LOVE the Jesse Pinkman example. To expand on this, Jesse's reaction to his friend stomping on the bug is also very telling, as witnessed several times with the children he interacts with.

i'm afraid that is lost on me. Could it be a strictly US cultural reference? All I know is that he was hit by students playing drag when they shouldn't have been.

The make of the car is called a Dodge. The word "dodge" means to "get out of the way" or "avoid being hit" --- So if one is hit by a Dodge there's a silly little bit of oxymoronic irony.

@stephenkingbookclub1054 Not bad. One moment that will haunt me is when John touches an item of clothing that was on someone who drowned in quicksand. King is a genius at taking the reader towards moments that you should avoid, but secretly want to enjoy.

As a book purist in 1979, 12 year old me hated Nadlers Barlow. I much preferred Richard Lynch ( who would have made a GREAT book Barlow) in 1979s tv movie Vampire, which you can check out on KZfaq for free. Pretty sure it was create to directly compete with Salems Lot or cash in on its success. Its a terrific movie.

Came back after re-reading 'The Dead Zone' for the first time in around eight years. Still holds up great. I actually really like Johnny as a character despite his Wonder Bread name. He's kind, patient, with a good moral compass and an even better sense of humor. And Stillson, like a lot of Stephen King villains, is absolutely vile. From the moment he killed that poor dog, I wanted him scalped. The story is still really good, and while the politics mentioned before the climax could get tiresome for someone like me (i.e. someone who couldn't be less interested in politics if they tried), I understand the necessity of it. Politics plays a role in the climax, and this world's potential future. So, it fits. I also like how King handles the cliche of a 'gift' actually being a 'curse'. Not only is it physically dangerous, but almost none of Johnny's good deeds go unpunished. He warns his physical therapist about her kitchen being on fire, and she proceeds to keep her distance. He warns his pupil not to go to the graduation party because there will be a fire, and he tries to warn other students as well, and when it happens he is blamed for it. He helps find the Castle Rock Strangler, and the controversial story gets him fired. My only complaint is the love interest, Sarah. She was just kind of bland. So, that's my two cents. Still a great read, but I think it could've benefited from a more interesting romantic lead.

I haven't read this story yet but I figured there wasn't much harm in getting early spoilers that weren't given away in the movie version. This ands more dread knowing what Stillson did as a young man.

I always get more upset about the violence towards animals in Stephen King's book than anything else. I figured he includes those awful snippets because he knows people like me exist and he wants to cover every horror possible.
