The Emperor and his court have been driven back by the onslaught of barbarian forces laying waste to the Balkans during the Gothic war. Now it has come down to this... the crown jewel of the east is under siege... God help us

The walls of Constantinople were LITERALLY impossible to penetrate ... in 674 the arabs didn't even manage to go through the walls after 4 vain years of siege... As for the desolated walls only Mehmet II's canons were able to penetrated them ... after 700 hundred of defence and 23 sieges sustained... only one word to say to the walls of Constantinople: they're EPIIIIC!!!!

The city was sacked during the 4th crusade, due to the fact the empire was too corrupt and weak. If they actually had decent amount of defenders they could pushed back the crusaders :(
@theophileburtz1624
@theophileburtz1624 9 жыл бұрын
Indeed the city was corrupt but the sack of Constantinople wasnt due too the lack of defenders . The Crusaders , too pay the Venetian ships to make the crusade needed to take Constantinople because of an old rivalry between the venetian dogme and the emperor of Constantinople.After having sacked the city to the ground and killed thousands of innocent people the crusaders were finally excommunicated by the pope.

you both totally dont understand what happened king alexios of byzantine empire promised crusaders to give them money IF they helped them take the throne they actually helped him but then alexios didnt gave them money then alexios was removed from king by his rivals so crusaders were left at constadinopole with out money,ships and the promise that alexios gave them at the end they wanted their money and constadinopole fell
@Kale_Kale
@Kale_Kale 9 жыл бұрын
Alexios IV did try to give them money. The imperial treasury just did not have enough to pay his promise. He did raise some money to try to give to the crusaders but it was not enough. When he was getting unpopular with the greek cititzens, Alexios IV sent Alexios Doukas to reconcile with the crusaders. Instead Alexios Doukas imprisoned Alexios IV and his father Isaac II and most likely killed them. He was then crowned Alexios V.

I love thes kinds of huge sieges but I absolutely HATE the fact that catapults can destroy entire sections of walls just by throwing a few rounds at it. That way nobody stays on top of the wall and I want people storming walls with defenders trying their hardest to shoot them/ fight them once they have made it on top. gates should be focus points since they are weak points in the walls but nooooo just shoot here for a sec and look at that we made our own gate! this way you can never have those minas tirith or blackwater bay type siege battles...sieges just become city brawls since the walls never are defended.

The Man To be fair they try to balance that by greatly limiting the ammunition of the catapults.
@Sonic9505
@Sonic9505 9 жыл бұрын
The Man I tend to think of it as a touch of realism and game play balance. While battles to take the gate of a city are epic, they require a lot of man power. There's a reason why gates are often the most well defended areas, as you said, they're the weak spots. And honestly, making you're own gate has a sect of epic as well. The attackers rushing forward to try and use their advantage, while the defenders scramble to plug the gap.

In real life when you know the enemy has to be in front of you while you are defending the wall. And you see an enemy flag in the centre of the city. @@chargingnoisesintensify6335 generally in warfare when the enemy has control over the logistics of the enemy the enemy loses. This is because ofcourse the unit doesnt get any vital resources (like food, water, ammunition etc) So you could in this case fight on and try to get hold of your logistics again or surrender. No other option is available because that is complete self destruction. Only a human with a mental health issue will carry on (people always have feelings and are not machines) Sometimes even armys surrender wirhout even losing a single soldier. Just because they felt there was no sense in fighting This could be possible in a situation from genghis khan. This is where Warhammer really dropped the ball. Sieges. They had the chance to use grand fantasy-cities of the same scale as this, and then they opt for a single wall and a few streets... And the laziness in animations when towers and walls crumble... They never had a problem showing it before! Why now... *Sigh*

They've finally made Sieges epic enough that they can live up to the Epic apocallyptic feeling that the historical accounts of sieges inspire. The sieges in Shogun had some of that but THIS is amazing. The Theodisian Walls have such a massive aura to them, I love it !!! All we need now is for Computers to get powerfull enough so we can recreate Battles full scale and actually fully man those walls with 10000 Warriors. I'm Lookin forward to it.

Seeing Constantinople's walls treated like paper is absurd. Not even the Turks with their cannons could take those walls down long enough to send an army through them. The Turks got in by a door that was left unattended because of a lack of troops. In this game, a few rocks take down the most powerful walls in the history of mankind?! As Ironfoot said in the "Battle of the 5 armies" when the Orcs showed up, "Oh, come on!!"

@catcalliope3737
@catcalliope3737 9 жыл бұрын
I don't think it ruined the siege, it added a serious and important strategic element to the battle. As implemented it doesn't make much sense realistically, but it's not much of a stretch to imagine that by holding the victory point they achieved some other strategic goal-- like taking the emperor hostage. I definitely agree that it makes little sense but it adds a much appreciated strategic element to the game. If Oakley/Indy hadn't concentrated all their forces on one side, they could have opposed the taking of the point, whereas the enemy chose to concentrate on the point as an objective. IMHO it made this battle more interesting than the pike v pike standoff it could have devolved into otherwise with neither side willing to risk casualties. All this being said I think timer countdown should be blocked by having any units in its area, not just a majority. That's an anticlimactic end.
@catcalliope3737
@catcalliope3737 9 жыл бұрын
That would be pretty sweet... There's a lot of ways CA could come up with adding a new and potent strategic element to the game and make it more flavorful than this.

Such an awesome battle but capture points are still bullshit. Taking a point like that shouldn't be an automatic win if they hold it for a couple minutes. At the MOST it should be a severe moral debuff but when the defenders still have decent numbers and especially if their general is still alive, the battle should go on.

I personally think I more organic way to integrate the victory point capture feature is to, instead of causing the defending army to instantly lose the game once the timer runs out, have the defending army suffer debuffs in morale/melee defense/attack and have the debuffs become more and more severe as time goes on. That way the defending army would still stand a chance, and the attacker can't use cheap tactics (not saying this game was cheap, it was pretty epic) to capture the victory with a single unit, and then win even if they are severely outnumbered in the end.

Regardless, the enemy made huge mistakes by separating their forces like they did. But you guys took advantage of the error and gave them a hellish fight they probably thought would be easy! Maximus Decimus Meridius is the reigning authority on this topic. It's quite incredible how quickly he's made a name for himself and become very relevant to the community. I also think it's really cool how THFE, Darren, Maximus, Sun Jetzu and some of the others have not tried to move into the already crowded space of LP's and have specialized into their own niches.

How do you get this type of strategy out of this game? Im pretty nooby at total war games despite having damn near every title. When i play though it seems like the ai always just clumps up and charges randomly.

I feel as though this would have been more interesting at escalation I, because then the ERE probably would have had a better chance. 3v2 on escalation II seems kind of easy for the attackers

Perhaps breaking the defectors instead of the archers would have allowed you to move in earlier and contest the point.

16:12 - in real life, you would still be able to flank those pikemen, as you would send your men through the buildings, arriving at their left flank. It is a shame that buildings are instead an obstacle in Total War, as historically, city battles would take place even in narrow places between the buildings.
