why is it relatively common in english to call ships or maybe countries "she"? i always say "it" because that is the way it works in german too
@DavidWillisSLS2 жыл бұрын
No clue. That’s a good question tho!
@dimanyak373 Жыл бұрын
Because a long time ago English had grammatical gender and it affected a lot of stuff like articles or pronouns. Through time grammatical gender in English disappeared everywhere except of some french loanwords and 3rd person pronouns. The word "ship" and names for ships have feminine gender, though it appears only in 3rd person pronouns. It's important to note that grammatical gender is not connected to the real gender and in Proto Indo-European there were only two genders: animate and inanimate. It was kinda useful in the prehistorical times, but then animate gender separated into masculine and feminine and inanimate just got called neuter. It's the most common gender system in Indo-European languages, which include almost all european languages plus some languages in India and the Middle-East. I have a very weird combination of interests.

@@dimanyak373 I always thought it was weird how Spanish had grammatical gender, it’s so interesting that English used to have it too!

@@rustyshackleford234 English actually is the weird one in this, as most Indo-European languages have grammatical gender and English is the one without

"nothing is going to stop us" congress, bc any way you slice it, long term lunar exploration, or just a single mars mission, will cost 10s of billions

congress will be happy to pay for it if SLS is involved!

are you sure? The reason they're running everything CC style is they heard they can save money

Saturn 5 is No comparison to STARSHIP. #1 Starship has twice the power, #2 Reusability. Just for starters.
