I am of the opinion that it's us, the truck drivers who have been affected by the morphing of the long hood trucks to the jelly bean trucks. But it's a complicated industry, that's for sure! What are your thoughts on the disappearance of the 'hoods'? Love to hear from you.

Well I hate to see them go its bullshit thats why my son was enquiring about the 389X since only 200 out of 1389 limited edition trucks are allocated for Canada...but I am getting back into a long hood sort of next week Garry bought us a International lonestar so its got the long hood but still sort of aerodynamic will have to see if much fuel mileage loss from the Peterbilt 579 I will give an update when get a trip done to L.A. lm looking forward to losing the digital dash in the 579 I've had it freeze up me no gauges at all just another blunder from the engineering dept at Peterbilt with no update to fix the problem yet but it is a easy temporary fix you just have to do a battery disconnect to reset the dash. Another problem is these manufacturers keep dumbing down these trucks so they can put a monkey in the truck to drive them should just be better training for drivers instead of these steering wheel holders going down the road with booth feet on the dash ear buds on and just clueless of the 80,000 lbs underneath them its a scary thought of who out on the roads nowadays

Oh ya I forgot to mention the price on the 389X he was quoted $308,000 and that is subject to change no guarantee so needless to say thats not happening hes just going to drop a crate DD15 engine in his Western Star 4900EX when the time comes

I am 78 now but I remember my grandfather and my Dad being truck drivers back in the 40s through the 70s. I miss them and their old trucks.

I’m 25 and I’ve been trucking for almost 3 years, it’s always been my dream to drive a long nose Pete. It’s sad that they are disappearing, I start training as a car hauler in a few days and they have some 389’s. Wish me luck, I hope I get one!

That’s why I SO APPRECIATE when old timers like yourself give us a firsthand perspective on the history of trucking of “back in the day” and the legacy of the long hoods. As you know, I drove a 379 for 2.5 years and to this day (I’ll have 29 years experience in February) I STILL SAY there was nothing like it! I got instant respect on the radio from other drivers, and it was powerful and fun to drive. It was my very first “real taste” of OTR Trucking. Every time I see them now, which as you said, is less frequent, my head automatically turns without me even realizing it. It’s just plain instinctive. I REALLY DO appreciate your positive contributions to our industry. 👍 Thanks sir.

I see long hood trucks every day. But I can see in a number of years them becoming extinct. I guess they're running on borrowed time as it is. Another good one from you guys.

I drive a 2019 389 and I worked for 10 years in this industry busting my hump for one amd now I finally have one and in my opinion it totally sucks that we are about to lose these iconic rigs

I just found out the W9 I have been driving is being sold off to accommodate insurance companies who want automatic transmissions and a million accident avoidance sensors. It breaks my heart to see these hoods going away. Makes no sense when a hood in the right hands can be efficient and comfortable! Keep up the good work and never stop calling out the idiocy of those in charge.

I started Trucking at 16 being a Yard Man.. Was an owner operator "long hood" for 10 years in the 80s. Got out of trucking when fuel got stupid $$$.. 64 now. I've got a lot to say about the subject, but you covered it.. great channel! Thank you

Back in 1985 when I first started driving drove a 1958 needle nose Kenworth day cab hauling a dump trailer in Boston she was rough but boy wouldn't I love to go back to that time

I still see a bunch of these trucks on the road. Maybe there's plenty less of them now but there's still so many of them you don't have to cross the country just to go to a truck show to see one of these long nose trucks. Go to any major truck stop. There's thousands of truck stops. So it's a little dramatic to make it seem like these types of trucks are not still a dime a dozen. They're still fluidly in everyday traffic on major interstates

I'll definitely miss the long-hood trucks. I'm currently 14 and I want to be a trucker when I grow up, but I want to be in a good-looking, shiny, and reliable truck instead of the modern trucks that break down all the time that International, Freightliner, and all the other truck manufactures are putting out. I hope someone gets up in politics and ends all this government nonsense!

Well one thing is for sure, by the time you’re of driving age in 7 more years, there will be changes as usual. Whether for the better or not remains to be seen. Drove an 85 W900 for a while. Cat, 15 speed, 3.90s and tall rubber. That big girl had no steering cut and was hell to back up, and oh she only got 4.8 mpg combined. Anteaters can be stuck almost anywhere and can turn on a dime. Now I believe you can make a big hood more efficient with tuning and friction reduction, but the laws of physics and aerodynamics are still what they are.

In Australia you still see a lot of new long hood trucks. T909, T610 SAR and Western Star 48-4900 being most common. I think it's because aerodynamics aren't as important when the Gross weight is 130,000 Lbs. Edit. However the sleepers and chassis length are very short.

I grew up with my dad and grandpa along with several uncles that drove cabovers and can remember the day that they got there first hood , it was something that they all were proud of, I also thought then that one day I was going to get one, and did. Now I own my own trucks and was looking forward to seeing it grow and get a hood or two, but it’s looking like those days are going down for good,,,,,, well not good because when there gone a lot of drivers are going to go with them. A very sad day for trucking

Hey man you're speaking to the choir. I started driving in 87 w/ 4900 Western Star 280" wheelbase pulling a 48 102, beautiful truck w/ a 80" sleeper. I could get that truck in just about anyplace, there were a few places in the northeast that were challenging. But w/ a little patience and skill it worked out. Then in the early 90s you started to see the 53' trailers. By then I was an owner/operator making good money too. Owned a few trucks by the mid 90s. At that point they began to mess with the regulations, everyone was running 53 footers. As trailers got larger I stopped running trucks to the northeast entirely, my trucks wouldn't fit in the smaller docks anymore. Forced to run bigger trailers but no increase on length and weight restrictions, plus fuel costs forced the large cars out to pasture. Now I'm 56 and a owner of a modest trucking company(40 trucks) and construction company. (mainly dump trucks and heavy equipment) I held onto the big hoods as long as I could until it wasn't profitable, still haven't converted to autos, that's another story. But I do miss driving those big behemoths, the sound the power, ahhhh. I'm gonna need a minute.

Been around d the industry all my life, my dad had 7 Trucks @ one point, so I'm no stranger to the industry. Been driving since I was 13, n I'm 55 now and it's a disgrace what's been done to the industry. Roll on along, keep the rubber side down.

I’m been trucking for 7 1/2 years, pretty much heavy haul since I started, started moving drillings at 25 and now move heavy equipment and i love it! I’ve always loved those long hoods! My favorite looking trucks are the old needle nose butterfly hood Pete’s and KWs! Todays modern trucks, I would love to have my own 379 or 388 long nose!

I was reading a article estimates that a truck stop with level 3 charging for tractor trailers would take the equivalent of a small to mid size Towns power.

I started in the early 80's in a cabover and within a year and a half was in a worn-out R model mack with a coffin on the back. Little bit later finally got into a hood flattop. Oh son life was good. Had me a loud long distance radio, handful of paper lying books and a pack of comdata checks so I could go to the fuel desk and get good ole green USA money with pictures of past Presidents. Wore nice clean wranglers, a nice looking western shirt and nice polished boots. My truck was kept as clean as the weather would allow. I would eat inside the dinner with my bag beside me because I just got out of the shower. Always left the lil cutie waitress a good tip and a kind word before walking over to the game room to look down to the pinball heroes. (Didn't have time for any games. Back in the seat for round 2 with the second logbook of the day. We didn't walk around in sweat pants and flip flops and a nasty sweat shirt with a ball cap on the head settin falf crooked while eating a whole pizza on the way to the truck. We had to much self respect for that mess. Sweat pants were acceptable at 3am during an emergency restroom run. Things have changed a lot in the last few years. Absolutely disrespectful the way things have changed. My rant is over. Thanks for listening.

Have to say with the loss of these long hoods we will see them surging more in popularity. Recently running I49 from Shreveport to Lafayette Louisiana I have seen a huge surge in restored Cab Overs running the big road. I expect to see this happening when it comes to the long hoods once you cannot buy them new anymore.

We use the long nose 379 Peterbilts for our trucks hauling side-dumps. In Nebraska you see a lot of the farmers using and cherishing their 379s.

Hi there ' I'm a new viewer ,old Trucker. I drive for a friend and long-time family run business that in the 70s and 80"s was a moving force in the industry. Most of their rigs, Peterbilt ,many Ext.hoods .back when drivers would work for Chrome . I drive local mostly. In a 379 Ext.hood ,not very efficient as far as fuel goes. It is what this old back will endure, though . Short wheel base (jelly beans) would be preferred in some of the places I deliver,but they still llove to see that old Iron rolling in .

I’m still working on getting my CDL in the US. I’ve been driving trucks in the UK for sometime now. I would always get excited when I got to see a rare working American import they are usually used as wreckers but not always. I’m looking forward to driving a real American big rig and not some boring soulless truck. It’s actually the second reason I moved over here after being with my love of course.

I have a local run where I literally have a 30 mile round trip. Fuel economy is of little use. So I'll always have a hood. I make more than enough to drive what I love to drive.

Fuel would be more expensive if the trailers were smaller. If the average payload was 5% lower, they'd need to run 5% more loads to get the same amount of product moved. More trips costs a lot more fuel than a slightly wider trailer.

I used to work for KW as Diesel Mechanic and I drove as a mover my favorite truck has always been the Peterbilt 379 I like the W900 but the Pete sits lower and turns tighter especially backing up at least to me but I remember when the Lonestar came out the dealership/idealease I worked for got one of the first Harley Davidson Edition I loved that thing to

Sadly, here in Brazil we are in the same path, but a few miles ahead. It's been a couple of years since only cabovers have been manufactured. As you correctly said: all in the name of GREED... But anyway let's keep rolling and never let ours long nose friends die. I keep riding my 1996 Volvo NL12... God bless!

My 96 w9 has got over 2.5mil on the frame rails. Place I'm signed on with has alot of guys running paper, old hoods and even some cabovers. Still see a good amount of cool old trucks running steel

I've heard that they want to make the trailers even bigger now. It won't be long before we'll start seeing cabovers again. They won't look like the cool, classic American cabovers though, more like the goofy looking European rigs.

The first truck I drove was an 82 peterbuilt cab over. Sure the hell don't miss it. Drive it at john rays roofing company in stockton ca. My first week on the job the front tire came off on hy 5 in Tracy going 55. It hit like the center concrete devider and flew like 200 feet in the air.

I work for a smaller company in Adelaide and most of our fleet are Cat ( Navistar) , you know a typical modern plastic truck. The other a guy in a W 900 was in the yard picking up a load , talk about a blast from the past.

I just watched this video sitting in my 05’ w900L coffin sleeper truck the boss just picked up for me out of Alberta, Canada, waiting to pick up a set of super B clam dumps while staring at the truck yard of a company that has a handful of conventional long hood Pete’s parked in it. This Kenny is my first dedicated hood truck in the 9 years I’ve been driving, and absolutely love it compared to my snub nose 2022 freightliner 114SD. The ride quality is incomparable.

I have a really nice 379 sitting in the driveway. I only haul oversized or heavy equipment. A guy can't afford to use it hauling general frieght anymore.

I don't think they'll ever go away, at least not completely. It's like the slow demise of the V8 and manual transmission, plenty of people will keep them alive and working no matter what. I still see them daily, whether in the cab of my beet truck or driving around in my personal vehicle, lots of long hoods still out on the road. I've only ever gotten the pleasure to drive one long hood truck in my lifetime and that was a KW W900, what an experience it was! Looking down that long plane of square hood just has some uniqueness to it that can't be explained.

I used to repair and maintain longhoods even couple cab overs. There fun to work on, with exception to working on its tires. Once thing I still hate working on tires to these beautiful machines

I seen a custimized Peterbuild 379 a week ago a town over. Had a dragonskull grill, sunvisor so big, it seem like he'd have to bend over just to see through the windshield. lol Was a cool sight, though, I live in a dairy town, and see quite a bit of the old longhoods, usually run down, though. They are used for short hauls between the dairies and the cheese factory, etc.

I do want to point out the arguably biggest benefit of curved hoods vs long hoods. Better visibility and therefore safety. Your frontal Blindspot is decreased significantly when the hood is curved, even just by a couple of degrees. Another thing is that long hoods accommodate larger engines, but as the years have gone by manufacturers have been able to get more power out of smaller engines (Hell Ford is getting 500 horsepower and 1200 pounds of torque out of their 6.7 power stroke from the factory) Not saying is better than the other, but rather just some points that were glossed over or potentially missed.

I do as you say 'gloss over' some points to save viewers the agony of watching a longggggger than necessary video. WWe'd need to take a look at the accident rates/hood style to confirm that the extra visibility decreases accidents. I'm doubtful that's true. It's often the skill of the driver.

Still some good looking trucks working in Nebraska. Especially pulling bull racks and grain hoppers. But I agree, I-80 is full of inconsiderate ugly trucks. Most have no idea what flashing your lights mean. For example, cops, wildlife or dangerous conditions on the road, or even when they are passing you and are safely past you.

Yes sir, Thank you so much for the video much appreciated .I drive a Peterbilt 389 with the 270 wheelbase and a 53 ft trailer My company is having me go to some little meat market down in Chicago Illinois. Now I did my research they would be lucky to get a day cab short day cab in there mind you. I'm fixing to tell my company no I'm not going in there. Of course if they send me a message on my electric logs that they will take all responsibility for whatever could happen I will take the challenge. Love you guys have a very good day.

I use to drive a 379 and it was awesome. I really do miss driving her. His son had a 377 he stretched out to 302. Amazing to drive even though it was the original motor but bumped up

I won't miss the old school trucks at all. They had their place and time, but they have larger blind spots, are less comfortable, larger turning radius, less room, and are louder inside. That means both my office space and my home are worse in those old trucks. They look better than most of the new trucks, but looks are the lowest item on the list. As nice as my T800W is for heavy haul, the 49X blows it out if the water in every way, and honestly looks better with the chrome grill.

Yes, every time I see a long hood, it catches my eye and I say now THAT'S a truck! FL CLASSIC XL w/60 series and 13 spd is my favorite. Been at it 6 years and drove a classic for 4 months but still have yet to drive the XL......someday!

Yes I will miss them Retired 35 yr driver recently my Son has been trucking for 10 yrs moved up to one of thous large cars Pete 389 Ian he's walking with his chest out and walking proud, I'm considering coming out of retirement to team this truck.

Hate to see the long nose’s become extinct. Use to drive one myself. It was a little older model but I loved it by much more than the newer models with shorter hood’s. It was just a more comfortable large car. It had a 252 inch wheelbase; a custom built sleeper with all the luxuries during that time period; slept two very comfortably; for power it had the very well tuned 1693 TA Clatterpillar w/ Brake Saver; twin stick 5 and a 4 trannies; and 11.X24.5 rubber with 4:10 gears. It was a ‘73 Pete. And I loved it! In my humble opinion, that 1693 TA Clatterpillar Engine was the best ever built. I miss those days but still really enjoy seeing and admiring them Long Nose Large Cars going down the road.

Every single time I'm at work, and I see an old piece of iron still on the road, I just take a second to enjoy it, it's shame those old girls are slowly going away, especially here in California, back in Colorado they were pretty often too see, now it's all just drop nose trucks that aren't taken care of for shit. On top of that, everytime I hear one that's pre emissions, gotta roll the windows down just to listen too her. Dave you are lucky you got to start your career in them, each and every day im at work I just wish I could've drove back in the 70s, im jealous. Still trying my best to find a local company out here that has a fleet of long hoods, no luck unfortunately.

Sad but true . I started in the 70’s with COE’s then long nose conventional to small hood short wheel based day cabs. Glad I retired in 2006 .

I miss the long hoods and triple digit trucks from 20+ years ago when I started. I told my bosses that they need to get 2 new drivers or get me an older E-log exempt truck too. Come January when we have to put the e-log in the trucks I run for them, I’m only doing local stuff. On paper logs it’s all good, once the computer tells me to shut it down an hour from the yard unless they’re going to pay me to sit the next 10 I’m out LOL

I have been in and out of trucking, since the early 70's, now retired / disabled. The only areas the long hoods are now seen are on dedicated heavy hauls . American senators have fixed trucking with the EPA until trucking is broke to the point of no repair , sad

I am just about to start my trucking career and im hoping one day i can get a peterbilt 379. It is my dream to drive one and own one. I just hope they dont disappear before i can own it.
