Currently in oregon sheet metal apprenticeship, currently taking architectural sheet metal. Our teacher won’t even show us what we need to learn. All we’re given is a smacna handbook on asm. Very frustrated, just found your channel to see if I could find what it’s about. I believe our apprenticeship is broken. Along with journeymen/apprentice knowledge is faltering.

Price of material is also the struggle in New Zealand. Being supplier and installer helps but the price factor is definitely making it competitive and hard to secure work. Wish you all the best mate love all the advice 🍻

For me the biggest barrier to growth is the price of the material. Everybody wants a metal roof until I tell them the price, then they suddenly no longer want a metal roof. I’m in south Louisiana, that’s how it is here, don’t know about the rest of the country.

The problem is, the young generation doesn't want to learn and work. Avg construction age 20 years ago was 33 I think. Now it's 43. A friend of mine that has bigger crew, flys to Croatia every year, and tries to convince ppl to come in for 6 months. He rents them a house and pays for their food. That's the only way for him to keep his business running. Im struggling to find and keep guys every year. Toronto area

It isn’t dying man. Local 18 Madison, WI Union architectural sheet metal worker here, work for Muza sheet metal, best company out there, we do everything from ACM panels, to metal roofs, to corrugated metal, gutter, everything. We are booming here. Complete opposite. The on site training, and apprenticeship program teach them everything they need. This is why unions are the best. Yeah they have their problems too, but at least we teach our own and be successful

What’s your ASMW apprenticeship look like?

@@asm101in the Union if you are in for 5 years I bet you only get 1 year of Architectural training, if that. When I went through my in local 104 Bay Area, CA we only did 2 separate 2 week long classes on it. Teachers didn’t even know how to do anything and I taught both classes as an apprentice because I was only one to have ever done it in field.

@@asm101 5 year apprenticeship. During that, first 2 years of paid day school, night classes(ranging to welding to first aid to refrigeration to testing and balancing, etc.) throughout entire apprenticeship which you get your money reimbursed through union, and on the job learning. Lots of nothing but ductwork companies, but a couple architectural companies. There’s actually more and more guys choosing the architectural side now than the ductwork side.

@@michaelsatterfield7944 true, they have a night school class for architectural, BUT there are a number of guys who are apprentices that only doing architectural and will never hang a piece of duct in their career. It goes both ways.

It’s crazy, how can our country have no certification for such a vital part of our economy. I’m a sider specializing in luxury infill homes. I do tonnes of aluminum trim work and some steel. I watch you ;and love what you’re doing. Same thing in our trade. Can’t find anybody with the experience to join and seam things smoothly. I can’t imagine the struggle you have to find people willing to be able to handle the layout and geometry of what you do. Great talk. How in the hell can the powers that be implement training and certification when they can’t even deal with a housing shortage. When people refer to residential building as Wild West they’re not to far off.

Agree 100% with you Alex, here in Canada there are way more work than people able/qualified experienced/knowledgeable to do it. Quantity is not quality.

I didn’t know Prefa sold products in the US. Another aluminum shingle I like and manufactured here in the US is “Permalock”. With the skyrocketing cost of steel, more of us roofers need to look at aluminum shingles as an alternative.

The unions are not what they used to be. You end up on job sites where 75% of the workers are illegals from some temp agency and nobody speaks English. Then when big jobs done you get laid off and wait around for weeks or months at a time for next big job. Sadly non Union is the way to get steady work year round these days.

We have that here too...but the program leans heavier into HVAC witrh very minimal covergae of the ASM trade. For example every school block, maaaaaayyyybbeee they touch on it in one or two classes thats it...they teach it because they have to but the teachers who are teaching are HVAC biased

are you speaking for residential and/or commercial. I feel for you, I did mostly upper scale cabinetry/carpentry and finding guys to do the highend work was hard, if not impossible. The turn over rate by either going somewhere else or they start their own business with/without a license(and try to steal my clients). I spent more time training and fixing their mistakes and I paid and treated them well so that wasn't the issue. Then add in that the customers want it the cheap way, and they are NOT open to learning the difference. -Brian BTW...no Red Seal requirements in the US.
