The American Founders believed that the principles of the Declaration and the Constitution were not simply preferences for their own day, but were truths that the sovereign and moral people of America could always rely on as guides in their pursuit of happiness. This course considers the principles of the American Founding-which are described most famously and concisely in the Declaration of Independence-as well as key features of American government based on those principles. Led by Hillsdale College President Larry P. Arnn, the course also examines the major challenges posed by Progressivism to American constitutionalism.

Hillsdale College is an independent institution of higher learning founded in 1844 by men and women “grateful to God for the inestimable blessings” resulting from civil and religious liberty and “believing that the diffusion of learning is essential to the perpetuity of these blessings.” It pursues the stated object of the founders: “to furnish all persons who wish, irrespective of nation, color, or sex, a literary, scientific, [and] theological education” outstanding among American colleges “and to combine with this such moral and social instruction as will best develop the minds and improve the hearts of its pupils.” As a nonsectarian Christian institution, Hillsdale College maintains “by precept and example” the immemorial teachings and practices of the Christian faith.
The College also considers itself a trustee of our Western philosophical and theological inheritance tracing to Athens and Jerusalem, a heritage finding its clearest expression in the American experiment of self-government under law.
By training the young in the liberal arts, Hillsdale College prepares students to become leaders worthy of that legacy. By encouraging the scholarship of its faculty, it contributes to the preservation of that legacy for future generations. By publicly defending that legacy, it enlists the aid of other friends of free civilization and thus secures the conditions of its own survival and independence.

There is an amazing amount of consent in this headlong rush toward tyranny. First, a couple of generations had to be propagandized in our public schools. These generations were to be largely uneducated in history and critical thinking, morally bereft, and fundamentally cowards willing to consent to manipulation because they cannot discern right from wrong. (The lyrics of "He Plays the Game" by Mark Heard sum this up as, "Right is what he thinks he does for others. Wrong is what he thinks they do to him.")

There are three phrases in the Declaration of Independence that are so misinterpreted! “Creator” and “The Laws of Nature and of Nature’s God” and “Devine Providence”. Undeniably these are reflections of the individual inherent natural unalienable right of “conscience”. Nowhere in the Declaration is there any appellation to the Christian god! It is to a deity as the individual interprets according to their “right of conscience”. That the founders were Christians is unequivocal, however, they were all of different sects, each with their own interpretation of what their dirty was/is. Quakers, Catholics, Baptists, Anglicans, Lutherans, etc. all had their own interpretation of “god”. Jefferson himself was an agnostic which in the context of his time was a sin so he had to “play the game” of those around him lest he be prosecuted and persecuted. You must remember that forced religion was mandated by Colonial Charter of each British colony in America which entailed mandated participation. The American colonies were founded on religious persecution, a fact most people are ignorant of today.
@ruthnovena40
@ruthnovena40 3 жыл бұрын
The persecution for some may be freedom foe others. The reason Pilgrims left England was to be able to practice their faith. Jefferson had a bible . He is the one responsible for our right of religion. He did not want the state (fed.) setting up a state religion. At the time some mis took this to mean no religion.. After some time Jefferson, wrote his own bible, He believed that the message of Jesus had been lost . He called himself a Christian.
@richardkramer1094

@@ruthnovena40 The Pilgrims left England to escape religious persecution, however, they sold their souls to the company who financed the voyage. That company set the religion for those on the voyage. They went from religious persecution to religious persecution. There were colonies long established on American soil before the pilgrims arrived in 1622. I am descendant of those on the Mayflower as well as those who came before. You must read Jefferson’s own words to have an understanding of Thomas Jefferson…I have. Yes, he wrote his own Bible but have you ever read it?

Neither shalt thou swear by thy head, because thou canst not make one hair white or black. But let your communication be, Yea, yea; Nay, nay: for whatsoever is more than these cometh of evil."
