I felt relieved for him when he died. His injury was so horrific that even the most positive mind set couldn't have survived weeks of bed rest, numerous bladder infections, never being alone, having no feeling in his body or ability to move anything. It makes me feel claustrophobic and terrified just thinking about it. An active young man forced to watch people do all the things he can never do again, even breathing on his own. He was immensely brave and dealt with cards he had amazingly well but I'm glad he had a swift way out of what amounts to a living hell. If there's a heaven he will surely be up there doing all the things we couldn't do on earth.

idk how to feel about this comment, we only have one life and that's it.... when you're gone, it's forever. That being said, i understand the sentiment though i'm not entirely sure it's a message that should be sent and especially because there are likely many people that will read comment like this that are in the thick of it and maybe even going through what Stuart was going through.

All the people saying that the girlfriend was awful for leaving really need to get a grip on reality. They weren’t married and they were both young party kids. He would likely have done the same. I’m sure it didn’t feel good for either one at the time but she was right to leave. She realized early that she couldn’t handle the stress and responsibility of a severely disabled partner and was honest.

exactly...and they're ignoring the fact that they probably would have ended up eventually splitting even if he hadn't had the accident. most people these days do not end up with the person they were with when they were 21

I'm sure they both had their reasons. It's not up to us to judge because we don't know the whole situation. We only know the info we are given in the video. There's a lot we don't know. I'm also thinking that Stuart was smart enough to understand the severity of his injuries & the high risk of death from infections. Something I'm almost sure was on his mind when he made the decision to let her go. It's always horrible when a spouse leaves. You've already established that person as your life partner. Someone who vowed to be there for you & support you no matter what. Someone you trusted. To just leave you when you're suffering the most. That's an entirely different situation. To mutually agree to go their separate ways is a much better situation. It still sucks but at least she didn't just up & leave him on bad terms. They came to a mutual agreement. It's disrespectful to Stuart to judge her for something he made very clear in the video was his decision. I don't think he would want that. That's probably why he made the point to say it was his decision. So ppl wouldn't do that.

I have a spinal cord injury and have been wheelchair bound since I was 27. Initially I thought life was over and even considered suicide for a short time but luckily my life is now better at the age of 43 than at any other time. I’ve since been diagnosed with arthritis (caused by years of pushing a manual chair) but I don’t let that stop me either. You learn to appreciate things differently when you mature and I now see what happened to me as a blessing. I’ve met some of the most incredible people as a result and had some amazing opportunities. I feel like an 18 year old in my mind and know life will be more challenging in the future but that’s the same for all of us. I have a big electric wheelchair that looks intimidating but for me it’s just a means of getting about. I also drive an adapted van and am fully independent both in travel and at home. Luckily I’ve been blessed with supportive friends and family and I have a sense of humour that I use to my advantage. Life is full of ups and downs it’s what you do with these situations that makes you who you are. Spinal cord injury can happen to anyone, anytime and anywhere.

I think most commenters focus too much on girlfriend and not on Stuart. The video was his story never hers. As member of an injury and illness support group most of member had same thing happen as did Stuart. They all told us almost the same sentence. My wife or girlfriend could not handle me being hurt i guess i gotta find somebody now. Many were married and had chidren. Stuarts girlfriend was young and they had no children and i am sure all those women did think at one time they were in love. It broke my heart to always hear it happen to someone but we can not judge just support or friend. That is all anyone can do is listen so they know you care.

I agree totally, brilliant documentary. It's one of those situations you could never imagine yourself going through, until it happens to you. And believe me your options are very limited, your options are very different because you're Paralyzed, and now disabled. Stuart personality and determination, gave him the ability to take back some control over his environment which improved is quality of life. However small most certainly gave him a lot of satisfaction in a way himself , and many others including myself have taken for granted. It just means doing things in a different way. One can only wish steward a joyful life, and may he continue to improve his independence. Truly a super Guy, who's got a lot to give, may he truly find happiness forever and always. 💕

I’ve had a tough time watching this documentary. There are no rules for this sort of thing as regards how it changes many lives. A lot of people mean well at the beginning, but you can see over time, everyone involved changes, some for good some for bad. Stuart’s is one of the worst. The 24 hour care, with his life on the brink at all times. It’s mind blowing the affect on those most close to him. The parents, the family and friends. Humans are not super human. Their minds and bodies wear out in time, especially when pushed to these extremes of care giving. So, no one can judge at any level. No one should have a negative comment about anyone. This is not normal, it’s tragic. Not just Stuart but anyone whose lives are altered to such a degree. My son had a motorcycle accident almost 10 years ago. It has been life altering for us and not a day goes by that it is always in front of you. He is 32 now. His most severe injuries were internal. He can’t have children among other things, but he looks like nothing happened on the outside. But, he now feels socially awkward so here we are, a 32 year old young man, never had a real girl friend still at home. He’s a 1000 times better off than Stuart, but to him, his mind frame is not as good as Stuart’s. Bottom line, being disabled and denied the normal life you are usually born with is a real crapper. So treasure every day of your lives and be careful.

I don't understand , "what blanket statement?" We are experiencing in a same but different way as I said. It is a crapper to get cheated out of what should have been a normal life. Imagine these was almost a decade ago. With all the new technology by American companies like Apple and Amazon and international ones like Samsung this guy can control everything in his house via a voice app.. you can turn your shower on. The dryer on. You can voice Ameca to order you a pizza or even call the ambulance if you need one.. all this new technology I take for granted is what can make someone else's life much easier in other aspects..

I know this guy paralyzed from the neck down. He's not wealthy. The charity,Homes for Humanity built him a accessible home to live in and he gets caretakers coming in daily to take care of his needs through the government. Needless to say, he lives a poor quality of life and my heart goes out to him for persevering. He was fortunate because a lot of people in his position end up in a nursing home.

Autonomicdysreflexia. I had a lover shot 4 times that was a quad. The legs are responsible for controlling BP. It requires constant attention because it can be fatal. I have to say I was a bit disappointed with the GF ducking out. If you love someone you don't just dash at the time they need you most. Terrible.

aretwo deetwo You MUST be joking!!! She was only his GIRLFRIEND, not his WIFE...how many MILLIONS of girlfriends and boyfriends break up????????? Why do you call her selfish??????? The POINT of only being a girlfriend and NOT MARRIED or ENGAGED is that you are GETTING TO KNOW THE OTHER PERSON and there is no guarantee that she loves him at that stage. You are a nasty person to say she was selfish. Do you tell all girlfriends and boyfriends that break up that they are selfish???? Did you marry your first girlfriend/boyfriend? If not, then YOU are selfish (according to you).
