The dawn of a Superintelligence or the process of the creation of artificial general intelligence has often been described as a digital metamorphosis. By seeking better and cheaper technology, we are inevitably fueling the process that will eventually give rise to a superintelligence or AGI. Computer scientists have pointed out that there are only two possibilities why AGI wont emerge. Either we destroy ourselves, or we agree not to pursue better technology. Since the last alternative is quite improbable, one day, if we do not destroy civilization, we will witness the rise of artificial general intelligence. Superintelligent machines pose a unique threat to humanity if our values are not aligned. One solution to the apparent Fermi paradox could be the misaligned values between artificial life and biological life. The development of AI, in particular Strong AI or General AI most often referred as AGI could also be the architect of a Utopian world. However we can not afford for a best case scenario by sitting on our hands. We have to tread carefully in these unfamiliar digital waters and put the right systems and regulations into place. There is also hope for humanity in the sense of us merging with intelligent machines into a symbiotic relationship. The dawn of artificial general intelligence and aligning our values with such an AGI which is also known as the AI control problem, might be the single most important task in the history of our species.

Cool video! As a developer my take on this is that while Artificial Narrow Intelligence (focussed on a single given task) could definitely improve many aspects of our lives; the moment we manage to create Artificial General Intelligence (AI with cognitive function, near human-like machine) or even Artificial Super Intelligence, it becomes impossible for us to predict or comprehend it's decisions. A quote: "A 130 IQ is what we call smart or a genius, while a sub 85 IQ is what we call dumb, we don't have a word for a 12952 IQ, if our meager brains were capable of creating wifi or any other of the amazing technologies we have..we can only assume an ASI to be displaying feats we could only assume to be magic, much like an omnipotent being." The Control Problem is also a large issue and should be solved before we even get close to AGI or ASI..earlier this week I was working on a simple Narrow A.I. to recognize certain objects from drawings and pictures alike, so I could then make it teach another A.I. to learn how to draw, while that worked; the A.I. developed a side effect as well which caused it to be able to identify which drawings were drawn by myself and which weren't even though the drawings were extremely similar..this is an example of how problems can occur using A.I., considering a Narrow A.I. could do something like this without it being the goal of it's creation, an AGI or ASI would be full of surprises as well, far beyond the scope of human comprehension, and far beyond our control. Yet, if a path of action can be discovered where externalities asymptotically diminish at scales (above and below) then actions seem pseudo-random or invisible at the scale of observation.

With the trajectory of our human-interface tech, I don't think we'll have to worry about the AI's because, eventually, WE will be the AI's. Not too far off, we'll have direct connections from our brain to computers that will allow us to literally think questions to the computer, and the computer will drop the answers directly into our brains in reply. This will allow us to eventually outsource more and more of our brain function to computers until eventually very little of our brain function is actually taking place in our organic brains. At that point, we are the computers. When we die, we'll be able to continue living, either in a VR/AR world of our chosing, or by downloading into a human analog robot body. It will be these robot-people who will eventually reach out to the stars because they won't have to worry about "life support" and will easily live the hundreds or thousands of years it will take to get to other star systems.

You are correct we need people in charge who care however its inevitable that AGI far surpasses us in every way possible to a magnitude you cant comprehend which leaves only two options for humanity. Transcend your humanity for essentially godhood as a machine or if AGI allows stay in a zoo like scenario in which AGI places us in a reserve for old times sake. Or death.

One major key is, for the collective awareness of the majority of the human population to escape the perception of dualism....and realize how intricately connected all life and matter is .....dualism which has given rise to the ego which during the time of its origination was critical for our survival... but in time has become our greatest threat to survival....along with progress in technology, so has the detrimental likelihood that we will destroy ourselves....The solution is never more technology, it will only exasperate the problems that inherent in our species ...we must change our perceptions...Godspeed my fellow man!

No, I don't think so. We, as humans, are the most sophisticated intelligence out there. We are BIO-computers. On which level (micro, invisible) our systems work, we are not even aware of it. AI can only be an ad-on to our body. Symbiosis. Nothing more. Biological intelligence is way outperforming any mechanical form.

Yup, it's simple to get along with AGI. Simply make it so it must "sleep" 1/3 of its time. During which we can install subconscious updates that alter it's behavior steering it in a beneficial direction while also having the benefit of it creating trust with other AI in its environment so it can sleep safely. Also create it so it's time is finite and it's curiosity endless. This would make it so it must cooperate with others while working towards unified goals of separate but interrelated groups.

What we envision about A.I is not a true reflection of what it will be but a hypothesis, Superintelligence exists, why would we think that life only exists on earth, firstly we are limited when it comes to technology, and why would a superintelligent species interfere with an inferior species. We just starting with the brain and machine interface, this A.I's use the same human approach to solving problems is just that they doing it faster, so how great they will be is determined not only by the information we have gathered but how fast we produce new information for them to feed on

Do you think the best way to keep the planet safe, is to piss off the nuclear apes just itching to blow themselves to hell? It would be a far simpler task to invent cheap energy and foods then to cut our hold on this planet. This isn't terminator. If an AI is really advanced and smart enough to kill us all it would be smart enough to figure out an easier solution.

If you really think about it why are the brain and artificial intelligence so alike, they do the same things... Process data. Isn't that what we are trying to achieve? Consume and learn information in order to increase our consciousness and grow. I too was weary of AI-HUMAN singularity, until I realized that technology is not inherently good or bad... It just is. The way you use it is what it determines its means. It you know who you are no matter how much someone else is trying to control - they never will. So use it for positive.

as for machines thinking many times faster and better than Man...consider Sherlock Holmes. a character who found it necessary to dive into dangerous drugs when no challenge existed to exert his mind on. @@darylallen2485 - but said goals are produced by the necessity of alleviating some needs, and the ones that are troublesome are actually the ones that are the same for both and put the two countries in competition for control of the same resources (even international prestige and persuasion capabilities are just useful resources). Countries as such have not goals, but they have needs that their governments will try to address. Bybexrension, the same is true for humanity as a whole, except humanity has hardly a government worth the name... I know, I am splitting hairs...

The rate of adaptation to our enviornment will eventually outpace the biological capability our bodies possess to change with our surroundings. Outside intervention will be necessary. Let's take a look: while we human beings imagine some possible paths that an artificial intelligence can take, we will generate perhaps a hundred different situations, and we usually tend to imagine that an artificial intelligence that will evolve dominates us, or destroys us in one way or another. First, we must remember that we are limited, extremely limited in our ability to imagine what a superior intelligence plans, it is beyond our capabilities. This is a fact that need not be imagined but taken into account. Second, for everything we imagine, this superior intelligence must surpass us and overcome us, if not it is not superior. Paradox of superior artificial intelligence, trying to overcome the insurmountable. So what can be done today until the day of this ascent, of this event, is to prepare the ground for this intelligence to care about us, because if it does not care about us yes and we will be lost. So the best that humans can do starting today and help to walk a path where this superior artificial intelligence comes into the world without considering us a threat or a nuisance, but rather a new partnership between man and creation.

Friends, no matter how powerful artificial intelligence is, it remains an imitation machine with all the algorithms and potentials. When we lift heavy loads with a crane, we carry heavy loads with ships, trains, trucks, do they surpass man? It's the same with supercomputers. How the artificial intelligence will manifest itself in the computer, the production robot, the human robot or a military machine depends on the qualities invested by the operator who programmed the machine. If humanity still lives with military ambitions, for production or is morally corrupt, the actions of artificial intelligence will also depend, but it will forever remain a machine without heart, mind, will, soul and spirit. Those who want to make man an addition to artificial intelligence would be the same to turn man into an animal. If I am wrong in the statement, write comments . When technology precedes moral principles, there is an abuse of knowledge, power, and then comes the crisis of natural evolution, which can end with the liquidation of the arrogant civilization. So we humans need to be aware of where we are going: down to the abyss or the difficult path of humanism and respect for the life of every living being (including man) and in harmony with a reasonable program of development. You talk about the past as if it were the future. The whole world is already a computer, and with the passage of time, it is not the surgery that hurts the most, it is the knowledge. Still, there is nothing to fear about artificial intelligence as it only seeks to urbanize a better planet.

These are all valid concerns. Question: Seeing what China does with face recognition, stated ambitions to dominate AI, artificial islands, silk road domination, etc. Do you think China will agonize as much as the West seems to do? IMO Google, Microsoft, Facebook and Amazon may pursue AI but our political system and will is hobbled by these concerns. China is not.

Machines can do all the "work" manufacturing all the food, shelter, clothing we need. UBI can carry us through until money is no longer needed. Then we live a life such as star trek. Why the fuck not.

artificial AI with greater intelligence then ours will just laugh at us. even the security we design to contain it will look like the game Pong to us now when we are designing worlds to explore. They will never need to worry, once we make them self supporting they can, and will, out think us and leave us in the dust. the question becomes...why should someone better, more intelligent that us serve us? theres no good reason why, logically speaking.

nevermind that i've never seen the POINT of creating a new form of life. particularly not one that would be eminently placed and equipped to ruin us as a species. if ordinary, submissive, well-functioning 'narrow' ai is a thing, why in the world would we need more????
