The day F1 lost its soul

Formula 1 has seen plenty of regulation changes throughout the years but 2014 is one that stand out the most. The switch to 1.6 litre turbocharged engines was a huge moment for the sport, and what we got were engines with incredible technology, but an awful sound. The sound of these new power units were compared to that of a vacuum cleaner or hairdryer, and the shape of the noses on the 2014 cars are still talked about and laughed at to this day. When the 2014 F1 cars first came out of the pits, it truly felt like F1 lost its soul. Enjoy!

I'm glad somebody has made a video on one of the strangest and arguably most important days for F1 in the 2010s. The feeling in the stands was a mixture of shock and confusion, everyone around me had this same expression of disappointment and i'm sure they all had the same feeling of "This is it? That's what they sound like?".

Check out if any "BOSS" races are held near you, "Big Open Single Seaters" and its basically a catch all for high performance open wheel cars from around the world and many series. You can literally see historic F1 cars going against IndyCars, Formula Renaults and Formula 3 and just about anything else (they are divided into BOP classes). V8 and V12 F1 Cars, methanol fuelled IndyCar, all of it. Its not the most competitive as the drivers are not really at the level those cars raced at, they dont want to go full send on valuable historic cars either but its the best way to see these cars in a race.

I'm new to F1, but as an engineering student the quieter engines is satisfying from a scientific standpoint knowing that the engines went toward actually powering the car (i.e. the engine is more efficient and as such more energy goes towards generating thrust rather than generating heat and notably, generating sound), which kinda cancels out on my end.

@henkormel5610

Well as an enginering student you should know current F1 V6 turbo's are limited to 12k rpm. The old turbo engines had no mandatory rev limit so they ran up to 18- 19k rpm. Those engines screamed and howled. Due to increasing mandetory reliability the maximum rev limit is set on 12k rpm. The PU manifacturors had the choice to drop the MGU-H in 2017 and raise the rev limit to 17k. They turned it down due to masive investment obligations they had into the MHU-H by developing it. The MGU-K is the only part in the hybrid system that can be used unrestricted.
@rotkiW9014

Thing is, from an engineering standpoint these engines are absolutely amazing, the technology behind them is mind boggling and there’s no doubt it’s only going to get better But an average f1 fan is not an engineer. They don’t care the engines are more efficient, they care if the thing makes the car go fast and sounds good. That’s why so many people look at the early 2000’s F1 as so much better, despite the racing being way worse than what we have now. Because it sounded good

@@rotkiW9014 You are correct these engines are from an enginering standpoint absolutely mindbogling. What i wanted to say is the lack of noise is not due to the mandetory engine lay-out but due to the lack of rev's. Most F1 fans are not engineers, that's an understatment. The 'old' fans who came to the track to feel the sound left. They are more than repaced by the new DtS fans. Those fans are more intrerested in the human iterest stories.

I feel the noise of each engine generation has its own character that makes them unique. The engines of the 80s and 90s were very mechanical, the V10s of the early 2000s were all about the shrill and wail, the V8s that came afterwards were like a mix of both, then our current V6 turbos roar and bellow. Maybe because I've only been following F1 since 2020, but I love the current noise and found the early 2000s V10s that everyone loves, too much for me. The 2010s V8s is where its at for me, not so high-pitched, still visceral and I can hear the machine working.

My dad and I sat at the pit straight in 2004 and the sound of 20 peak- era V10's felt like it would open up a portal to another dimension... I've heard the new turbo V6 hybrids, albeit the early versions, when I worked at the British GP in 2015 in one of the burger vans, and yeah the difference in sound was quite something, it was like someone had put the cars on 30% volume.

I wouldn't say the engines today are much better. They still sound muffled compared to the heydays of the V8 and V10 and while both the sound and car aesthetics have improved, they are *massive* at the moment and make fast-paced racing like in the 2000s pretty much impossible. These are good steps forward, but I grew up with the V10 sounds and nothing will ever stop me from wanting _those_ back.

The thing is, these V6 Turbo Hybrids have never reached High RPM levels, like a minimum of 18K RPM just like that V8s and V10s did. Which is what I think is the reason why they sound so horrible. I never heard a V6 rev up to more than 18K RPM even once, for now these Audio-edited videos on KZfaq are the closest thing that we can have to a 18K RPM-reving V6 If F1 truly wants to be "Environmental" and wants to promote a technologically advanced small displacement engine that bad down to our throats, then they should atleast give us a 5-Cylinder or a 4-Cylinder engine, as those engines have similar firing order to to the likes of V10 *(5 Cylinder; Inline 5, or V5)* and V8 *(4 Cylinder; Inline 4, V4, or Flat-4)* while also retaining that minimum rev limit of 18K RPM

F1's probably the largest it's ever been in terms of fanbase, but the on-track product isn't necessarily great and hasn't been for most years in the hybrid-era. If you want to capitalise on this newfound fanbase... the sport needs to be exciting, part of that is the looks, another part of it is the sound, and the most important one is the competitiveness of the teams. 2023 needs to be a good year for F1.

I've never experienced any F1 live on track, but having followed raced on TV since I was very young, and having watched some comparisons, I personally (and I mean PERSONALLY) don't get what is this noise thing about. Engines at the time of Schumacher, Massa or Raikkonen were loud, but the engine noise was too high pitched. To me watching and older F1 race is like trying to study or relax while a couple of very annoying mosquitos fly by your ear every time a car passes on the main straight. The sound of modern V6 engines is, to my hear, less obnoxiously loud and more substantial, richer on the lower end. And you said that one of the reasons people went to see it live was the sound, but when I take a look at videos taken from the crowd in Melbourne 2014 I see a lot of people with hearing protections. Praising the V10 engines for their loud noise is like saying that the concert was great because the volume of the music was so high that you got whining ears for two days after it. When I listen to music, I don't want it obnoxiously loud, just high enough that you feel it very well, but I want to appreciate all the tones and the timbres. PS: If you want more high pitched stuff, listen to electric car racing, like Formula E or rally stuff. Those "hairdryer" engines DO scream a lot for having no explosions in them

Everyone that i brought with me was at their first race and when the cars came out they all thought i was playing a joke on them, telling them to bring ear protection, or i was overly dramatic.

I relate to this at many levels, i go to car events all the time just to hear the sound, i go to wrc rally in my country and some hill climb and drift events all the time and the sound is a BIG reason for you to go, hill climb for example is pretty boring to watch live because you only see one or maybe 2 corners of the track, the cars come at 100-200 kmph and you only see them for a few seconds and its just 1 car at a time but one of the big reasons why we go is to hear the sound, that sound, those NA 4 cyl and 6cyl and v8s and even v12, the turbo sounds of those 800hp+ monsters that shit is fire.... man those v8 judd engines... they are amazing to hear, its a big part of the experience hearing all those different sounds from the cars. Imagine drifting with electric cars, that would be so lameeeeee, we want those jdm stutu sounds man its part of the culture

I agree with you mate. I remember when I was in High School (2014). Me and some friends were planning to go to WRC in Guanajuato City. One of my fellows wasn't very exited about the plan (until that moment, he had never experienced a motorsport race), so we decided to take him by force xd. We needed to save our place in a little "cerro" paved with edgy rocks (an uncomfortable place to sit). One of the arguments of him was "OMG it will be sooo boooring, just watching cars for a couple of seconds does not outweigh the time that we have to wait for that". My man, I will never forget his face when the Fiesta WRC run near us. He just turned his face to me and with a big smile said "They sound so LOUD". That was one of the best days in my life. I just can't imagine an EV bringing that emotion to the show.

I was there on that day, my first F1 event. I got free tickets thanks to my tafe course. Our teacher warned us that it would be really loud, I knew the new sound was gonna be different but not like this! If you were wondering around the track, you could barely even hear the cars! The highlight of my day was seeing a 2011 Red Bull do a few laps for the speed comparison. Every time that screaming V8 went past, it felt like someone was drilling into my ear. I brought headphones expecting it to be that loud all day, and I would have worn them if it was V8’s or V10’s. I remember Martin Brundle saying on race day, that he didn’t mind the tone but it was just too quiet. I agree with him, and I’m glad the V6’s have got a bit of sound to them now. I always talk to my mates about the loud V8’s and V10’s and they’re just not interested. Themselves, and possibly other Netflix era fans, just don’t understand or care about the iconic F1 sound we’ve lost.

For me F1 and the screaming cars go hand in hand. I was at Hockenheim in 2003 when I was a kid, and I remember how I could "survive" qualifiying only while sticking my fingers in the ear, because it was soooo damn loud. One time a Renault caught me unprepared and I will never forget this sound. F1 is about going to the limit. And the screaming sound is part of that. You can hear the limit of V10 cars when they bang down the straight of indianapolis or the long straights of the old Hockenheim layout. So... I understand totally what you say. Yes I still like F1, but if I had the chance to change many things to make it more like back in the days, I would do so

You visually observe speed, however you FEEL the vibration and the noise of a screaming V12/V10/V8 pierce through to your core. It's like going to a top fuel dragster event, the cars run 4 second quarter miles, but the way they do it, is something you NEVER forget. In my opinion, modern Formula 1 as a technical spectacle is amazing (W11 for example), but it is without a soul these days.

Once I played automation, build a 1.6l v6 engine with massive turbos on it and you won't hear an engine there. You thought 2014 f1 was a vacuum cleaner? Well, you haven't heard of this little engine. *You literally have a vacuum cleaner for an engine!* The more toned-down version was a jet engine and another v6 I made was a 2014 F1 sound And don't expect too much power from it since it only makes 456 hp for the wild and 404 for the toned down Oh and it has 8,5 km/l and 10,5 km/l fuel efficiency with ron 90-ish fuel

I don't know if the fact that I only started watching F1 comparatively recently (well after 2014) has something to do with it, but - I don't care about the sound. And to me it has always been as much about the Innovation as it has been about racing. I don't even care as much which driver wins as I care about which team does - and to me the best winners are those teams that find a way with the rules that is unexpected and brave. Maybe that's just me tho. And even if we one day had to witness an F1 car with an i4 engine (which tbh is the most dreadfully sounding engine for cars in existence) if those technical wizards in their teams manage to create their 1000hp beasts, I'll be as amazed as ever. As long as there's innovation the soul of F1 is not truly lost to me.

I felt the same way about IndyCar here in the states when they went from the Honda V8’s to the twin turbo V6’s. Although the IndyCar V6 sounded better than the F1 V6 in 2014, it wasn’t the same watching the Indianapolis 500 without those screaming V8’s, or even going back to the 90’s with some absolutely insane V8’s, V10’s, and V12’s. I’ve seen very few people talk about this, but I think it would improve the cars sound. All of the engines sound is funneled through one exhaust pipe, so my idea would be to bring back dual exhaust pipes, and that could hopefully improve the engine sound. And along with that, bring back the 2011 style blown diffuser, by purposely creating a loophole in the regs for it to happen. That’s just my two cents so your feed back is welcome

@@lRedKill3r I think they did just the opposite. They wanted cheaper and easier engines. F1 engine suppliers abandoned F1 due the 2008 financial crisis, and 2014 regulations made It imposible them to return because they were expensive and complicated to built. With more variety of engines, racing would be much better. That's why I think 2008 was the last true F1 season. The only ones who wanted those regulations were Mercedes, who were working on them since 2007. Maybe ecological engines would be nice publicity for some of them (not Ferrari) but not the main goal to stay in F1. Hybrid Era is such a nonsense if you think about it. I remember I was heavily disappointed with the V6 sound. I couldn't believe my ears. Then when I attended to my first F1 race it became so clear that it is different like never before. I've been to touring car and truck races several times before, and the sound was massive. Even at WTCR where they use I4 engines it was still loud. But then F1 was just "okay". I was hoping that at least the volume would be close, but not even that. Before the V6s, you couldn't hear the gearbox, which now you can, because the engine is so quiet. In fact when the car hits a curb is even louder than the engine sound itself. By the time I accepted it, and I'm happy that the popularity of F1 is rising again, but somehow deep inside I'm still disappointed.
