Drop Wiseman. No Claxton. Trade Duran for a pick. Beef stew back up center to Zach. No Brandon Ingram. Him and Cade basically does the same thing. Get Luke Kennard. Keep Ivey as him and Cade will feed ofF Zach. Fonteccio will be wide open Asar would be open to slash and dunk. Detroit we play Right Pick right. Big fellas should be on the block. Everyone is not Wemby or Joker. The game now just is throwing up 3’s. Looks so bad when you break the game down. Zach almost automatic 2 pts plus a foul. Let’s go Detroit.

Pistons fan here! Great, in-depth video! It brought up a lot of thoughts, so I apologize for the long read. I'll make them as digestible as possible. 1) Rumor has it that the Pistons might be a bit lower on Duren right now because his defensive effort was increasingly pitiful as the season went on. And while it's somewhat understandable because of his frequent injuries, he may have been one of the biggest factors in our defensive struggles as the season went on, because he was just letting guys blow by him without much of a fight in the second half of the season. There's talk that the Pistons may aggressively target Nic Claxton with a big contract and even move Stewart to the backup 5 position, because Stew's defense and floor spacing has worked well with Ausar for what we've seen. It may even be possible that in that trade scenario the Pistons would send Duren instead of Stewart. In which case, I think it may suffice to do Ivey, Duren, a 2027 1st and swapping the 5th overall pick this year for their 21st, if you even trade multiple firsts at all. That way you can probably use the 21st to pick up an older and more developed player in the draft like Tristan da Silva, or maybe Filipowski if he's still there. 2) I appreciate your comments about Ausar, and not just because he's my favorite player on the team. I also tend to see him as a future 2 on the team, because it ideally helps create a size/defensive advantage if we're able put good two-way forwards like Ingram and Fontecchio, for example, around him. 3) I love Jalen Smith, actually, and just mentioned him as an option to the fellow Pistons fans yesterday. Both Cade Cunningham and Ausar Thompson benefit tremendously from playing with bigs that stretch the floor. Heck, in the exceptionally brief time we were playing Mike Muscala off the bench with Ausar, before we waived Muscala for some reason, the two looked great together, and were torching the Bucks in one game (that we still lost because Cade was out and our starters were NOT good). We've been talking heavily about Valanciunas as an option too in the Pistons community, partly because he's got that connection with our new FO comprised of former Pels staff. 4) Speaking of the Pelicans connection, I think there's a good chance the Pistons would pursue a guy like Naji Marshall for wing depth, since they apparently attempted to acquire him at the deadline during the season. Considering Trajan Langdon drafted him, I feel like that chance increases further since he's a UFA now. I wouldn't even be surprised if Langdon makes a strong attempt at prying Jordan Hawkins away from NO, since he adores him. After Langdon left Brooklyn for NO, they had Brooklyn trade the newly drafted Nickeil Alexander-Walker, whom Langdon apparently scouted, over to NO. So it wouldn't be the first time he made an effort to bring "his guys" over. 5) I think the Duncan Robinson idea is alright, since it gives us some draft mobility and a decent veteran wing with basically an expiring contract. Thanks for all the hard work you put in, and congrats on this latest NBA work you secured! 🙌

I personally would rather try to develop the massive talent he is. That’s why changing the culture is so important. If you come in expecting to lose every night how much effort can you give? 2. Yeah Ausar is amazing. I would love to coach him! 3. Glad we agree on Smith, you are totally right that the spacing from big men really opened up Cade and the rest of the team! 4. I could see a Naji addition for sure! If y’all got Hawkins that would be dope. 5. Yeah it’s just nice to have a shooter, and ya have the money haha. Great work. Appreciate the effort you have put in here (probably more than the Pistons Front Office over the last few years). The Ingram move would divide fans, but I like it as he adds much needed shooting and help for Cade. As you mentioned, it would require an extension if paying this much for him. I like the signings of Smith and Nwora. Not sure on JV, doubt he comes to Detroit as a backup. There are probably cheaper options out there (Saric, Goga, Tillman). I would probably like another guard, as I'm not 100% sure on Sasser/Flynn/Grimes. Maybe a veteran PG or a solid combo guard like Melton.

I appreciate this thought experiment and seeing a realistic take on moving Detroit to a more competitive team rather than trying to go all out. 1.) My mindset for Detroit is to build around primarily Cade and Ausar while looking at everyone else as players to complement them. Cade is the biggest sure fire star we have and I believe Ausar is second on that list with his jump shot being his only real weakness. Also wings who are multifaceted are hard to come by, so Ausar should be a building block. I believe Ivey can be an all star or fringe all star level player if he develops his shooting, playmaking, and defense. I just don’t believe he’s a great fit next to Cade and Ausar because he’s streaky and needs the ball to be a factor. If he was an off ball threat I would consider keeping him but he would be on the trade block for me. Duren I also believe he can be an fringe all star at his potential, but my question for Duren is how long will it take for him to not be raw overall and to be good as a rim protector? Do you believe he can show improvement defensively to justify paying him an extension next year? Would that deal be worth it compared to using that money elsewhere and getting a cheaper big or a more established big? Duren would be a player I try to keep unless I see a deal that helps Ausar and Cade much better. 2.) If I’m Detroit, before the draft I’m sending an offer to Utah where we give them Ivey, Duren, #5, and a protected future FRP for Lauri Markkanen. I believe he’s the ideal piece next to Cade and Ausar long term. If they accept it then we focus on our SRP and move to free agency. I think Utah should consider this deal because it gives them another swing at a big, a top 5 guard in the draft 2 years ago, a top5 pick this draft, and a future protected pick. I don’t know what other team can offer draft picks and two really good young players like this. OKC can spam picks, but I’m not sure they’re willing to give up players on par with us. Spurs have picks, but they wouldn’t give up Vassel. Not guaranteed, but I think they would at least consider it. 3.) If Utah declines I would then offer #5 and Ivey for #2 and #26 from Washington. Washington I feel is a team who would be willing to trade down if they can remain in the top 5. Washington likely gets Sarr or Risacher if they stay at 2. They have plenty of forwards right now and need a big. If Risacher is available I feel they wouldn’t mind trading down and getting potentially Clingan at 5 plus Ivey. Detroit I can see do this because Risacher fits Ausar and Cade better. Risacher would come in and bring spacing. The core gets adjusted with a more cohesive team. 3.) I’m going to continue as if Lauri trade didn’t get accepted, but the Washington trade did 4.) I 1,000% agree with you on letting Fournier walk. His 19mil expiring may be useful, but I don’t think teams would want his deal to make any trade worth it. 5.) the BI trade I’m torn on. Looking at him in a vacuum would be a great fit on this team next to Cade, Ausar, Risacher, and Duren. The extension is what makes me hesitant. You would be giving him like 40-50+ mil per year when he has his injury issues. I also think we didn’t need to give up a future FRP when all reports are they don’t want to pay him. Detroit is one of the few teams that can just absorb his contract without adding much in the books for NOLA. I feel that uniquely gives Detroit leverage because I haven’t seen a deal where NOLA gets back anything close to a BI level player to counteract the value we provide. Maybe BI’s extension won’t be as expensive due to no other team having the money to pay him anywhere close? I’m not sure. 6.) I like the idea of going after Monk, Claxton, Gary Trent Jr, and Jalen Smith. Monk is likely gone from Sacramento because they can only pay him like 17mil. I feel we can offer 20-25mil on a 2+1. Claxton I would either just sign outright or do a sign and trade for him by giving Duren to Brooklyn. I just feel that worth Claxton he already figured out his game and you get an established guy next to Cade who is bring that defense now. I wish I had a Stew trade so Jalen Smith slid at the backup 5 spot. Gary Trent Jr is just additional bench scoring. 7.) I’ve been thinking about a trade with GSW where we give them Grimes for Moses Moody. Kerr seems to not trust Moody for some reason and I feel Detroit can better utilize his skill set. He would be a better fit next to Cade than Ivey was because of good scoring. GSW get a guy that Kerr should trust and who can be their bigger version of GP2. Also that’s one of the few ways they can upgrade without losing any rotational player. Maybe I like Moody more than most but I can see him being extremely good if given consistent minutes. My *hopefully* somewhat realistic team for Detroit would be: Starters: Cade, Monk, Ausar, Risacher, Claxton 2nd unit: Sasser, Moody, Trent Jr, Fontecchio, Smith 3rd unit: Brown Jr, #26 pick(Daron Holmes?), Umude, Flynn, a backup playmaker
@_AVC_
@_AVC_ Ай бұрын
Wow this is an awesome comment. Thank for both the well thought out ideas AND proper grammar haha! Hard to come by. I’ll answer your questions briefly but I’ll leave a link to my discord at the bottom to talk more. 1. Yes I agree to your evaluations and I think Duren is plenty worth keeping around. 2. If Lauri is available Detroit can definitely get him but I don’t think they are dealing him. 3. I think it is worth moving up in the draft, or at least more so than sitting at 5. 4. Glad we agree haha. 5. I see the BI trade as a symbol more than anything else to the team/organization that losing is no longer acceptable. 6. I like all those names for sure. I tended to avoid Trent/Monk here not for a lack of interest but because I want to prioritize Ausar at a guard spot and give Grimes a chance to show something because I like his potential. We want to show we can grow someone. 7. Moody is certainly interesting! I’ll still keep Grimes though. discord.gg/WuKyXk3pNe

@@pheralanpathfinder4897 so you’re saying Jaden Ivey and #5 for Kuzma and #2? I feel another asset has to be attached for Washington to say yes. My foundation for the deal is #5 and Ivey for #2 and another asset. That other asset makes sense for both sides to be the 26th pick or a pick in the future in 2026, 2028, or 2030 because those years Washington has at least two those years.

Interesting moves, thanks for the effort. I think it's a lot to give up for Ingram if the Pelicans really don't have the desire to extend him anyway, but maybe you're right and that's what it would take. I definitely want them to bring Tech back and don't mind most of the FA additions, but I do have two issues with the final lineup. First I don't think you can bring back both Sasser and Flynn as your backup PGs, if you're going to roll with Sasser as the backup you need to add a FA with some experience running an offense instead of Flynn. I don't mind some much older and much cheaper guy sort of like how you found Len. But Grimes and Ausar can't create at all, Sasser really struggled with it as well. Give them somebody who can run the offense a bit for at least the first quarter of the season. The other issue I have is you don't really have anybody who can guard a bigger PF with Tech at the 4 and Duren at C. Tech defended well but he's not as big as he seems and Duren was absolutely poor as a defender last season, even before he checked out mentally for the last month. If Ausar is going to guard the other teams' best perimeter player and your only interior defender is Duren, you'll get eaten alive. You'd have to turn Cade into a post defender maybe :| Also just want to say I appreciate that you actually have some Pistons knowledge instead of just looking at the record and a couple of articles and pretending for 30 minutes.

Dude, you dont actually know the pistons very well. Im a few minutes in and you say Duren has high defensive IQ? Are you serious? Did you watch the wet tissue back line defense we had? Also that Monty wasn't the one driving the lineup minutes? Bro, a cursory look at some of the beat writers would show you that the team had an intervention mid season to force Monty to start playing Ivey. He even admitted he didn't know that Ivey could play as a secondary ball handler. He was essentially clueless about the nuances of the team. I'm going to watch the rest of this video, but I'm sooo skeptical about what you're talking about right now. ❤

Your starters are Cade, Ausar, Fontecchio, Stewart, and Duren. Hayes, Sasser, Marshall, and Hendricks are your bench. The roles make sense, the roster is better, and you're on your way. Oh, and draft Buzelis or Williams.

@ishetrying
@ishetrying Ай бұрын
@@_AVC_ The reason you keep Hayes is high level court vision and passing. He's a backup point guard already because he's a great passer, unselfish, pushes the ball, keeps turnovers down, knows the offense, and plays defense. He's also an ideal partner for Marcus Sasser because he can defend the bigger guys while Sasser defends the Smaller guys. Hayes has struggled but it's not a product of poor effort it's just that he's shot badly. That can be fixed. The team has been terrible, as you note, and his role has been inconsistent. If you let him play point and do what he's good at he can contribute to winning and his shooting will come around. I wouldn't be surprised to see him in Denver, Phoenix, or Milwaukee if Detroit doesn't bring him back. If Detroit can keep Hayes they'll have three really high level passers and can use smart ball movement and player movement to make them tough to defend. Second, it seems like we disagree in key assessments. Isaiah Stewart is valuable because he can defend on the perimeter and move his feet well. His weakness is he's a little small inside and doesn't leap well enough to cover for it. Jalen Duren is a solid rebounder, willing passer, and a great athlete but he does not have good defensive instincts. His lack of rim protection was a big part of last seasons struggles. Jaden Ivey is a great track and field athlete with a terrible feel for the game and no NBA level skill. His ability to see the court is noticeably bad. Unlike the other two I hope to trade him very quickly because his value is only going to decrease.

Troy Brown Jr is unguaranteed, I don't think Detroit should keep him, he is not worth more than the minimum, so raw cap space should be more valuable. I do like what you did with him tho, Duncan Robinson would be great for Detroit, and maybe Miami could use TBJr. Detroit can't trade the 2027 1st (they can if they play with the protections) but they owe a future protected first to the Knicks, and untill that's resolved they can't trade future firsts, they could trade a 2031 1st I believe, but not 2027, but I think #5 + Stew and Ivey could be enough to get an expiring Ingram, I don't think a team as bad and as dysfunctional as Detorit should be trading any more future 1sts to be honest. One free agency move I would love for Detroit to make is sign Naji Marshall. He never made too much money in his career and he proved to be a legit playoff rotation piece, and he should be cheap and he is a winger with a skillset that would be great next to Cade (he plays hard on defense, can shoot, and can handle the ball). I also love De'Anthony Melton, another free agent that should be cheap, plays great PoA defense has a high BBIQ and would fit perfectly next to Cade (or anyone fwiw). And I would love for us to bring Umude and Evbuomwan back for the minimum/2 way as 3rd stringers But overall I like the video, you're knowledgeable and well informed. I particularly love what you said about Monty Williams. Imo he quit on the team because he was forced to do a few things against his will (start Ivey and play Stew at the 4) also I think the players quit on him because of the whole Ivey situation.

@@_AVC_ For me it's clear that something happened in the locker room in the game against Portland (IIRC). Detroit was cruising through the game, destroying Portland, and they came back different from the half time, they lost the game, and the team was never the same after that. Later in the season there were reports that Gores and Weaver talked to Monty and told him to start Ivey. I also remember a twitter from Duren with a picture of him, Cade, Ausar and Ivey saying something along the lines "same vibe". It's quite obvious that Monty lost the locker room to me, but I am just trying to connect the dots. Nola was dumb enough to tell everyone they arent giving i gram 50m and to be honest i dont love it either .with cade getting 45m per or so and having some injury issues i dont love 95m per in injury prone players . The moves to make this year imo is take lavines salary on im a salary dump and maybe gain an asset . His 43m per for 3 years isnt that bad anymore and hes a better scorer than ingram . Hes a good shooter gets cade a true no 2 and provides some spacing . Then im getting a defensive center maybe claxto. If the price is right if not just a backup level . Thats it thats all i do this year . That allows players to grow with the additional spacing and scoring . Hopefully the center can teach duren and we get a wing with superstar upside in 2025 lotto then we are ready to make aome big moves

So 2 years longer more money and lavine asset wise for all intents an purposes is free at worst . If chicago wont play ball i try an overpay monk on a short deal like 3 for 90 maybe . Lavine in my scenario is a stop gap . After that contract gets down to the final year if hes scoring even 20 a game which he can do in his sleep then i flip him for additional assets . Sorry bro. Not liking any of this. Ingram has been mentioned to detroit and i really hope it doesn’t happen. He’s decent but he’s injury prone and overpaid. He’s basically an injury prone Jeremy grant but without the solid D. Both are nice players but they need the ball in their hands too much and for too long. We need athletic shooters who can move with the ball and keep the offense flowing. BI is a black hole when the ball goes to him. I don’t see him fitting well with cade and company, just as grant didn’t either. Also, while those assets might be what it takes to acquire a guy like BI, why on earth would a team like ours who is light years away even from the play-in, trade 2 young assets AND 2 first round picks for a guy at his level? He’s not elite like that and i don’t think he fits as i said. We need to be stockpiling 1st rounders, not trading them away. While this is a weak draft i can see there will be a player at 5 who would be a very good piece for us. We need more 1st rounders not just to draft players (we have less talent than some realize) but to give us future flexibility in trades. I don’t see BI as a guy who is worth that large of an investment for a team like ours. If we were 1 or 2 players away, maybe. But even then like i said, i don’t think he’s a good fit. We need to stockpile shooters and versatile athletes who help space the floor and keep the offense moving. We literally have maybe 4 or 5 guys worth keeping. To put so much in 1 acquisition that we’re then forced to take on a bunch of ‘leftovers’ to fill out the roster is not smart long term or short term. We are not acquiring top free agents so we need to draft and trade well. I don’t think this is it. At all. Sorry for the long post. I appreciate the time and thought you put into your video but i could not be less enthused about your ideas though. Lol peace bro.

@@_AVC_ so i don’t think a move like that sends the message you’d want it to. There are other good players we could acquire who play hard and FIT and could help contribute to winning basketball, but who also don’t cost so much. Plus acquiring him doesn’t send the message that losing is no longer ‘OK’. Because if we take on such a huge contract on a guy who i don’t think fits, we lose future flexibility to actually build a solid all around team long term. It feels like the Blake griffin acquisition again, even though BI is obviously younger. Both are big names though with enormous contracts and skill sets that are not conducive to team basketball. What happens when we owe picks and have no assets to acquire more MUCH needed talent? This proposal puts way too many eggs in one basket and severely limits our future flexibility, both salary cap-wise and just from an asset point of view.

@@aaronmedeiros9088 I think we just moved this year and next years pick, and most of if not all the salary comes off the books by the time any decisions need to be made with all the younger players so I’m a little confused by that logic. As far as the message sending then. Why doesn’t it send a message? The argument was just we could do it but do it better. You certainly could try to say that sure but I don’t know why it wouldn’t send that message. I personally love the fit as well. Like some of the work I’m doing in the league right now revolves around finding ways to have bigger and more dynamic lineups. I’m not saying you’re necessarily wrong I’m just curious. I know you mentioned something about him being a ball stopper but I’m curious to hear you expand on that.

@@_AVC_ i thought you said a 2027 pick but in any event, we already owe a future 1st to NY. Even if the protections lead to it never conveying, we are restricted in our future arsenal of picks and plus there’s the Stephien rule that limits trades of picks we can make. To also owe one to the pelicans is not smart IMO. Why do we want to restrict our future flexibility in trades and the draft? We are light years away from contending so making moves that are putting a LOT of assets into one acquisition makes no sense IMO. BI is a big name and that might get people excited. But what happens when we still suck and when we have little to no future assets to keep building our team? The hype will wear off really quickly. Why not use cap space to acquire more reasonable contracts or even to take on a ‘bad’ contract for a year or 2 in exchange for an ADDITIONAL 1st rounder? As for BI, he is primarily a 1 on 1 player. He dribbles a lot and does not move the ball well. Think back to Jeremy grant but only worse. Good player but not very good at sharing the ball IMO. When the ball goes to him, it stops moving and the offense comes to a standstill. Plus he’s very injury prone. Look, he can be a good player but i just don’t think the fit or the cost for acquiring him is worth it when i do a cost-benefit analysis.

@@aaronmedeiros9088 Totally hear ya on all those points. So I’ll leave ya with two thoughts to ponder over. The first one is just player development in general. I think you might be confusing my idea of sending a message. The idea with that is to set a standard for the organization over time. Start making winning oriented moves consistently until it becomes the standard. This move alone doesn’t get it done but it sends the signal to listen up. It’s something these smaller market/less desirable locations have to do to find success in today’s league. Something I am currently involved with as well actually 👀. If ya just keep stockpiling high lottery picks ya waste the talent you already have on the court. Eventually you gotta win some games or you’ll go nowhere. The second thing is player evaluation. So one of the things I teach younger scouts/consult on for teams is asking questions. Coaches, players, commenters lol, all like to say “This guy does this or that.” But the why is often left out. Why does BI have the ball so much, why doesn’t he take more 3s, why is he settling for xyz shot? Those are things I actually have on my official assessments of him for the team I work for. If you want to maybe take a crack at those! Food for thought and happy to walk through em.

@@_AVC_ Ingram is alright but I’m not giving up a boat load for a player that his team will most likely give up for nothing because they can’t afford him, and I just didn’t care for none of the free agent signings besides Tech and Nwora.
