What makes this even cooler is that these themes were made by two different composers. Who just so happen to be Hans freaking Zimmer and Alan Silvestri. In my opinion two of the greatest composers of our time.

Neither copied either. It's a complete fluke. There is a slight fun fact to this though, Silvestri was actually doing the first pirates film and had written some material. He was booted out of the blue due to "Creative differences". Gore Verbinski had worked with Hans before but he was busy at the time, Hans could only really afford one day to write something for the film. Klaus Badelt ended up scoring most of the film but only after he, Hans and Geoff Zanelli got smash-drunk at 3AM and wrote a demo suite with the main themes. You can still find this original demo online (4:56AM). Klaus wrapped up the whole score under 20 days. Obviously, because they got hammered, it's a grey area of how much of it is Hans, Geoff or Klaus when it comes to those themes. Especially whether or not they used the material Silvestri had originally written.

The Polar Express came out in 2004, and Dead Man’s Chest came out in 2006-so it’s possible Hans Zimmer was influenced by Silvestri’s score, consciously or otherwise.
