"Artificial Intelligence" mushroom foraging apps are one thing, but more recently it appears the robots are now writing mushroom foraging guidebooks. Aspiring mushroom foragers may now have to deal with guide books that have fake author profiles, fake images, and fake, potentially dangerous, identification information. In this episode of The Mushroom Show, we're exploring the brave new frontier of AI and it's impact on the world of mushrooms. We're also digging into a new study that is building the foundation for psilocybin therapy, and have an interview with Drew Ames, a film-maker creating a brand new documentary called Life of A Mushroom: Picked, Prepped and Eaten".

I guess I just want somewhere to share my story. When I was 19 I took shrooms, and it was like I was turned inside out. As a child, I was very extroverted and loved being around people. And after the shrooms, I felt disconnected from everyone and everything around me. I just wanted to alone. I am learning to feel happiness from within myself, not running from myself. It's been a LONG and PAINFUL process but once it's healed, it's healed and beautiful.

Its like that...people just stress me tf out. one time i did shrooms (my first n only time but i had done acid before) and i started to notice how badly my friends treated me and i saw how we interracted with each other more clearly, and it really opened my eyes.

@@kiramatt6152I can relate to that. It definitely was the beginning of the end for me too. But the ending of something less real, so I'm ok with it. Just took a lot of adjusting and I can't bring others with me like I tried to at first.

The mushroom ID apps are very hit or miss. I took a photo of the wine caps I was growing in my garden, which I knew were wine caps since _I planted them there myself,_ and the app got completely confused. Wine caps weren't even on the list of possibilities it showed me.

Interesting! Yes, I think it's just a very difficult problem to solve, hard to do from just a picture- so much more nuance required!

I'll take a guess that it gave you a list of possible Russulas, right? The app may be regionally specific. For instance if it's geared toward the temperate forests along the west-coast of North America, then you shouldn't expect wine caps to be in there, as they're naturally found in the hardwood forests along the east side of the continent.

Yeah they definitely get them wrong often, but I find they’re good when I have no idea what something is. I just use it to get an idea of what it could be, and then do an hour or more of research to determine whether or not it’s identified correctly. I never use the app as solid identification, just to get potential leads. Sometimes it’ll get it right the first time which is nice. Sometimes I’ll end up on Reddit for leads.

There are just too many details that we need to know, to trust apps. There are lots of plant apps out there and those frequently don’t get it even close to right. There’s no way I’m going to trust one to identify a mushroom, let alone a mushroom I’m thinking of eating.

Do the facilitators of these studies have PERSONAL experience with psychedelics? Do these therapists go to therapy? I understand folks need help but these therapists could potentially do more damage if they don't have working knowledge of the medicine they're utilizing. Rachel Harris, PhD, spoke of these things both on the MycoGeeky podcast, a couple weeks ago, and in her book Swimming in the Sacred.

@@cjboyo A little digging on this and the first episode is what you're after? Yes, women, especially, have to be careful when seeking psilocybin assisted therapy (or a retreat with a "shaman"). Men (most often), for some dumb reason, can't keep their hands to themselves. This is not an excuse for us men to continue such behavior. (Like "oh she had it coming," or "well if she wasn't dressed so provocatively" - self control my dude) We call this rape. As if being sexually assaulted wasn't damaging enough to the psyche!

25mg is not strong enough for most people by body weight. Perhaps if you've never had any experience with psychoactive drugs other than alcohol, caffeine and nicotine and you are exceptionally average weight and height and neurologically typical it could be the perfect dose. Most people don't fit that category especially people suffering from mental health issues and considering how safe larger doses are we really need that research! Anyone who has a lot of experience with psilocybin know that things really start to get interesting and truly profound at 50mg+. That usual clinical bullshit of giving someone just enough to function better within cultural norms, but not enough to see clearly that it's those usually unconscious cultural expectations which make people ill in the first place. Good example is shoes; people always winging about new shoes giving them blisters, but instead of complaining to the shoe providers that there's something seriously wrong with the shoes they go buy foot salves and blister plasters and allow their feet to become deformed, then they complain about having back ache and so it goes on! Once you see these insane behaviours clearly you can't go back!

I'm glad you at least added "in my opinion" because gatekeeping, patronising and hyperbole were and have been my primary experiences and pain in the arse in introduction to mycology and I've seen the same frustrating arguments against AI and even the crowd sourced apps and things like Google lens multiple times and have yet to see actually useful or constructive criticism, sadly, this applies to your comments too. Conversely in the wider foraging world there's concern and safety but far, far less hyperbole and gatekeeping and I'd argue you're way more likely to kill yourself with plants than fungi in general foraging, at least going by the the numbers. That is to say, safety and erring on the side of caution are absolutely sensible and important but discouraging use of google lens or plant net or whatever else that makes things easier BECAUSE they make things easier is just plain fear mongering or naive gatekeeping.

The mushroom ID apps are useful for people who have absolutely no clue about what they've photographed. It's not going to be correct 100% of the time, but it at least it provides a suggestion of what it could be, which then you can look up in a field guide for verification. If the app is wrong, the field guide will likely have a list of "look-alikes" which can then be investigated. The important take-way is that you NEED to retain the mushroom for proper inspection. You might have to dissect, or take a spore print to be certain.
