That’s exactly what happened to the former tennis legend, Lleyton Hewitt, when he played the great Roger Federer.
Prime Roger Federer was just something else, he gave the Australian no chance whatsoever. The Swiss genuinely made everyone feel bad for Hewitt when he DOUBLE Bagelled him in a stadium packed with nearly 24000 people.
A performance that will never be repeated by any tennis player in history.

Federer's career from beginning to end will forever be the most special moment in time in tennis history. So much success from beginning to end with the most beautiful tennis game. Broke so many records, created new records, dominated for generations, inspired generations, and ushered in the golden era of tennis. Every member of the big three are tennis legends and GOATs but Federer is the only one who I would consider a sporting icon.

Djokovic may have broken most of his records, but Federer is the only one alongside Nadal to be the face of the sport. Even today everyone thinks of Federer or Nadal first when talking about tennis.

@@anonusniogsonisrgnip titles and stats aren’t the only measure of greatness. Michael Jordan is the GOAT and he doesn’t have the most points scored in a game. Kobe and Wilt Chamberlain scored more. Jordan only won 6 NBA titles, Chamberlain won 11. Jordan wasn’t even the #1 pick in the draft. It’s that special “IT” that Jordan and Federer have. You know it when you see it. Djokovic is great in other ways - unbelievable competitiveness, longevity, focus, and instincts. But his game isn’t exactly imaginative.

People (Federer haters) call this a weak era, but back then Hewitt was considered a wonderkid, who was holding his own against Sampras and Agassi. It was Federer who then made Hewitt look weak

Hewitt looks bad compared to Federer, but we also need to remember that winning a GS twice puts him in the top ~50 men of all time. Only 58 people have won a GS in the open era - we can't forget that.

Agassi,Sampras,Rafter, Henman,Safrin,Hewitt, Roddick,and a few others were all top notch players. If any were still around they would be top 10. Once Federer got to know their game he shut them down. Forcing them to retire. For anyone to say it was a weak era is wrong. Once those greats realized they could not win any majors without going through Federer they quit trying. Roger was so dominant he made the competition look weak. Even Djokovic. His one nemesis was the left handed Spaniard Rafa Nadal.

I waited up to watch this game. We woke up the entire household & our neighbors besides because we were cheering like crazy. We thought surely Rusty would take the second set but one can imagine the euphoria when Roger pocketed the 2nd set and the third was an emphatic "I am the boss" moment. Thank you for showcasing this match. I must say Roger said his most memorable match was also a double bagel one. He lost to a kid named Reto Schmidli when he was just 10. Imagine the great Roger Federer telling the world about that!!

Wow at these early tennis days, the faster court suited Roger game perfectly. When they slowed the court down, it also cripple a lot of player ability to come to the net effectively. This Fed on the faster court was unbeatable.

😁 Federer literally couldn't even get past a slam 1/4 final at Wimbledon UNTIL THEY SLOWED IT DOWN. (one grass blend surface change only after the 2001 final). No surface change at the US Open between 1978 and 2020.

Djokovic has more records but nobody has reached peaks like Federer. His 2006 season and his 2007 win at the AO (no sets dropped) are other examples among many. he could reach the highest levels in Tennis.

He wasn't great on a slow court, but on a fast court the guy had great shot placement, solid service, good volley, tactically very smart, was the fastest guy on the tour until Nadal showed up, mentally very strong and a fierce killer instinct. Later on the courts slowed down and a hip surgery in 2008 ended up severing his career greatly.

Hewitt had a great baseline game and he wasn't afraid to come up to the net. His footwork was also above average. He doesn't look that good by today's standards because Nadal popularized the monster power groundstroke game but Hewitt was a good placement oriented baseliner.

I remember this game, i stayed up at night to watch it and i just hoped it would be a match at all, in that moment of time federer was so much better than anyone else that i had a doubt he would become a boring winner of everything. Some people say it was a weak era and it probably was to an extent...but maybe he was simply so much better than everyone else and its all his merit. I've never seen anyone apparently as unbeatable as he was ever since...

Federer is not a machine, so he had bad days and aged like everyone, so he was beatable, but less so. However, he has a place of his own in the history of tennis because he played the game so much better than anyone else, win or lose, and that accomplishment---which cannot be quantified--earns him a place of his own in the history of tennis.

@@huzcer What about the other 27 slam finals he reached? The 2011-23 period has been so weak, that for a big chunk of it , a well-past-his-peak Federer was one of Djokovic's 2 main rivals! When Federer was 29, he'd have been delighted to have faced any 35-year-old in a major final.

@@milesnicholas5973 if you actually are interested in this there was a data based study done "rating the difficulty of the big 3 slam wins" using full draw opponent strength analysis. It was done by an actual Federer fan this year. Djokovic's collection of slams came out as the hardest. When you think that 17 of his slams won he had to beat at least one of Federer, Nadal or Murray in the semifinal or final you would know that Federer doesn't remotely have the same pedigree in his slams. Add in beating the favourite Alcaraz in the semi this year in paris and hard court expert Medvedev you have 20.

Hewitt is the same age as Federer. He won 30 tournaments, officially retired in 2016, but only won four tournaments after 2007. Marat Safin is also the same age. He retired in 2012. Andy Roddick is a year younger than Federer, he won 30 tournaments and retired in 2012. Federers greatest accomplishment is his ability to adapt. All of these guys were great players, but they just couldnt deal with the slowing down of the courts. Federer won Wimbledon when it was still the era of the great serve and volleyers. He won Paris during Rafas reign of terror. Yeah, Novak has all the records now, but he didnt have to compete in basically two eras, only in the era of similar surfaces, if you want to call it that. Roger being able to stay relevant late in his 30ies when his big rivals from the youth all had retired 10 years ago, is just truly outstanding.

You can't compare Djokovic's boring game to Federer's. Federer had much more depth and variety to his game. Djokocvic did not have the ability to make many of those shots that Federer made in the match against Hewitt and many other players. Federer's volleys, drop shots, angles were incredible.

@@miloraddjurdjic1695 Isn't it funny how, on quick courts, Federer (six years older!) was still able to beat Djokovic after 2011 (and could occasionally win on slower, eg, Roland Garros, 2011 semi-final)? The slowing of the court surfaces favoured Djokovic (and Nadal) enormously. There's a place for slow courts (and for the athleticism that defensive players need to excel on them), but too many have made the game less exciting. And Federer was never as good after contracting glandular fever (mono) in 2008 - that's the illness that brought a premature end to the careers of Ancic and Soderling and so it shouldn't be discounted. Because of mono, the world never saw peak Federer.

The was when Federer came into the scene way ahead of the meta. Hewitt unfortunately, was one of Federer's early victims. He was made an example of. Defeating subsequent foes in similar crushing fashion put the entire league on notice, forcing players to adapt and catch up to the meta Rodger set.

He never double bageled Agassi that I know of. The key to beating Roger would have been to go to his backhand and volley when appropriate. Also make sure you win your serve.

Why do people say Roger won in a weak era, but never say Rafa won French Opens in weak clay court era? This is pure bias. There are no weak eras in sports. Every win is earned, and those who demean the great legends have probably never done anything in life.

Losing 6, 1 and 1 to Lleyton Hewitt in a US Open final shows how weak Sampras' generation was. Put Fed, Nadal and Djoker in the same era and he would have ended up with 1 or 2 slams at best.

Lol no. Those 2 are so reliant on the baseline & modern day string technology to generate heavy topspin. Put them on fast surfaces that require good serves & good volleying, it ain’t happening. Nadal’s got the volleys but not a good serve. Djokovic’s got a good serve but his net game is embarrassing.

That's NOT a double bagel; 6-0, 7-6, 6-0 is a bagel sandwich. D-bagel is 6-0, 6-0 consecutive sets--it only has meaning in WTA tennis since it amounts to a near-flawless victory. Equivalent in men's tennis is a triple bagel, 6-0, 6-0, 6-0 like Stefan Edberg vs. Stefan Eriksson 1987 Wimbledon 1st round

NIEMAND, unabhängig von Rekorden, hat diese Ausstrahlung. Bei ihm sah es immer so leicht aus. Als hätte er den Tennissport erfunden. Nur Rafa kommt ihm nahe. Sind beide ja auch Freunde. Ein Djokovic mag noch so viele Rekorde brechen; er kommt NIE an Roger heran. Beim Serben kommen auch immer wieder Gerüchte bezüglich seiner Nichtverletzungen auf.

Federer had it harder , initially came through during peak Sampras Agassi era, also had Carlos Moya, Michael Chang, Richard Kryjcek.... Mark Philippouuses ... then Nadal Djoko and Murray. If people think Djoko is better think again...

Well 2003-2007 is inarguably the weakest era in Tennis when Federer dominated to beat many unseeded players to win his titles like Baghdatis, Gonzalez, Philopoussis etc. All the three mentioned players were not even in top 30 which reduced the competition to a complete joke then. Then Federer beat a 36 year old Agassi at US Open in 2005 who was in the tail end of his career and on the verge of retirement; Agassi was not even in top 25 then. He beat an erratic Safin in 2004 Australian open who was not even in top ten then. Hewitt was his next scalp in Australian open 2005 and he was well past his best and the only slam final he made in Federer's era. His other opponent in some slam finals was Roddick who was a top 5 player but Federer's bunny with a lop sided H2H 21-3. That a clay court specialist like Nadal was able to make consecutively the finals of Wimbledon in 2006 and 2007 shows the level of competition then. Federer struggled to beat Nadal even in 2007; he could have easily lost that match as he won two sets only by tie breaks. This was the match where he infamously shrieked to switch off the hawk eye machine. Then Nadal by wallloping Federer in Roland Garros, clay court Masters and even some hard court tournaments regularly gradually gained confidence and evolved to become an all court player. He gained a mental edge by beating Federer repeatedly. This acquired the proportion of a mental block in due course that Federer lost the match to Nadal before he even stepped to the court. Both Novak and Andy became profesionals only in 2005 and were teens in this weakest era of tennis. Even Andy had the measure of Federer and beat him repeatedly in many master series tournaments. Between 2003-2007, Federer won a total of 12 slams most of them competing against weakest players except for Nadal in Roland Garros and Novak in 2007 US open who was just 19 then but ranked in top 5. In 2008 the decline of Federer started and he wás bludgeoned by Novak at Australian open in straight sets. Then at Roland Garros, he was hammered by Nadal in what was a complete humiliation. Federer then claimed that Wimbledon was his turf and thereto ate humble pie outplayed by Nadal. His only slam victory was US open against Andy. In 2009 Australian open Federer easily beat his bunny Roddick, had an extra day off, but still lost to Nadal in five sets who had the earlier day had a marathon match against Verdasco which went over five and half hours. At Roland Garros, an unseeded Soderling, shocked Nadal in the fourth round and opened up the draw. Federer should thank him for enabling to win this title at least once. At Wimbledon, Nadal never participated and Federer beat Roddick by fluke and on the verge of defeat losing the first set 6-3 and down 2-6 in second set tie break. He then performed a Houdini act to scrape through and finally won the marathon 16-14 in the fifth set. In 2010 Australian open he beat Andy a top 5 player. That was the only grand slam he won that year. 2011 was the dawn of Novak era and Federer paled into insignificance. 2012 Wimbledon was his another slam beating Andy and then he went into a shell. Between 2013-2016 Federer failed to win a single grand slam. Then in 2017 after a back surgery and recuperation which coincided with Nadal's lay off today Federer won Australian open beating Nadal - leveraging the slump of Novak due to elbow issues. He again beat an unseeded injured Cilic at Wimbledon 2017 and then at 2018 Australian open. That ended his grand slam story. Federer trails 16-24 against Nadal and 23-27 against Novak. Till 2016, Federer was a more humiliating 10-23 against Nadal. It was only between 2017-2019, he beat Nadal six times. He trails Nadal 1-3 in Australian open and 0-7 in Roland Garros. Even in hard courts, he is just 11-9 with most of his wins in indoor hard courts. Against Novak, Federer trails 1-4 in Australian open and 1-3 in Wimbledon (losing all finals). It is 3-all in US open and 1-all in Roland Garros. It is Novak who has beat top seeded players to win most of his grand slam titles. Out of 24 grand slams, he beat Nadal 4 times, Federer 4 times, Andy 6 times. His other opponents were Tsonga - top 10 player Theim, grand slam champion and top 5 player in Australian open Anderson in 2018 Wimbledon who was fourth seeded then. Novak beat Nadal in semi finals. Delpotro - top five player Berretini - 4th seeded at Wimbledon Ruud - 2nd seeded at Roland Garros (he beat Alcaraz in semis) Tstispas in Roland Garros and Australian open who was in top 5 then Meddy twice at Australian open and US open - top 3 player then. Kyrgois is the only unseeded player he beat at Wimbledon. So this proves conclusively that Novak beat quality players to win most of his grand slams and busts the weak era theory. Novak is dominating the next generation at 36 in the tail end of his career which has never happened in tennis. Unlike Federer, Novak has a better H2H against all his key rivals. It is a sheer waste of time to even compare records as there is no contest. I challenge any Federer fanatic to counter this with logic and statistics. All they will do is to bring up subjectives like peak/prime blah blah. 😂😂😂😂😂

Federer's quality of opponents in the finals of his grand slam victories were the lowest, whereas Novak in comparison is the highest who beat mostly top 5 seeds to win majority of his titles. Federer beat many players outside top ten in finals to win his grand slam titles.

If you claim that they were all lowest-ranked players, then on their way to finals they should have beaten some higher-ranked players. Right? Please produce a record of who they beat before they came to the finals. Or was it that most of the higher-ranked players were in Roger's draw? Statistics is usually a wretched tool in some people's hands.
