One significant event in Larry's life as to why he quit Indiana and Bobby Knight. First, he was in an environment that was to large. His hometown of French Lick had 2,000 population. Larry had been very quiet and was teased for not speaking up. Then he reached that gangly, body type before reaching six feet, nine inches. There were six siblings and they were very poor. His father was his best friend. Most did odd jobs around the neighborhood and helped the family. Larry *idolized* his father who did father/son activities with him like fishing and watched and encouraged his ball playing. He practiced with him on basketball courts. But his dad was also an alcoholic. They tinkered with small motors and repaired lawn mowers, etc. His parents were broken up and his mother by then had to work two jobs to help get food on the table. His dad had a very spotty child support going on. Many don't know why Bird went to French Lick after quitting college and I've never seen it mentioned. Larry got a phone call from his mom to tell him that his dad was dead. He had been drunk and called her saying he was a worthless husband and father who couldn't support his children. Sometimes the typical talk of you'd be better w/o me. Her words to change his mind didn't work. He hung up and shot himself in the head. Larry's world was now confused and he just felt he needed to go home. He even drove a garbage truck to get money for his mom. When it was time to go back it sure wasn't going to a large Indiana team. And the legend started. In order to appreciate Larry's talent one must realize the GREAT NUMBER OF HOURS that Bird practiced. He would mark out every angle down to the three point lane and land baskets. Or kept trying. Teammates were sometimes stunned after a loss, Bird would go out and see what the area was, zone, pivot and make the basket with He also said "I'm not paid to play up until the five minutes of the game. I'm paid for one second left in the game."

Growing up in Kansas during the 1990s the Utah Jazz became my favorite team because Greg Ostertag, who played for the University of Kansas, was drafted as a center. I HATED the bulls in the 90s and now look on those days and team fondly. Such a fun era of basketball. My second favorite player in that era was Penny Hardaway.

Who is this young Bird historian?!! Well done!!--he is the GOAT! I believe the legend behind the reason why Bird used his left hand is that he had hit a guy out back of the bar one night in Boston. He was sticking up for a friend who got into it with some guy and Bird went out back to fight him. He hit him (I think he dropped the guy with one punch) and messed his wrist up for a little while--TRUE story. I think he may have had a broken hand at another point in his career and both times he played through the pain. He has played with broken hand, broken eye-orbital bone, broken vertebrae in his back, bone spurs in both ankles, achilles tendonitis in both ankles, and herniated disc. Check out his near quadruple-double (30pt-12reb-10ast-9stl-2blk game) in 31 minutes at Utah in 1985!

Alright someone in the comment section pointed out that it was Danny Ainge who got stripped of the ball, not Mchale. Also, some clips I showed were of Larry Bird using his right hand because they were less blurry than others with his left. That's my b I'll try not to make mistakes like that in the future. Anyway have a great day and enjoy the video!!!

Nice job on the video. I will add that Larry said he would play 3/4 with his left hand - except for jump shots, and this sometimes makes people think it was exaggerated or only half true, but this part using the bill walton clip is often misquoted or they cut off his comment before he was finished. Still nice job on the video-!.

I'm ready to concede that Bird is left handed. I'm just tiered of arguing about it. Now what that means is Bird did not score 27 with his off hand. In fact that would mean he scored 60 with his off hand. That all by itself makes him the greatest of all time.
