Federer is beatable. He’s been beaten by many “talented” players with unbelievable “potential.” The biggest difference…his consistency to perform wonderfully at the highest levels.

Гулбис талантливый парень, помню, когда он только появился, показывал впечатляющие результаты, почти сходу дошёл до 1/4 на РГ, да в принципе парень вполне прилично смотрелся в матчах с большой тройкой! Проблема Гулбиса в том, что он как это часто бывает - при наличии большого таланта, сам по себе оболтус и лентяй, в совокупности с этим у него не было никакого постоянства, выдав 1 великолепный матч, он в следующем круге мог слить какому нибудь ноунейму и так почти вся карьера, к которой парень не серьёзно относился! Победа на Федерером не сделала парня каким то большим игроком, хотя показала потенциал того, что при его способностях и работоспособности он однозначно мог бы добиться большего, но по факту до конца свой талант латыш так и не реализовал, сейчас примерно из этого же разряда игроков можно выделить Кирьоса, тоже талантливый, но дурной!

Отношение к теннису не то было, согласен. Ну конечно и травмы, хотя, мог их избежать если правильно работал бы. У него реально был потенциал стать первой ракетой и выиграть хотя бы один большой шлем.

I saw him live at the Sydney international over 10 years ago. He won the match, but really struggled with his breathing at different times. I wondered if he was gluten intolerant like djokovic...

Any of the greats can be beaten by a one off moment by a player. But it is the consistency they lack. Chances are they beaten in the next round of tournaments.

It's all to do with SR- if your level is higher on that day, you will surprise your opponent, even if it's a Fed/Novak or Nadal.

its not only about consistency, it's also about the safety margin. Even the big three had their bad days. When you're way better than the rest of the pack like the big three, you can still on a bad day beat other players performing at their highest. Just not 100%. Tennis matches can tip one way or another depending on a ball in or out a couple inches, a gust of wind, etc

Ernests Gulbis & Dominic Thiem were both coached by Gunther Bresnik. I wasn't surprised by Gulbis game. More let down that he didn't live up to his potential. So many players that show real promise & potential. But talent without commitment won't get you to the top. You need to work to get results. It's not the intensity it's the consistency of your work ethic. Roger, Rafa, Nole..all workhorses.

@geemy9675 No actually. My sibling worked hard at being proficient in tennis. I know the struggle, the body not cooperating & non existent funding. When you have the talent to excel you should go for it. No regrets.

Applying "GOAT" to Gulbis for this one match is clickbait and disingenuous. In all honesty, Mr. Gulbis didn't really amass much success. He went out in the 1st, 2nd or 3rd round of basically every tournament he played in, with only a smattering of Quarter Final rounds and only 2 Semi-finals. Not to "knock" the guy of course ... to be a pro on the circuit and to survive and produce any significant results over years is VERY successful imo. This particular match against Federer was very exciting, but one can always expect the occasional "upset" over a top player.
