A worthy final episode from this series Terry. It was a pleasure to watch you both going through ups and downs on this trip. You may not have made it this time, but you sure can look back on a stunning trip with amazing scenery. I hope you will have more luck next time. And thanks for the ad for my channel. I'm not even close on editing and narrating like you do. You know how i hate those strong winds from the side and im amazed how you 2 still can ride 65-70 with those winds. I could never do that alas.

I was in Dawson a couple of weeks after you after having ridden up from Alberta and all over Alaska. I rode the Campbell on my way back. It is indeed a great ride. I returned south from Watson on the Cassiar Hwy. Good thing, because the Alaska Highway washed out east of Watson the day before I headed south. Someday I will go back up and do the Dempster. (In Alaska I rode the Dalton up to the Arctic Circle.) BTW, I ride a Harley Softail.

I've been curious to get someone's opinion on the Campbell highway. I was very curious to hear what we missed out on. Interesting to find out there was even more destruction behind us as we made our way back home! Congrats on doing all of that on a Harley too. I have a couple of friends who rode the Dalton up to the Circle on Harleys and said they'd never do that again. It beat their bikes to hell. Thanks for the information and taking the time to watch and comment.

@@TilTheRoadEnds The Campbell was easy the day I did it. Sunny and dry and the gravel was mostly well packed. So I long as I stayed in a car wheel track I was fine. Probably averaged 80-90 kph. It's 370 km between Ross River and Watson so extra fuel was needed (at least for me.) I think I saw 6 or 8 vehicles in that whole stretch. The portion of the Dalton to the Arctic Circle was no problem -- just had to slow down for some rough stuff but there wasn't a lot. I also did the Denali Highway on that trip and some parts in the middle were gnarly rough. That was the worst of any of the gravel I did that trip.

Can’t say it enough, love the channel. 1# Underrated source of information and entertainment for bike touring. I would like to share for any that don’t know or haven’t heard, the heated jacket performs best if sprayed with two heavy coats of camp dry Heavy duty silicone camp dry. Spray the outside and the inner lower waist abdomen area, sleeves and collar. It will keep the jacket from absorbing water from leaks or from capillary action as experienced by the star of the show. Clean and spray your boots and a small scarf or buff. Use the scarf or buff as a seal around your neck. If you wash, and treat your riding gear with Nikwax “Hardshell Cleaning & Waterproofing Duo-Pack” it will keep water from penetrating your gear and and becoming saturated with moisture. Don’t forget to use this on gloves, it works great. I’ve learned the hard way how dangerous being wet and cold on a bike can be. Best way to avoid this is to clean and treat your shells before every long trip or every spring and fall. Cheers.

Hello Terry, certainly a spirited ride. This video really highlighted some challenges that were not so appealing at all!! Why is it, all the extreme elements found you around every corner? I'll be riding a 17' 650XT V-Strom mid-June from Ohio for this Alaskan adventure with a good friend. He'll be riding a Goldwing with his sites set on the Arctic Circle while mine on Prudhoe Bay. Loved watching your series and especially those drone scenery shots ... so beautiful!! I think a drone is in the near future. Maybe get practicing with before we leave. My return trip will include a Denver area stop for a few days to visit my sister and I would love to share some trip stories with you. You've inspired me once again!!
@TilTheRoadEnds
@TilTheRoadEnds Жыл бұрын
Rick, you're gonna have a great time. Excited to hear you're going to do this trip. You'll enjoy the drone if you do it. But definitely get the practice in. They are quirky little devices. And keep it under 250 grams. Anything beyond that requires a Canadian certification. I have my Part 107 Commercial UAV license and even that is not considered valid in Canada. So, I had to bring my smaller drone on this trip to bypass the Canadian certification. The Mavic Mini doesn't have all of the features my Mavic Pro has, so I was a bit limited in what I could do. When you come back through Denver, what dates are you thinking? I would really enjoy connecting when you come back through. I will be going up the Dempster and the Dalton and I'll be gone for most of July. So, if the dates come together, let's hook up. As always, thank you for being so loyal and taking the time to watch.

Thank you very much. I hope you have a great time. The Heidenau K60's held up well on the V Strom. They probably had about 1000 miles on them before we started the trip. They've still got some miles to go before it's time to change them. The Motoz Tractionator GPS on the Africa Twin were brand new when we left and I'd say they're about 50% tread left on them (just a guess). Mileage on the whole trip was 5928 miles. Thanks for watching.

Great series. Loved the video work, narration and story telling. Am planning a trip to Prudhoe Bay and Tuktoyaktuk this June. Planning to leave Toronto,Canada on June 1. Riding solo…any suggestions on going solo. Is it usually possible to find some company to ride along the treacherous sections of Dempster. Also I would not be booking any hotels as I have camping gear. Is it easy to find camp grounds on dempster and other remote sections. Thanks for your reply.

@TilTheRoadEnds Жыл бұрын
Hi Arvind. Great questions. I think you'll find that you will meet a lot of people along your way to both the Dempster and the Dalton. You won't feel alone. I rode from Denver to the Dalton solo and met many people along the way. I would say you'll have a good chance of finding someone you can tag along with on both roads. And even if you don't, there are plenty of fellow riders going back and forth that would be happy to assist you should anything happen. That's what us Adventure Motorcyclists do. Always willing to help out. You should also find camping along both routes. But keep in mind, camping is not allowed in Prudhoe Bay / Deadhorse. You'll have to get a room up there. I would highly recommend going to the Mile Post web site or purchasing their book. It will provide you with endless amounts of information about the Dempster and the Dalton. You might even take a peak at my video series - Alaska - How I Did It This Time and How I'll Do It Next Time. It might help you out a little bit. Thanks so much for watching and thanks for the comment.

@TilTheRoadEnds Жыл бұрын
Hi Jim, thanks for watching and thanks for the comment. We rode a total of about 6000 miles, from the Denver area to Dawson City and back. The Africa Twin had a brand-new set of Motoz Tracionator GPS tires (with the rear mounted in the 50/50 direction) and I would guess they may still have 5000 miles left on them?? The V Strom had a set of Heidenau K60's with about 2000 miles on them when we left. When we got back, the rear tire was just about finished. I'm going to put a set of the Motoz on the V next time. I was pretty impressed with them. So, no tire changes were necessary. Luckily no flats either. But I always carry a plug kit and small air compressor with me. I also have a bottle of Slime, but I've never had to use it, so I don't know if the stuff is any good or not. Maybe we'll run into each other, I might be going back up in July myself! You're going to love it your trip. Thanks again for taking time out of your day to watch. .

Terry: Great finish to this series of videos. Excellent photos / videos, and you are an excellent narrator and storyteller. Kevin's line about standing (farther to fall) - made me laugh. I think we all feel that at some point. Slimy wet roads are tough, and I think you guys did pretty well. I got stuck on one in Montana once (same situation with the rain) for about 15 miles. I have a couple of questions: 1) what is your current tire configuration for both bikes? 2) If memory serves me, you've had that rain gear for some time. Do you do any maintenance on it (sealing seams / scotch guard)? I think it is made by Olympia(?). Seems to have served you well over the years. How did Kevin's rain gear hold up (and what brand does he use?) Thanks again for taking us along on your adventure. Best: Sean
@TilTheRoadEnds
@TilTheRoadEnds Жыл бұрын
Thank you Sean. 15 miles!!! Wow. I thinks ours was maybe 4 or 5 miles and I seriously considered pulling over and taking a 30 minute break because my arms were so tired. But, you're not allowed to pull over for a rest stop...I guess. I had Heidenau K60's on the V, which I'm happy with and the Africa Twin has Motoz Tractionator GPS, which I was really impressed with. You have a keen eye Sean. My rain gear is Olympia and I've had it since 2014. Where I made my mistake is, I did no maintenance on the gear. I just pulled it out of the closet and rolled it up and stuffed it in the side case. HUGE mistake and I'll never do that again. I did re-spray the jacket before I left, but it wasn't clean and the repellent didn't stick. Lesson learned and I paid the price. That'll be in a future video. I have no issue admitting my foolish mistakes. Kevin wants me to throw it in the trash because he had to listen to me gripe about it for nearly 500 miles, but I think I can revive he gear. I honestly don't know what Kevins gears is. Sorry. Thanks so much for taking he time to watch Sean.

@@TilTheRoadEnds Canadians do an excellent job maintaining the road. They are quick to run a blade over and smooth out pot holes but does leave the gravel looser but manageable. We are generally street riders on BMW GS's and Honda Africa Twin with Motoz and Dunlop 50/50 tires. Weather ranged from 50 degree F and severe clear to 34 and 1/4 mile viz with horizontal rain.
