For the past couple of days I have been seeing comments under this video asking Why is my Video in Urdu? (This comment is in English so everyone can understand) 1. Because, the people who speak punjabi are not the issue. This message is more important for the Punjabi speakers who no longer speak punjabi. 2. And secondly I mentioned in the video, I myself have not been taught Punjabi as a child, but it's never too late to learn. 3. This channel only has videos in Urdu (ft. english) and that's how it will remain. 4. Its important to remember that each language has its own place for me personally Urdu, English and Punjabi all form a key part of my identity. No language is bad. We need to learn to keep the politics out and keep the hate out and protect and enhance each part of our identity ❤ Love, Mesha.

If you are a patriotic Pakistani, you should not have made this video. This is at a time when Pakistan is going instability, and there is growing animosity against Punjabis not from Urdu-speaking people but from Pashtuns, Baloch and Kashmiris. Essentially, you have become an asset for Indians who wish to sow seeds of discontent amount various ethnic and linguistic groups in Pakistan in order to divide Pakistan. They are having a field day with your video. Urdu is the essential glue which holds Pakistan together. Why would you want to weaken the bonds of our nation? By the way, Urdu also has its roots in Punjab. So what's the problem? I am wondering if you are an Indian yourself or have a parent who is Indian.

One should be proud who he/she is but for right reasons . Don’t allow divisions and don’t allow nepotism based on languages only , I am Punjabi myself but unfortunately we do have that element among us . Everyone should learn other languages. I speak 5 languages myself and trying to learn 6th .

In my country Punjabi is on rise...Official language of Punjab State...one of 22 official languages of India...second language after Hindi in Haryana ,Chandigarh, Himachal and Delhi..Punjabi is written over our currency notes in India. Punjabi language is compulsary in all Universities of Punjab and India is giving poets like Batalvi, Patar etc in modern world. Bollywood is promoting Punjabi songs and people feel proud to be Punjabi speaking.

Punjabi, in eastern Punjab will live till eternity because Sikh scriptures are all written in Gurmukhi which was developed by Guru Angad Sahib ji, the 2nd guru of the Sikhs. Literal Punjabi is so sweet and graceful compared to some othe languages and that, since Sikhs have adopted Punjabi it is being defamed thru conspiracy which will fail eventually.

No it will not because the Gurmukhi script for Punjabi will survive but the Guru Granth sahib is not in Punjabi it is in a variety of languages including Punjabi. In Indian Punjab the Hindu Population have abandoned it. In Chandigarh the Capital Hindi is the most spoken language. Punjabi Ethnicities are becoming an minority in Punjab we are already a minority in all of our Indian Punjabi cities Punjabis are now a minority. Our villages are rapidly depopulating due to international migration. Amongst Sikhs yes Punjabi will survive longer but English will replace it eventually.

@Nin-zg5uw The British are the ones that imposed Naksh script on the Sindhis as they were familiar with that script and they had a preference for Hindustani as the language of governance and Nastaliq as the script for British India. Khudabadi or Devdehn is ancestral script of the Sindh and Punjab, modern day Gurmukhi is an adaptation that allows for the tonality and extra sounds found in Punjabi.

I'm impressed! Your explanation about the challenges facing Punjabi resonated deeply with me. Even though I'm Afridi by tribe, I grew up in Lahore and speak Punjabi fluently. Punjabi holds a special place in my heart. There's a truth to the saying that Punjabi wit and humor have a unique flavor unlike anything else. It's a truly one-of-a-kind language. Even though I spent half my life in Milan, Italy, I was lucky to connect with Punjabi families there. It just strengthens my appreciation for the language's special character. In your explanation of the potential decline of Punjabi, I felt a connection to the lament and sorrow expressed by Amrita Pritam in her poem "Aj Aakhan Waris Shah Noon." While the poem's context and your video's topic are certainly different, I felt a similar sense of loss ("hook") in both works.

First of all, young lady I want to congratulate you for raising this issue, which actually deserves even more attention from different quarters. Despite the fact that I have no family or friends’ connection with Punjabi language and have never lived in Punjab but I speak Punjabi pretty fluently as a non-native speaker of Punjabi language, and I am proud of it. Punjabi is a beautiful language with millions of native speakers throughout Indian subcontinent in particular, and the rest of the word in general. You have done good research and pointed out the fears of Punjabis for supporting and adopting Urdu, because of the fear of the dominance of majority Bangali language in the united Pakistan before independence of Bangladesh. Now that Bangladesh is an independent country, there still are some fears of people for not speaking Punjabi “ Ma Boli”their mother tongue, I want you to please do the research and find them out. I live in the United States and have traveled to 57 countries on this planet, wherever I met a Sikh Punjabi during my travels, they are so proud of speaking Punjabi language. The only people who have problem with Punjabi Muslim people from Pakistan, they will speak broken “Ghalat Salat” Urdu but shy away from their mother tongue.

Ek arabic mazhab ne pakistan mei mother-tongue Punjabi ko khatam hi kar diya. Pakistan mei Punjabi bolne se ek arabi mazhab khtre mei aa jaata hei. Very nice video! .In India, the same issues somewhat exists for other languages like marwadi. But for Punjabis, they are not at all ashamed of speaking Punjabi. In fact due to popularity of Punbaji songs, even in Bollywood, other people want to learn Punjabi, want to have Punjabi girlfriend. Its opposite when it comes to India

I'm from Sindh, where we're happy to speak our Sindhi language. Urdu isn't native to our region, so we don't feel the need to use it. When Urdu was forced upon us, it contributed to Bangladesh breaking away. I'm glad to see Punjabi people embracing their own language now.

I am Urdu speaking from Karachi. I can speak Sindhi because I spent a couple of years in a small part of Sindh where everyone spoke Sindhi. I was also good at speaking Punjabi since 80% of my childhood friends were Punjabi. When I visited their villages in Punjab or even their houses in my town, their parents spoke to me in Punjabi, and I responded in a mix of Urdu and Punjabi. However, the major thing is, since I moved to Karachi 10 years ago, I have forgotten all other languages; my Sindhi fluency is almost zero because the surrounding environment matters, no one speak Sindhi or Punjabi in surrounding, Interestingly, I am now learning and able to speak Siraiki because the housemaid(masi) who works for us is from South Punjab and speaks Siraiki. The moral of the story is that Urdu is easy to learn with a vast amount of literature and is easy for everyone to understand, regardless of whether they live in a village or anywhere else.

My mom and dad speak in bhojpuri, but while talking to us they speak in Hindi.Due to which we don't know bhojpuri. The same is happening to the rest of the local languages in India ( Himachal, uttrakhand, haryana, rajasthan, up, bihar, mp, jharkhand, chhattisgarh)

@@muslim_first Urdu was the language of the Muslim elite in the entire Subcontinent. The same elite used Farsi earlier. So Urdu bridged the gap between Farsi and local languages. But on a larger scale, our forefathers wanted to move closer to Islamic cultures of Western Asia and Urdu was an easy way to teach Islamic principles and terminology. That's why Urdu is the primary vehicle through which Islam has spread. That's why Indians dislike it the most, and the people they have no tolerance for are Urdu-speaking Muslims. Urdu is the glue that holds Pakistan together.

I think there is always something to do for bringing Punjabi back to life. As an individual, we should prefer this language for everyday life for example, watch Punjabi movies from Indian Punjab, listen to the Punjabi podcasts from Canada etc. I speak more than three foreign languages fluently: German, English and Chinese, but Punjabi will always be my favorite one.

@@spiritoforient2557 not obsessed truly infact are forced to do so as kids have to speak, learn or take examinations in Urdu or English. This is the problem. If Govt decides to change "medium of instruction" to Punjabi from Urdu in Schools, No Punjabi will teach Urdu with his/her kids.

Punjabi was discouraged as a medium of speech and communication in the official proceedings of West Punjab assembly. چوں کفر از کعبہ برخیزد ۔ کجا مانند مسلمانی؟ It is not about the medium of instruction per se, rather a wholesome perception within Punjabi elite about their language as inferior, vulgar, uncivilised and what not. I've seen schools where communication in Punjabi is a punishable offence.

Nobody has ever produced a video on this topic and discussed it in such detail while maintaining good intellectual balance. FYI, Urdu is not brought to India by Mughals. It was developed during Delhi sultanat period. But Mughal only contributed in its further development. And most of the sikh scriptures are in Sadh Bhasha/ Brij Bhasha/ Awadhi languages. Gurmukhi is just used as a script for these scriptures.

Farsi was the main government language during the time of the Moguls. Then the British came and killed Farsi and promoted Urdu. As for Punjabi, a lot of credit goes to the Sikh empire which gave it a lot of strength.

@@amjadqureshi4622 Punjabi was the language of Punjab before Sikhs came. Sheikh Farid Shakarganj was born in 11th century, Damodar Gulati (15th century), Shah Hussain, Sultan Bahu, Bulle Shah, Waris Shah, Ali Haidar Multani, etc. British were ruling India for around 100 yrs before capturing Punjab. When British attacked Punjab, army was also of CP (Central Provinces / UP, Bihar, etc), so to rule Punjab, they brought their people along with them from CP and had put them on top positions who spoke Urdu/Hindi. Suppressing local language Punjab down and promoting Urdu/Hindi helped British rule Punjab.

I am an Urdu speaker and I think Punjabi is a beautiful language which is being killed. It must be taught not only as a language in all levels in school and colleges but also be a medium of education in Punjab. All regional languages should be electives in schools in other provinces as well. Growing up in Karachi we were taught Sindhi all through school but the quality wasn't good but there were sindhi medium schools as well. Our school had three sections where subjects were taught in English, Urdu, and Sindhi.

@@Tagore603 yes, I am seeing that and it really makes me happy. Punjabi is such a sweet language. Another one-not really a language but a dialect-which I fear might also become endangered is Hyderabadi Urdu. In Pakistan, it has already become extinct. I find it very sweet too. Check out Moin Akhtar doing a Hyderabadi man in Loose Talk. We need to protect all languages and all great cultures regionally and internationally. Far too much has already been lost, we cannot afford to lose any of the remaining beautiful things in this world.

Excellent and logical study.Political developments have contributed to the shrinkage of a beautiful language spoken by beautiful people.Not only in Pakistan even division of the Indian Panjab has reduced the compulsory Punjabi to optional Punjabi in Haryana and Himachal.India being multilingual there is no danger to any language.Though I am a rural Haryanavi yet I love to speak Punjabi.So strange that Pakistani Punjabis don’t take pride in their mother tongue.lnsha-Allah Madam your dreams come true.

Am chief officer in Vships India. Being sailor i hv sailed with so many different crew and officers, not only frm India but from different countries all over world, in last 15 years of my service. As a turbaned Sikh and being Punjabi i hv recieved so much of respect from people frm all over India and World that i proudly broaden my Chest and feel high in saying that i am from Punjab and my language is Punjabi. I hv never seen anyone in my life who could disregard Punjabi language, esp nowdays when Punjabi singers hv taken Punjabi music to World platform. Actually what i think in Pakistan problem is not in punjabi language, problem exist in people who speak Punjabi. In India Punjabi language reflects Punjabi people in Indian Punjab, who are respected in most of the Indian and foriegn cultures being brave, hardworking, trustworthy. So i can say in India, Punjabi language is respected because of Punjabi people. Pakistani Punjabi speakers kindly think over it, why Punjabi is disregarded like this in Pakistan. People in Charda Punjab will lay their lives but never let it happen... as Punjabi lies in our blood in form of Gurbani. 🙏🙏🙏

My grandparents came from Pakistan Punjab to India during partition. Some second and many third & fourth generation Hindu people (of people who came from Pakistan side) don't speak Punjabi anymore unless they live in Punjab. Many Hindu Punjabis rule Bollywood and many industries in India. Another fact is connected to religion. At least, Hindu, Sikhs etc all speak, read, write Punjabi in Indian Punjab. But in Pakistan Punjab, almost everyone had to convert to Islam to survive. And sadly, Islam doesn't tolerate....

I am Pakistani punjabi from a small village, younger generation of my village speaks urdu because parents talk to them in urdu, a punjabi speaking child is super rare these days and it is considered a sign of poverty,illiteracy and backwardness. I don't know how things went this way but it is very concerning. We have lost so many words that nobody uses anymore too!

*Personal Experience* : I was in 5th grade in a village part of District Attock (North of Punjab), and the principal legit told us not to speak Punjabi inside school's premises, not even with eachother in break time. Remember, it was a school in *Punjab* with mostly *Punjabi* speaking students. Even most of the Afghan students were either fully fluent or had great understanding of Punjabi language.

Nothing against any language but I have to say Urdu is a language that belongs to geographical areas that are all part of India and none part of Pakistan. When Punjabi people choose to speak Hindi ( in India ) and Urdu ( in Pakistan) to me it’s a case of inferiority complex. People with weak personalities have this problem. I would have written this comment in Punjabi but the problem is I don’t know Arabic script and People in Pakistan don’t know Punjabi ( NOT GURMUKHI) script. A word about Punjabi script: To call it Gurmukhi script Sikhs made it a script of Sikhs. The Sikh gurus did not create this script just modified ( improved ) it . The intellectual death is clearly evident in the fact that ethnic Punjabis form 54% of Pakistan's population but Punjabi is mentioned as a language in census by only 40%. My parents (both Punjabis) used to mention Urdu as our language because we live in Karachi where you can get killed for speaking a particular language, but I won't repeat their mistake.

It is really heartening to see punjabis in Pakistan raising their voice for their mother tongue Punjabi . Mother tongue of any person is above the barrier of Relgion and the people can have more comprehension in their mother tongue .If you look at India where multiple languages of different states flourish and at the same time they learn national and English language . Lots of Pakistanis protested against a school that tried to ban punjabi and it’s been overturned, I wouldn’t say they’re actively diminishing punjabi it’s just that they don’t care for it. It seemed like you were saying what I have long been saying to my family and friends; Punjabis are ashamed of their beautiful language and don't appreciate its richness. Kudos to you for pinpointing the reasons for Punjabis abandoning it and systematically contributing to its decline. I myself was born to a Punjabi family preferring Urdu to Punjabi leaving me unable to speak it fluently. Still I am urging my children to speak it proudly but this misplaced stigma is hard to get rid of.

Dear Mesha, nice to listen something like this, from a "Pak Ki Beti". Being a Proud Punjabi, I would have written my message in Punjabi, but on this subject, I also want to reach the non punjabi viewers. Before writing anything, I must let you know that Punjabi was the 9th most spoken language world till 1990. 1. Urdu was not brought by muslim rulers from outside India, but it was developed in India to rule the Indian public with a language which has a local touch. It's a mixture of many languages like Persian, Arabic & Sanskrit. It was accepted by the locals, because the dialect & the grammar was very much similar. Hindi (with little more Sanskrit words) is similar to Urdu, only the Alphabets (Lipi) are different. 2. Secondly your graphs show that in 1947, Pakistan was having 67% Punjabi speakers, which declined to 48% in 1981 & further to 39% at present, So if you check the percentage drop per year till 1981 it was very fast @ 0.55% per year. But later it dropped to 0.20% after 1981. So immediately after the Independence the language was attacked by the people who owned this. This is so strange. I will explain the reason below. 3. And out of the 9 parameters shared by you. I tell you that the Religion angle is the most prominent reason. Because Punjabi is facing similar fate in Indian Punjab. Now let's take a dive in the history. It was when the Sikh Gurus were scripting their literature, they did not find any Lipi (Alphabets) for Punjabi. As Urdu being the alphabetic representation for Hindi, can't be used for another language which has wide spread user-base. So the 2nd Sikh Guru (Guru Angad ji) Recollected/Designed Alphabets (Lipi) for Punjabi. This way the language got an Identification a Lipi (The Alphabets). Then they scripted all the Sikh religious literature in Punjabi Lipi (That's why Its also called as Gurmukhi by the Sikhs). So Punjabi also got a tag of a Religious language, and became the reason for Sikhs to be madly protective about it. That's why a language got its Lipi,..... by losing its speakers. I am deeply saddened by the decline, and trying to enlighten the people in India. You may also learn to speak and produce some good VDOs in Punjabi.

Thank you for making this video. Punjabi is a very rich language (it is far advanced than English and any other leading languages). You will not only loose history and old rich literature but also a huge loss for future literature. Things you can say/write and express in Punjabi are very admirable. Me as a Sikh our Guru Granth Sahib Ji ( our last guru/holy book) is in Gurmukhi that is used in Punjab, India as the official script of the Punjabi language. Please read learn and write Punjabi.

Why Sikhs had to invent Gurmukhi when Punjabi was already being written in Shahmukhi? We had Persian as official language since long and even during Raja Ranjeet Singh's Era. @@ImmranKhalid1 gurmukhi not invented it's polished by Guru sahib dear it's proven that gurumukhi is already exists before shahmukhi but not in actual shape as today. And 10000 years ago the day book of shahokars was written in gurumukhi script but the point is that before partition gurumukhi never ever government language of any kingdom or no one official learn this script it's used rural script for local shahokars. But after Guru sahib it's written in Guru Granth Sahib and the official language of any area and named as a gurumukhi. It's not a conflict if any language has two scripts or maybe three because out of India Pakistan in western countries it's also written in text language. Shahmukhi officially applies first for writing Punjabi. Dear as a Sikh it's very important for us to be official The language is gurumukhi otherwise we are disconnected with our roots. And Farsi is the official language during Sikh empire not parsian.
