Colonel Wolodyjowski's duel with Andrzej Kmicic is one of those cult scenes in Polish cinema. It was the most difficult scene to create in The Deluge (Polish: Potop). How did the film crew prepare to shoot this scene? How did the actors Tadeusz Łomnicki and Daniel Olbrychski have to prepare for it? Why during the duel - unlike in Henryk Sienkiewicz's novel - it is raining all the time? What is the role of the water element in this scene?

Probably one of the most realistic sword duels ever created. No wasted movement, nor effort on the part of Colonel Wolodyjowski. as is exhibited by the lighting quick strike to the skull ending the duel. None of the over exaggerated flailing we see al to often.

@Andrynor Ω that,s what i like in Ridley Scott "Duellists" - so much tension during fights, people caring about not being cut more than just exchanging blows. I like some flashy moves here and there, that,s what cinema is for :) but when whole fight is over complicated bullshit, with shaky cam and lot of cuts, it makes me tired and is not satysfying to watch.

I watched the Henryk Sienkiewicz's trilogy some years ago. "Potop" (The Deluge, 1974) being the second one chronologicaly both story and production wise, and my favorite. It's a 4h40 movie, which scared me at first, as I didn't know what expect from a "soviet" movie (I'm brazilian). For my surprise, I was amazed by the movie quality, the development of characters, history fidelity. it's great to see the transformation of Kmicic and the strongness of his wife. I still like it very much!

I do not associate rain with Volodievsky's duel with Andrzej Kmicich, although the rain washes away romanticism and exposes the horror of death. The flood is a tragedy for Poland as a whole, and the tragedy is that the Poles, having many enemies outside Poland, nevertheless kill each other.

Cavalry sabers were routinely used with lanyards to prevent losing them during mounted fights. Some regulation sabers even have slits in their guard to accomodate a lanyard, while others simply had the lanyard tied around the grip or knuckle guard.

It is raining, this is an analogy for the inevitability of death and the building pressure on both combatants to best their opponent, the ground is portraying the slippery slope of violence as the more you engage in it the higher the risk of yourself succumbing and slipping into a casket. You know, or its just raining and the guy that made the movie saw seven samurai, thought that was way dope and wanted his confrontation to seem just as dark and hopeless as that movies final battle.

How come the same types of sabers were so popular both in the area that's now Russia as well as in the Middle East? They don't share more cultural exchange than other cultures.

There was in fact plenty of cultural exchange. Cross-border trade is just one of its aspect. Another is migration. There were entire quarters in Ukrainian and Ruthenian cities inhabitated by Armenian merchants and tradesmen. Anyone could go there and buy fine Oriental-styled clothing, weapons or food. Which is in fact mentioned in many places in the "Deluge" book.

This style of saber become very common in Poland during the reign of King Stefan Bathory, a Hungarian during the time when Hungary was an Ottoman vassal. So it was a Turkish style imported into Poland through Hungary. There was also a great deal of cultural interchange between Poland, Moscow, and the Ottoman Empire at the time. Wikipedia says: As the commander of mercenary units, he participated in the expedition of Sigismund of Luxemburg against the Turks in 1428 and covered the ruler's retreat from the battlefield at Golubac (Gołąbec); King Zygmunt sent a boat for Zawisza and ordered him to get on it. The knight decided to stay with his companions on the battlefield. Having sent the boat away, he set off on foot against the Turkish army.

Powodów jest kilka. Widz dzisiaj nie chce ogladać takich filmów. Mlody widz woli kino w stylu hollywodu, elementy fantastyczno - kosmiczne. Zresztą ten lis czeka nawet swiatowe kino z Hollywood. Nawet tam flklasyczne kino historyczne bedzie zanikac wraz ze zmianami kulturowymi w USA i Europie.

@@filip2442 I ma rację. Bo to są techniczne i reżyserskie gnioty. Lepiej kręcić nic nie warte seriale-tasiemce. Widz się przyzwyczai, a my producenci będziemy trzepać kasę bez wysiłku. A ambitne, dobre filmy??
