Here is a first impression video of a Dialtune snare drum I recently purchased. I bought the drum used and it is the Black Nickel over brass model. The size is 14"x 6.5" which is the only size they make right now. This drum is unique in that it tunes up with two dials (one for the top head and one for the bottom) and no tension rods are present. This makes head changes fast and tuning even faster. I explore the drum and some try different heads before taking it over to the drum set.
The heads include:
A Remo Ambassador (stock head)
A Remo Fiberskin Diplomat
A Remo Rennaissance
A Remo Power Stroke
I also play the drum with a full drum set with the Powerstroke and Fiberskin Diplomat heads.
If you get bored and want to skip around here are the time stamps:
Time Stamps
0:00 Introduction and Remo Ambassador Head
12:48 Remo Fiberskin Diplomat
18:12 Calf Head Failure
20:19 Remo Rennaissance
24:01 Remo Powerstroke
25:48 Remo Powerstroke at the drum set
33:56 Remo Fiberskin Diplomat at the drum set
The drums used in this video are Craviotto stacked Private Reserve.
The sizes are:
Bass Drum 20x15
Toms 10x8 and 12x8
Floor Tom 14x14
The Cymbals are:
22" Paiste Traditional Light Ride
18" 1950's K crash/ride with rivets
16" Paiste Traditional Thin Crash
Masterwork 24" Swish/China with Rivets
Sabian 13" HH Regular Hi Hats
Mics are two Sennheiser MKH 800 overheads and an AKG D112 on the bass drum.

Wow...I really like that Remo at 21:30. Even the nearly dead sound when you were taking it off. Just personally like that flavor profile. This drum seems like a lot of fun

This has became one of my bucket list drums to own. (Along with notable mentions to a Craviotto Maple, Tama Bell brass, Bo Swanger copper, Black Beauty brass, Outlaw Padauk, Black Panther brass, Y&T solid Mahogany. ) Ive got about 30 snares in my studio to choose from (each tuned differently) so I don't have to constantly change tunings between songs. Just grab a different snare and go. Time is money in the studio, and paying an engineer gets expensive quickly. So a dialtune snare is definitely going to be a welcome addition. Id be willing to let go of a few nice snares to afford one, if only for the ease of tuning alone.

I have one and love. It does the job of five snares with the quick tuning ability. It can go from a deep power snare to a high pitched funk drum and anything in between.

The snare reminds me of the old Arbiter Auto tune drums from the 70's. Blessings.

This drum is built much better than the Arbiters. I had one and it was prone to problems with the tuning mechanism. You also could not do the individual adjustments which is what makes this drum so attractive for me.

You might be interested to learn that I originated the idea you see now as Dialtune's tuning system. You can find examples within the videos on my channel. 12 years ago.

I am really interested in how the tests with the orchestra go. When these first came out, my thoughts went straight to an orchestral setting. You're probably the best person to make a video on this given your experience. Also, Kevlar? Yeah, I wanna hear about that too.

The George Jetson Snare, or the Inspector Gadget Snare, or the Twilight Zone Snare; whatever my analogy, I think that this is one Kool Snare and it sounds really wonderful to me. Thanks Rick for this great lesson on the Dialtune Snare!

Rick, Thanks for the “road test” on this drum. Very interesting drum, especially with its tuning benefits. Given the price and the weight, I’m pretty sure I’ll never own one. It seemed as you installed the PS head, that it didn’t really seat completely flat on the bearing edge before you sat the rim on. Is it possible that this might take a more vintage dimensioned head? Also, the tuning dials seemed very easily adjusted. Is there any locking of the tension setting, or does the tension friction keep it adequately positioned? One last note. As you adjust the snare side head, do you also adjust snare wire tension.

Hi Fred No locking mechanism on the dials. I zero both of them out to very loose when I change the heads so I have a good starting point. The knobs have a feel as they get tighter and it's similar to the chain drum timpani mechanisms my timpani teacher Fred Hinger used to use. I am learning to get very fast tunings with the feel of the knobs. I have been playing with this thing non stop since I got it and I like it more and more everyday. It turns out that I was not loosening the top head enough so thats why it was difficult to get the head off and on. I will soon do a follow-up video and elaborate on that and other things but right now this drum is an absolute revalation.

@@rickdior Thanks for your reply. There is no question that the fast tuning capability opens up a lot of doors, especially on the fly.

It looks like die cast hardware so it's hard to believe the thing could be out of round; but who knows it might be. Stranger things have happened. Maybe that's the reason the person sold it to you. Check the bottom hoop to see if it does the same thing. Call their customer service. See if they'll replace the hoop.

Rick I've head you say before that if you were to suggest one snare drum to your students it would be a 5.5x14 wooden snare. What would you suggest for a second snare - 6.5x14 metal?

Isn’t it only needed to loosen the one knob that controls tension on the top head to remove the head ?
@rickdior
@rickdior 2 жыл бұрын
Yes that's right but I zero the drum out and then bring both heads up together to get a good starting point. Then you can adjust each head from there.
