Beneath the waves, USS Albacore, with one of the most successful and daring American Submarine crews, stalked the Massive Taiho Japanese Carrier. It was the summer of 1944, and Japan believed they had one last shot at destroying the American Pacific fleet before the Imperial Japanese Navy was utterly overwhelmed. They had new, potent aircraft like the A6M Zero Model 52 and powerful, cutting-edge carriers that, if used decisively, could help turn the tables.
One of their aces in this long-shot gamble was the Taiho, an aircraft carrier unlike any other, equipped with a unique armored deck that made her near impervious to bombs, torpedoes, or shells. Commanding this ultimate flagship, Japan aimed to destroy the American Navy in the Battle of the Philippine Sea.
Taiho unleashed a swarm of warplanes into the skies as the battle erupted.
The Jewel of the Japanese Navy was within their grasp. It was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Just as Albacore aligned for a perfect hit, the unexpected happened: the submarine’s Torpedo Data Computer started giving false information.
Unable to accurately target Taiho, she was about to slip through Albacore’s fingers. Lieutenant Commander James W. Blanchard was not about to let that happen. Known for doing whatever it took to get the job done, he and his crew were ready to improvise. Blanchard ordered his men to fire a broad fan of six torpedoes, hoping at least one would find its mark…

The USS Albacore (SS-218) was lost at sea Nov. 7, 1944, after striking a mine. In February 2024, naval historians confirmed the World War II submarine's wreck site off the coast of Hokkaido, Japan.

Taiho's armored deck could defeat torpedoes? Yeah, no. Taiho's 75-80 mm armored deck could defeat shells? Maybe the moderate velocity shells from a destroyer's 5"/38 guns, but probably not a light cruiser's 6" shells, and not 8" heavy cruiser shells or battleships' much larger shells. Were I a Taiho sailor working in the hangar I would not like to experience the armored flight deck being tested by a USN armor-piercing bomb (which the USN did have in WW2). 3 inches of armor is not magic.

U do realize what he’s speaking about he didn’t pull out of his ass?? There’s multiple people doing research from all sources and cross references just cuz it’s 3 in doesn’t mean it can’t stop a torpedo just makes it harder
@petestorz172
@petestorz172 2 ай бұрын
Are you serious? The flight deck, which is what was armored, armored, is the top deck of a carrier. Torpedoes do not hit the decks of a ship, especially not the deck highest above the water. Torpedoes hit the side of a ship.
@skipgumphrey9579
@skipgumphrey9579 2 ай бұрын
Actually that’s only back then… modern torpedoes (and even some back in WWII) don’t “hit the side of the ship”. They go under the hull and explode. Water is displaced from under the hull of the target vessel and the keel snaps under the strain of the weight without the help of supporting water. Breaking the back of the target increases the likelihood of sinking said target rather than merely damaging it. Hope this helps ;)

That was the intent of the magnetic exploder in the WW2 (and before) vintage Mark 14 torpedo, which worked poorly or worse. But my actual point was that torpedoes are not going to be kitting the flight deck of an uncapsized aircraft carrier.

I couldn't serve in a sub. My Dad was a Canadian Gunnery officer who volunteered for Korea. They said yes, but he would have to go in a tank. He didn't like the closed space either. Luckily for me, he didn't go

You think theTaiho was unique in having an armored deck. Check your facts againagain Royal Navy Carriers had armored decks since the start of WW2, which later proved impervious to Kamekazi attack.

I've always wondered why, at least to my limited knowledge about the situation, why no one in the Navy's ordnance division was either courtmartialed or otherwise faced serious charges for "dereliction of duty, over the torpedo scandal. How many US soldiers and sailors were killed directly or indirectly by ships that should have been artificial reefs early in the war?

The Taiho wasn't "massive." It was a typical IJN first-line carrier. The Shanano on the other hand was massive! ALSO the US Navy didn't have 15 fleet carriers at the Battle of Philippine Sea. The US had only 7 first-line fleet carriers and 8 second-line light carriers.
