In Tulsa for 2024 I think it was 95% and lots of people I talked to said "its only a 5% difference. It can't be that much better." I tried to tell them they are wrong and that being in totality is something truly magical. My dad and I drove to arkansas so we could be in totality. We saw totality in 2017 but it was slightly cloudy and the difference between no clouds and slightly cloudy was insane. Seriously it needs to be a life goal for everyone to see an eclipse in totality.

for the 2024 one, I live where it will be a partial solar eclipse at 99.66%. rip. but hey, at least it will be the closest to 100% in my life so far.

Yeah I don’t understand how you can be just okay with 99.66% when you can literally walk a mile or so and be in 100%. But that’s your loss

That’s ridiculous. This was a life-changing experience, easily worth driving 20 minutes, or even 200 minutes, to experience. I’d been through 98%, and just saw 100% last week, having driven an hour. There is NO COMPARISON. 100% was MUCH better than 98.

That was a good idea to get to the cross paths of both eclipses...you were one of the very small percentage of people to do so... Hopefully the one in 2024 won't be cloudy there!

I saw over two and a half minutes of totality in the great American eclipse, it was spectacular. Waiting patiently for the one in 2024. Great video, thanks.

Thanks for this, preparing for the annular eclipse in a few days and this let me know the 80% I'd see in town wouldn't be much different from the 90% I'd have to travel for.

Cool video, I wish I would have seen this before the eclipse earlier this year, we were in a 98% coverage area and it was a lot brighter than I thought it would be.

This is one of the most informative videos I have seen. Excellent demonstration. Thank you for posting. I wish I had done more research earlier to learn this. I live close to Louisville, but I won't be able to drive to the path due to work. When I first learned about the eclipse happening, the main headline that I saw was, "Will be visible from all parts of the US" so I didn't think much about the path of totality until recently. If I had realized how unique totality is then I would have planned ahead better. Maybe I can be more mobile in 2024. You say that the 2024 won't be very long; any idea how long it might be?

I could only imagine how the 2 differs when you see the 2024 eclipse. San Antonio was split between 95ish percent and 100% for about a minute or two.

They said we had 90% in CT for the 2024 one. News channels hyping it up! So I'm thinking 90% dark. That's good! Nope! Was barely darker than normal. Complete dud! I would have drove the 4 hours north for 100% totality. Had I known! ☻️

My wife did an 18 vid of me watching the eclipse and using my solar glasses. It showed clearly how 99.99999% was different than 100%. No comparison. First you saw me and then you don't. 18 secs.

I had a 77% totality, but it happened at school. But my classmates said the sky was a bit opaque, meaning the partial elipse I had, was about to reach maximum (which is 77%)

Thank you!! Any chance I could get a comparison video from you between Portland, OR and Brownsville, OR? Portland would make life easier re. horrific traffic, saving a lot of money and not having to deal with staying put in a heatwave in a tent for 3 or 4 days...but it will have only a 99.3% eclipse. Brownsville is just within the borders of the path of totality (I think the eclipse is only 30 seconds or so long there) but it would be cheaper, less crowded and would allow us to escape more easily as first on the freeway to where we're going.

Looks like Portland will get a 98.86% eclipse (not TOTALITY = Day) and Brownsville (I had to pick the lat & long for it) is just about the same. May I suggest shadowandsubstance.com/2017/States/Oregon/Oregon.html for help finding totality.

There Is no comparison between a partial and a full eclipse. Cameras cannot do a full eclipse justice. Only the Naked Eye can do a full eclipse justice.

Great video, all very true.. I saw 2017 from west of Columbia SC and 2024 from near the center of the line of totality in central Ohio. About 2:20 of totality in 2017 and 3:43 in 2024. What surprised me the most was how close you have to be to totality for it to get dark at all, really. Both times, 30 to 45 seconds before totality, it was light. It really is true that a matter of a mile or less can make the difference between darkness and light. 95%? No. 99%? Nope. We had 95% around D.C. in 1970.... total dud, not even as dark as an overcast day. Took 8 hours each way to see 100% in 2017 and 2024 and having done it twice, and experienced it, Id drive twice the distance if I could see another one in my lifetime. If you're young, PLAN ahead and go see it in 2045! Take good equipment.

Thanks and very true. I was 12 for the 1970 DC eclipse. My Dad had the foresight to drive somewhere to see it at 100%. My wife and I also saw this one from outside St. Louis and the '24 from Texas. So cool to see 100%. My wife actually took an 18 sec vid of me that shows me seemingly in day and then night. All in 18 seconds. Totally cool.

The sky will darken but as I said, unless you go out every 15 to 20 mins, you may not notice due to relatively fast pupil dilation.

The moon has nothing to do with this event we have two clues.. the first clue is that we can see other planets thru the area that is supposed to be the moon and the second clue is the length of time we see a totality, the moon would have to stop its orbit and make a long pause and then resume orbiting..

the moon is literally looking like 5% bigger than the sun during perigee, they are not exactly the same size and if it was apogee 5% smaller than the sun then it would be a annular and if they were exactly the same size than you think, it would obviously last very little to no seconds like a hybrid one in a only 1-kilometer wide shadow on japan around the 40's.
