The Decline of Chinese Martial Arts

My overly long rant about haters in the Chinese Martial Arts community and how their negative attitudes and criticisms have brought about the decline and lack of interest in the art. Incessant nitpicking, strict adherence to lineage, and egocentric views have cultivated a community of annoying critics who have very little to contribute to the martial arts community as a whole. Don't kill the art... stop the needless nitpicking and criticism. Just get off your ass and train! Thanks for watching!

Great Video Sakan! I really appreciate your passion for the Chinese Martial Arts! Training with you, Rameez, Scott, Doug, G, and everyone else back during the turn of the millennium were some my favorite times as a Kung Fu/Tai Chi practitioner/teacher! Can't wait to train with you in person soon! IN THAILAND!!! :) My best, Jake Mace

+Kung Fu & Tai Chi Center w/ Jake Mace I have to say that those were some of the best years and defining moments of my life. The knowledge and training you shared with us has carried on to this day... I'm still very grateful. Looking forward to collaborating with you here in Thailand! Best wishes, Sifu Jake!

Right on Sakan! Still remember watching Shaolin challenges ninja with you, Jake and Eric way back in the day. And you're right about what you're saying. I think Jake is mostly getting hit by trolls just trying to create drama on his page. I love seeing how hard you're training and working on your martial ability!!

+Josh Quick It's amazing to see how much of an impact Sifu Jake has had on our development and how he continues to inspire people through his work ethic. The trolls are ridiculous... they comment and watch every single video, spend hours every day replying to posts. And if they aren't subscribed by now then it's obvious how much Jake OWNS them. Thanks for your comment and support brother.

Unfortunately, I think this is more than just Chinese Martial Arts. Happens a ton in Okinawan and Japanese Martial Arts, as well, unfortunately. At any rate, you said it best here: "Don't kill the art. Stop nitpicking." Some of the best advice I've heard. Keep training hard, brother, and keep posting videos! (Also, super cool that you trained with Jake Mace!!)

+Stan R. Mitchell You are right... this sort of thing happens to martial arts across the spectrum and generally involves the unskilled and untested speaking of those who put forthright effort. I'm fortunate that people rarely speak poorly of me and my channel... but it bothers me to see such negativity and hypocrisy take place among my peers. I'll keep training and ignoring the keyboard warriors. I just hope we are in for a martial arts Renaissance in the near future! Thanks and take care!

I think great part of the problem is what you said, people are obssessed with irrelevant details instead of focusing in having greater speed, strenght, reflexes and accuracy, i have been in dojos where the black belts where arguing about the "right position" when you throw a punch and difference between those positions were of less than an inch, there is no point or relevance in that, they should be more focused on sparring and learning what is better for defence, no wonder that so many people believe that chinese martial arts are just for show.
@SakanLam
@SakanLam 8 жыл бұрын
+PochocloEn3D Chinese martial arts and their practitioners have dug a hole for themselves by ingraining their techniques and setting them in stone. The movements have become ritualistic, holy, and unquestionable to some of the extreme groups. A lot of them have failed to experiment and evolve through sparring and fighting, which is simply ridiculous. What I like about Filipino Martial Arts is that the teachers expect you to adapt and change according to the situation, yet they still carry a tradition of set movements. Kung Fu should be doing the same... The last form and specialization that came out of the Shaolin Temple was Praying Mantis, and it was combined with Monkey style footwork. This is evidence that Chinese Martial Arts were to evolve and continue growing... however that growth was stunted by the insistence of strict adherence to tradition. The Chinese Martial Arts Masters today should be creating their own forms, but of course they would be ostracized from the community if they did so.

I totally agree... it's so easy for people to hate on others, much easier than acknowledging talent and someone applying themselves and contributing to others. It reflects insecurity... and when it comes down to it, martial arts is based on the human anatomy and if you are a practitioner of an art that deals with striking, joint manipulation, or both, then you'll be able to tell if a technique can work or not.... regardless of wether the pinky is in a 45 degree angle or not. Jake Mace's stuff is not the easiest martial techniques (for the most part, some of his moves are simple and street-efficient) but that is the martial ART... and he's far more talented than the average person commenting or even the average martial artist commenting. Also when someone puts out that much content on KZfaq, it can't all be perfect, if you only do what you're perfect at you'll never grow. You said what I've felt like saying when reading the Jake Mace haters... of course if he wasn't hugely succesful there'd be far less haters.
@SakanLam
@SakanLam 8 жыл бұрын
Yeah I kind of wish I had more haters, then I'd know my channel is a success for sure! There's nothing to it other than simply training what is available to you and what you have preference for. Once you understand the body mechanics then you can start to see and judge for yourself, who and what art is legit or not. People get caught up in lineage and what not may fail to recognize that succession does not always produce the best teachers or martial artists.

Indeed, and the thing is, all martial arts was created by someone. If people refused to ever do something which hadn't been done the exact same way for 1000 of years, martial arts would never evolve, and there wouldn't be thousands of (now old traditional) styles of kung-fu... there'd only be what Bodhi Dharma left the Shaolin temple with (according to legend).

Alexander Higgins Thanks for the comment bro. I'll check out your videos and opinions when I have the chance and get back to you. I'm not a fan of nitpicking or excessive criticism, especially when some channels take things out of context or make cheap shots. However, regarding Jake Mace I'm starting to lose my respect for him as he continues to keep pushing the same material again and again without properly addressing some of the concerns viewers have for him.

The major issue isn't his stances, practice, etc. Though, there are a fair amount who are upset that he does not match their expectations of a self proclaimed master. The major issue is his claiming to be a master of arts people cannot trace. People can trace his Shaolin-Do Karate training, but not his Wing Chun, Xingyi, etc. He did state he learned more than Shaolin-Do when he studied, and I am inclined to believe that, as many Shaolin-Do and former Shaolin-Do teachers teach other arts who's forms are not found in Shaolin-Do. Including a few he featured on his channel under the Bagua banner. But because he legally cannot mention his teachers, thanks to Sin Kwang The's suite, it makes it hard on him.
@SakanLam
@SakanLam 6 жыл бұрын
HsinHao Wang You make a very strong point. My views towards him have changed since making this video as well... His attempt to sell Wing Chun videos is what brought about my concern, as throughout the time I've known him, I've never seen him take any classes in Wing Chun under an experienced instructor. As for Xing Yi, it was part of the Shaolin-Do curriculum. He's definitely in a difficult place legally, but the best thing he could do is dedicate himself to learning a new system and representing it after a few years of practice. Thanks for commenting.

Sakan Lam Cheers mate.... I practice BaguaZhang, Xingyi Chuan and Yang, Chen Li & Wu Hao forms of TaiChi..... not the watered down varieties...... t's all good fun and keeps me busy.... I am over 6ft and 125 Kg and can move like a whip, dragon or butterfly.... its a wondrous uplifting feeling. Our master has the title "Man of 1000 forms..." He's the go to master out here in Australia... and the best thing he is self taught..... he has taught us to fish ourselves and not expect to be force fed. He has also imparted to our little group poignant insights into the machinations of the martial world (and life) many of which you too can obviously see...... Great job .... !! ;-)

***** That's really awesome. I love the internal Chinese arts as they teach excellent body mechanics and can be practiced well into old age. I used to love practicing Bagua Zhang over and over again, but hardly knew how to apply it. Recently there's been a video on how it is used to do sweeps and takedowns... really beautiful stuff. Thank you for your support!!

All the martial arts work other wise they wouldn't have bin created haven't at that point in time to protect those people and they still work now, and help with self renewal. Not everyone is exactly the same so we can't do everything the same for Chinese martial art or any. I personally love your videos, and I hope you can spread the love of your passions. You are right, and I hope the decline is fad and will come back some time. I wish I could learn martial arts but all that's around me is taekwando next to bike shops and Small MMA gyms with weird skinny guys with mustaches who are next to a gas station who are teaching little kids. Nothing wrong with the martial arts just hard finding proper teachers that I'll know I'll learn from. I'll share this video and like.

+Aizeula Ivari Martial arts have tons of benefits beyond fighting and sport, so either way we should be appreciative of hard work and determination from all skill levels. I know exactly what you mean about limited access to martial arts, because I used to live in my wife's hometown of Surin... where there were only dirt poor Muay Thai gyms that doubled as farms. I ended up getting desperate and taking a Taekwondo class and ended up being the only 30 year old that was jump kicking alongside 10 year olds. Needless to say, I enjoyed the experience and learned a lot from it! Keep an open mind and take what you can get! Thanks for your support, it means so much to me!

Very good points made I have seen a decline in other traditional martial arts systems, I think it is because people do not have the patience to learn the system or the art and the philosophy behind it.

+TangSooDoArnis4Life I think people demand too much and aren't willing to contribute or sacrifice the efforts necessary to master an art. It is not the art which fails us, but we who fail the art... Thanks for your contribution, my friend!

the video cut off halfway through it on me but I would just like to tell story with on this subject. Chinese martial arts roots have been always traditionally rooted in the idea of developing the complete man. Being mind,body,spirit bring unity and balance. Chi as a explosive tool,self defense,exciting feats were all part of " benefit " to the dedication to self development and universal, spiritual awareness. Modern society has gotten away from it. Much of the focus is on the violence and how to apply that as quickly as possible with as little training and personal development as possible. This is just a element of a much bigger problem in my opinion. Thank you for sharing
@SakanLam
@SakanLam 8 жыл бұрын
+jamian carreon Thank you for your input. I believe every martial art has its roots in self-development and self-perfection. At the lowest level, martial arts is about self-preservation. However, a warrior must test himself and face challenges before coming to the realization that his ultimate training should be directed towards defeating his own ego and serving others selflessly. It's absolutely try that modern society has moved away from this... and I hope more martial artists and fighters in the mainstream will start carrying themselves with the air of martial spirit like Lyoto Machida, GSP, and Stephen Thompson have.

I believe with the emergence of MMA and with the likes of people like Joe Rogan down grading style focused Martial Arts to uplift MMA is one of the reasons Chinese Martial Arts and others are getting a bad rap. For me, I'm not in a position to criticize any martial arts or martial artist being that i only trained in one . I only can speak on my experience and what I know. Good video bro.

I think that those who critique on form and stance/ do not understand their own movements of their body. everyone moves different and in Chinese martial arts it's about knowing your own body and how it moves being one with yourself and nature. appreciate how you move and focus on that not how another moves for you are not them
@SakanLam

I think it's okay to critique form as long as the intention is right. Some people only want to give input for attention and tend to distract themselves to the fact that their own skills and conditioning isn't up to par.

Right on the money brother. I've been following shifu Jake Mace for a while now without knowing that he was your shifu. I saw many haters there but didn't really care to examine them to why they did that, especially calling someone a fraud. I never like that and in fact that's my main reason for breaking someone's teeth from time to time. I follow the guy because he has the right mind though. I couldn't remember exactly but something that he said in his video hits home for me. I watched almost all of his videos and I can see his dedication, humility and his love for what he does. That's more than enough for me to respect someone. I still don't understand why some people calling him fraud and honestly I don't care. I've seen far worst performance and teaching from those with certificates before which makes me laugh all the time. Haters gonna hate brother. Trolls get there satisfaction from playing with your head. Unless they walk right to your dojo, just leave them be. I don't think these keyboard commando would ever dare walking into your dojo anyhow. Peace bro.

+Foon UMS Thanks Kru Foon. Nobody knows that during the early years of our Shaolin training in Arizona, our school was on the verge of collapse. Sifu Jake was simply a 1st degree black belt in our art and he took the ENTIRE responsibility of keeping the school running so that we could get training. Dude sacrificed so much of his youth for us and kept pushing through. Years went on and then he got slandered, betrayed, and sued by those he dedicated his life to learning from. But incredibly he kept going and kept training and teaching. I've never seen such incredible will power from an individual. He has been through Hell and back as a martial arts instructor, and I';m proud to have been his student. People who don't know him or his struggle are always talking bullshit. He's still my Sifu and continues to inspire me to this day. Peace brother, and thanks!

Hey there warrior. If you you don't mind a different perspective. I'm older and there was plenty of Kung Fu in kickboxing. As one repping the Southeast Asian martial arts at the time I ran into many. I was around when martial arts schools of all varieties started watering down their teachings to not only accomodate Western Sports fighting but also they make it easier for Lil Johnny to earn a black belt. They also stopped teaching the full self defense aspect of the forms. So the result was they started cranking out teachers who didn't realize there's a dozen small joint manipulation or multiple ways to cause deaths in their forms As expected it was the beginning of the end. But thankfully kickboxing was prevalent so fighting types could still play. Fast forward and UFC makes an appearance. Then sets rules that essentially keep out traditional martial arts. Small joint manipulation is against MMA rules. That ground and pound would get their fighters crippled. Someone proficient in it would snap and dislocate before even going to the ground. Let's just say when UFC started some traditional martial artist took it as a sign they can cut loose and got a bit overzealous? We live in a world where people think sports fighting with rules is actually true combat. So they have a low opinion of traditional martial arts and Asian martial arts in general. All without understanding reality which is hand to hand combat is in three levels Warfare is at the top Someone will perish there are no rules Self defense is second Maintaining control over self and the situation in order to save lives is the rule. Someone may die. Sports Rules specifically in place to control the situation No one dies. It's at the bottom of the list. It's playtime at best. Yet people think this is the standard and hate on arts that have proven themselves in tier 1 and 2. That said the Chinese martial arts didn't factor in the manufactured hate of sports fighting. However I saw signs of this back in the kickboxing days of the 80s. Back then the same caliber claimed boxing was superior kickboxing. Boxing with kicks added. They just didn't have the luxury of pretending they weren't idiots.

does it come from the so called anti-violence and the lost sense of nationalism? china, Korea themselves have create lots of them during the early 20th century? what does it need for except for "health reason".....

That could be a reason... but it seems that as China has emerged as a world power, the more nationalistic it has become. I think the major problem is that Kung Fu and its practitioners have failed to reinvent themselves... but that is simply my opinion. Thanks for commenting.

hey man otaka, a true martial artist will never fight MMA. MMA has rules, boundaries and even matches. real life is not like that, no rules boundaries, or ref. and true martial arts is deadly not playing in a ring to see how many times you can take a hit or give one. nothing against MMA just listen to what Bruce Lee said about MMA and he was a great master
@SakanLam
@SakanLam 7 жыл бұрын
I used to think the same, but then I got to see martial artists such as the Machida brothers and George St. Pierre in MMA competition. They represent Budo and the ethics of the martial arts very well in their behavior. Perhaps it is just an outlet for them to challenge themselves and what they practice. Of course it is nothing close to reality, but they seem to handle themselves very well at the highest level of competition.
