Landscape astrophotographer Alyn Wallace ( / alynwallace ) discusses the devastating impact of light pollution, not just on the night sky but on nature as well. As the human population explodes and towns and cities grow, light pollution is growing at an alarming rate and is largely going unchecked. Not only is the luminous fog drowning out the stars and our view to the rest of the universe, but it also causes disruptions in circadian rhythms and the balance of ecosystems.
Alyn Wallace is a landscape and timelapse astrophotographer based near the Brecon Beacons National Park in South Wales. He was featured on the BBC Two “Moonshot” documentary to mark the anniversary of the moon landings, where he set out to take his ultimate image of the moon, and celebrate Wales’s Dark Sky Reserves. Alyn's work has been recognised by NASA, National Geographic, the BBC and The Times, among others. Alyn shares his knowledge through Astrovlogs on his KZfaq channel and hosting astophotography workshops in Wales and Europe. His work can be found at: alynwallacephotography.com/. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

Alyn once made a video where he talked about some of his struggles in life and how he found his own personal peace through photography. Having gone through similar things, I found great inspiration in his words which led to me finding my own solace in photography. He genuinely touched my life and will be missed by many.

I find the clinical blue rich LEDS very uninspiring, soul sapping, overly intrusive and artificial looking light. They might be considered safe but they are not very healthy. Nature is not an office block. thanks for the talk dude.

Also, when it's cloudy the artificial light reflects off of the clouds and makes everything even brighter. You literally see the beams of reflected light from the clouds shining through the gaps in the curtains. Awful!

From the uploading of the video till the date it is just 57 comments mean no body really concern of this topic but many are concerned of the opposite. I was interested on this topic as I was living in the desert region after living in a tropical country. I never see a dark sky in the desert region in addition to that street bulbs were glowing even at daytime. I was just observing if not have time to do a statistical research to prove that trees are growing well where there is enough darkness and mostly the trees grown on road sides are not growing well. My reasoning was the light pollution and I did not have an opportunity to bring to the notice of concerned personnel to switch off the street light at least for two to four hours (12 - 4) when there will be less traffic on the road. Additionally traffic police movement can arrange to cope with emergency situations.

Alyn, I used to live in the middle of Salisbury Plain and we had some very good dark skies. On a clear night you could easily see the Milky Way. The only problem, was like most places in UK whenever there was a major astronomical event, we were clouded out or frozen out, especially during the Winter months. Now I'm retired, I have solved even that problem, no light polution, no cloudy skies, no freezing cold nights - I now live in La Palma in the Canary Islands, tbe World's first Dark Sky reserve.

Given we are are stuck with the lights we have what are the options? Filters, shields, dimming, part night lighting?
@ayjanu
@ayjanu 3 жыл бұрын
@@peterwoolliams1283 Shielding the tops and sides of light fixtures is a good start - putting some sort of cone or cylinder over them so that all of the light points towards the ground. Dimming the power helps too - reducing the wattage. Motion sensors for outdoor lights would also help, so that way the lights turn off when they're not needed.

The transition to LEDs was driven by a cost saving, there will be no cost saving by changing the temperature of the LED so i think sadly this will take a long time to take effect.

I agree with all of this. If one wants to accomplish the necessary change to human behavior the focus should not really be on sea turtles or bugs, or birds, but on rich folks' children. How does the light pollution negatively effect the children of people who have money? Rich people are not hippies. Rich people control the laws.

From my personal observation from a lonely island of cyclades greece That i saw every night for some years the milky way,I believe that since 1995 that they had put everywhere public light,the clobal system made that because they had problem of the working of artificial intelligence mind control programmes at the period of the nights.Because the space sattelites they didnt had total clear vision of the europe and west population generally.

Money… the damn key to freedom.... if you haven't it, you can basicly not travel, experience, try and buy, you can not really take part in society and you have to do day after day something most likely boring, stressful or just madness .... just to buy enough to live... so you hate almost every day of your life to have the freedom to live.... i dont know... but thats is not what i thought of freedom... and, i have the opportunity to live in germany, with (old, almost broken laptop) internet and broccoli with water, warmth, security, health insurance, friends and family.... but.... when i look up at night .... there are sometimes five or six stars visible.... just because..... advertisement or lightening builings or other bright nonsence.... nothing against streetlights and the useful stuff.... its sad.... i want to see the stars
