Imagine being a comissar assigned to The Death Korps. Suddenly, you are the least fanatical member of your entire regiment and your job now is to try to keep your charges from gleefully dying for The Emperor, possibly with you in tow.

Things are not like that in the novel the siege of Vraks, a commissar had to shoot a wounded troopers because the other wanted to help him instead of charging. A colonel ordered a withdraw in front of a demonic invasion etc. Fluff wise they are no longer the war machine they used to be.

Except they don’t. At least not as prominently as the fandom believes ! There’s not a single sentence in the lore that claims they use the shovel as their primary melee weapon. The bayonet is. The shovel is only used as a backup emergency weapon in all the canon we have, it’s just a meme otherwise.

The Death Korps do retreat. They do break morale and hoof it. In the series of books wherein the Krieg were fleshed out, they break and run many times.
