleigh station without all the sheds but I guess this is how they earn a living to keep it going.

Great film. Alan Gosling is driving 1638. Those four caravans seen at Buckfastleigh provided volunteer accommodation. There were many “entertaining” evenings spent in them. The Damo B van seen in the siding (now loop) at Staverton has been a pretty permanent resident there for years. The last bit with 6412 is of course at Blue Anchor on the WSR. Happily the loco is now based at Buckfastleigh.

Nice to see the early footage of the West Somerset as well. Butlins at Minehead (in Somerset BTW) has changed as much as the railways have in the intervening years.

I actually can't believe I knew that it was in Somerset, as someone corrected me before. My bad, I will change it now.

I can't believe you have a gwr Pannier with a deep, " hooter" as opposed to the melodious swindon whistle. Just doesn't sound right on a Swindon built engine.

As I recall, dad didn't edit the sounds, it was all recorded on the day. Although I was only about 18 months old when he shot it, so I might be wrong.

@@AarchiveRailways Oh of course but it seems odd that Buckfastleigh would give an ex GWR loco a stanier type whistle unless there no other Swindon Whistles available.
