On November 1, 1755, a massive earthquake took place off the coast of Portugal. Its impact would forever change the face of Europe.

Great artwork. I've just returned from Southern Portugal and that area also got hit by the 1755 earthquake and the tsunami that followed. It is far more than 150 km south of Lisbon, yet it too suffered huge destruction and massive loss of life. From here on, I will no longer be referring to the "Great Lisbon Earthquake" but the "Great Portugal Earthquake".

The Algarve suffered a lot too...but Lisbon was one of the biggest cities in europe in those times and the very large destruction caused great impact at international level

Not-so-fun fact: The Portuguese king was so traumatised by the event that he developed acute claustrophobia that stayed with him for the rest of his life. He and much of the royal court essentially lived in a series of tents for the remaining 22 years of his reign as he had refused to live inside a walled building ever again.

LOL 🤣🤣 who told you that?? Lisbon still being one of the most important cities in catholic world. Habe you ever heard about Patriarchate of Lisbon? The patriarchal church, which was the most luxurious and expensive church in 18th century Europe, was destroyed. The impressive main altar of the church of S. Dominic was destroyed and also other church but some of the most impressive resisted...Igreja de S. Roque, Igreja do Menino de Deus (amazing) Igreja de S. Cristovão. Igreja da Misericordia..a lot of them resisted. In fact, there still aren't many European capitals with more impressive churches than Lisbon

I'm an ex-muslim atheist, I remember in 1980 10th of October a Friday, during the Friday prayer a 7 earthquake hit the city of El-Asnam ( renamed Chlef for reason will explain later on) and I still remember people were saying maybe the Imam made a mistake while reciting the Quran, others blaming on women for not wearing the hijab. The quake wreck havoc an destroyed the major part of the city. few months later the Algerian authorities decided to rename the city from Elsnam which in arabic litteraly means idols to Chlef which is the name of a close river, the reason was purely religious superstition thinking that this name is provoking 'god' so changing it would be a 'wise' step to please this god who decided to destroy the city and kill innocent people

As a Catholic it's probably a good thing it did happened on all souls day as most people had gone to confession and died in a state of Grace. God works in His mysterious ways. Often times we say that the best people are taken from us and the evil doers remain to destroy. Maybe God allows this to give the evil doers to realize their mistakes and come to repentance. But I'm not a theologian, but surely we will this happening on a daily basis.

Sir, our God allowed his son to be killed in a holy day too - the easter. And it was also a disaster for most that saw it. But I would say the true voyage we need to do to find Him is not in the infinite space. It is in our ordinary and aparentily useless life. For who see these bad events with the eyes of faith, it is possible to recognize that God can take the best even from the greatest evil 🇵🇹🇧🇷🇻🇦

In my personal oppinion I think it was Karma on the Portuguese people for all the harmed they done to other cities with direct gun power. For example: Calicut and Mombasa. Just like any other Nation out there has gotten karma back, the Portuguese got it directly from god. Not to mention they were the main reason why so many Africans were enslaved.

no bc as a muslim (a monotheistic religion) ill give my opinion despite not being catholic 😭we don't actually believe that there is punishment or reward in this life, god never said so, but some extremists try to politicize islam and try to say how bad things that happen to others, even other muslims, are "punishments from god" for doing bla bla bla. it's a strictly political thing for islam bc god said in the quran that there is no punishment in this life, only good or bad and god does all. in islam we see this life as a test and then the afterlife (heaven/hell) as your real life, and the bad things that happen to you are struggles that test your loyalty to god and how strong you are. god said in the quran that he gives no soul with any burden large enough to not bear, so every person has a chance to go to heaven as much as any other. those who are murdered go immediately to heaven, and people who have had close people die and are in pain get rewarded in the afterlife. if you die while worshipping god that is a very noble thing to have happen to you (but it isn't encouraged to try and get yourself killed while praying bc that's basically suicide which gets you into hell) so yeah 💀 also your renderings are SO AMAZING i literally cannot how does this channel have only 1k subscribers

You see, God does not demand or request worship or adoration same as mountains or a roaring sea does not. God demand belief, God ask we trust in Jesus Crist and His sacrifice for us. Once you belive adoration comes naturally like when you are on the rocky massive alps peaks and you can't stop thinking and saying "how beautiful and majestic this sight is, and the breeze and the purfumes in the air and the singing of the birds". God is not an egomaniac, is not the villain of cartoons that strive to be accepted. God want us to enjoy and fully embrace His Glory for our sake, not His. To adore Saints, Mary, images, man of power....all this is against His person. I do not thing God and do not belive God caused the earthquake, like He does not want evil to exist, but He is a Sovereing God none the less, and He has power over evil, and so He let it happen for our good, like a father let the child fall from the bike while learning, even if hos knee will peel off.

Voltaire turned a blind to the fact that the one spreading evil is not God, but the lost angel. What's with the human need for blaming God for everything, except for the perfect scapegoat? God uses nature to fulfill His purposes, but stopped punishing people like this long ago until His day comes.

It's disappointing to see this video marred by a glaring lack of nuance and an abundance of anti-Catholic sentiment, reminiscent of Reddit-tier atheism. The claims made are largely based on hearsay and a questionable understanding of historical context, particularly considering the anti-Catholic bias that underlies much of the commentary, giving off the likely American background aura. The Church's stance on science, far from being opposed to it, has historically been one of patronage and support. It's unfortunate that this video fails to acknowledge this fact and instead perpetuates harmful American stereotypes about Catholicism. Since the Church is a millennar institution, you can simply refer back to documents and communications at the time to see what their instance was on the event. Despite the production value, the content of this video falls short of the standards I expect from a well-researched and thoughtful discussion. I hope that future videos will strive to provide a more balanced and accurate representation of the topics they cover.
@CharlotteSWeb-oh7ou8 ай бұрын
You say anti-Catholic like it's a meaningful or bad thing. You also amusingly rail against stereotypes and yet wield the looming specter of the "reddit athiest" as an insult. The modern Catholic Church is a major backer of anti-LGBT sentiment, being the origin of propaganda terms like "gender ideology" and funding anti-trans misinformation hate groups like SEGM. The funding for science has always been increasingly incidental, and your claim to caring about nuance is undercut by your lack of nuance. Not to mention that "harmful stereotypes about Catholocism" is a vile appropriation of the language of the oppressed to defend an a mass system of bigotry and oppression. No one is "harmed". You are not "harmed". It's not only a historical fact that the destruction of such a devout city as Lisbon was a major factor in the Enlightenment in the rest of Europe, it is also a fact that the Catholic Church is a colonizing predatory organization that deserves to be spoken of derogatorily. Silence, Papist.
