The debate of the life of reggae just keeps to be getting louder with some saying that reggae no longer belongs to Jamaicans and its popularity is on the decline. Equally on the other side you have proponents saying that reggae is alive and well and never in history has reggae been more popular than it is today.

I agree with Major Mackerel 100%. This is exactly the reason there's no substance in the music nowadays, no competition.

He's a legend and you're right, he's speaking the truth. I'm a white guy from the north west of England and even I can see it. Been listening to reggae, ragga, ska and toasting since I was 13 in 1983. Makes me sad. I've spent this evening watching early 80s soundsystems and enjoying every second. Sad it's been taken away from Jamaica.

Major Mackerel is one of the most talented artist ever come out of Jamaica. Major got a sound that no guy can copy, if they even try them will faint and die fe real. The copy every other dj but Mackerel and Papa San, Lt Stichie no artist can't copy them original and that what lack in the business lack of creativity and originality.

IMHO the death of reggae occurred when the era of the great studio bands passed ( roots radics, sly &robbie, studio one ). Once the drum machine and keyboard made the music cheaper to produce and thus more profitable for the vampires who always feasted upon it, it killed the organic soul of the sound. but maybe the bar was set too high for me. after I saw bob and the wailers in '79 at UCLA I never heard music of any genre in quite the same way.

sun rah 44 I totally agree! No more baseline, every voice auto tuned out and it’s gone downhill since then. I recall back in the day deejays from yaad had their own lingo but now it’s kind of like they’re trying to adapt too much hip hop lingo inna fi dem lyrics and it’s lost a lot of its identity that made dancehall so special!

I think most artist and student's of reggae music (and other musical genre ) should watch this and learn. Mr Mackeral is making essential key points in regards to the music business and dancehall artists unoriginal safe-nest. Unfortunately dancehall music is seen by USA and UK music insiders as being crude, cheap and novelty not to be taken serious. I don't think reggae is dead yet as there is a good revival of roots reggae in Europe.

I have been saying that there is nothing name dance hall music,I am older than major mackerel. The way I know where they called dance hall is a building with a door, Which you have to enter through. It is called a hall, a lawn is a place just surrounded with either bamboo,or coconut limbs. It is how the place is set up for the purpose,I was listening to Prince Buster, Derrick Morgan,Slim Smith,Alton Ellis, Desmond Decker, Larry Marshall,Justin Hinds, those guys from the 1962 up, then you have man like Bob Marley, Horace Handy,Toots& Maytals, John Holt, came after. Long time DJ like Majucka,King Stittch before uRoy,I Roy, Dennis Alcapone,Big Youth,I knew when these guys started their early career.Sound systems like King Tubbys,Sir Don,Sir Denmark, Coxen,Howell, Elcofego Basher,Duke Ried just to mentioned a few of the original sound systems. Long before those little young ones was born, but you cannot tell them nothing. Because they thought is them invented reggae music,it been around before them was born.I did not mentioned no female singers like Milliy Small with my boy Lollipop,it is the very first song sold a million copies back in the days. Most of these young singers now adays, they are copying the older guys music, because they don't know what they are saying. But what Major Mackerel needs to know that most of the older singers left Jamaica, and living in foreign countries. That is why the younger ones took over the music, and messing it up.So he cannot too blamed the younger generation for what is going on.I am going to mentioned all the top artists like himself,Burrro Banton, Brigadier Jerry, Ranking Joe,Ekamouse from Waterhouse,I know all of you guys started to DJ behind the God father's like Uroy,Iroy Dennis Alcapone,King Stittch,Big Youth.I been travelling to foreign countries from in the 1980s, and I saw a few of the older reggae singers just by the streets side wasting time.I was in England and a saw a few reggae singers wasting time, and I am now living in the united States of America over two decades and. I have saw a few of these them singers in the united States of America wasting time, some of them have to go back home.I myself useto do a little jd back in the 1968_89, my stepfather useto have a sound system.Which he carries from the united States of America from in the 1967, and I useto operated it. That is how I useto do a little thing,so I been around a very long time.I useto living in the Waterhouse area from 1968 near to King Tubbys,Sir Don down by Tower Hill,I useto go by Black Scarpio to listen to Sassafras the house man.

It's a natural process for things to live, evolve and die. But it's also of cultural importance to keep alive that which you view as critical to the servival of your culture. Reggae is such an integral part of Jamaican culture that If it is allowed to die Jamaica, as we know it, will die and think we are witnessing this as we speak.
