I think an important thing you might be missing is the implication of Quick Draft attracting worse drafters, and Premier Draft attracting better drafters. Thus my expected draft wins is quite high in Quick Draft (typically 6-3), but in Premier Draft, against those better opponents, it drops down to about 50% (3-3). Different expected wins changes the draft type comparisons.

Hi great video, but one issue. For many players, the question isn't how to use our gems, but how to use our gold? While you are right that using gems to go into a Quick Draft is value even at zero wins, it's not value if using gold (which I suspect most of us are going to use). 5,000 gold buys five packs, which is slightly better than the four packs and 50 gems you get at zero wins. One thing to note in Quick Draft there is also a % chance get a bonus pack, from 20% to 40% depending on how many wins, at zero wins, you get a 20% to get a free pack. So if we factor in all that in, the cost per gems at zero wins using gold is 224 gems per pack (4 packs, plus .25 for 50 gems (200 gems is one pack, so 50 gems is 1/4 a pack), plus .2 for the 20% chance = 4.45 in pack value, 1,000 gems to buy five packs (converting the gold to gems) gets you to "224 gems per pack", this is to give an apples to apples comparison to your 175 per gem pack using gems to enter the event. (using gems to enter is 25% cheaper than using gold to enter a draft, 5000 gold vs 750 gems, the 5000 gold is equal to 1000 of gem value since 5000 gold and 1000 gems gets you five packs worth) My formula for evaluating things on Arena is 1,000 gold = 200 gems = $1 dollar = 1 pack. So entering drafts with gems is a great value since they give you a 25% discount than if you use gold to enter. Using gold to enter means you have to do even better to break even. Question then is, if I am a F2F player, how best to earn gems with my gold? Quick draft seems pretty good since their is a lower cost to enter which means I can play more times, which means I can increase my chances of going deep in an event...IMO.

Something to note for pure drafters. Since premier drafts are double the cost of a quick draft, the cost of the entry ticket should be baked into your considerations when doing premier drafts purely for gem value. At 3 wins, you get 1000 gems, which is a lot, but if you consider that you're only getting a single draft for your initial entry fee, to play again, you'd have to purchase a quick draft instead. This means, assuming you play one premier and one quick draft, your initial earnings from your 3 wins in premier is 1000-750, which is 250 gems, 50 gems *less* than had you played 2 Quick drafts and gotten a 3 win result each time. The inflection point at which you earn more gems in premier vs quick is at 4 wins. You win 1400 gems and subtracting the cost of a QD, you win 650 gems, which is 200 gems more compared to the same win rate in QDs. And every win thereafter, you'll earn greater value gem-wise from a premier draft compared to a similar win rate in QDs. In summary, for win rates at 50% or less (that is 3 wins or less), you get more gem value from QDs than premier. If, however, you can consistently average 4 wins or more per draft, you will make greater returns from premier drafts than QDs.

Great timing! I decided this is the set I would start to try to get good at drafting. Its always a toss up sometimes I get only 2 wins sometimes I go as far as 6, I'd like to be able to consistently get more wins so thanks for taking the time to make this type of content.

I didn't realize just how punishing it could be to get a few 1-3 and 2-3s on premier. That's probably why I usually gravitate toward quick drafts, especially as I start to rank up past my level of competence :P

I've gotten quite using to drafting during Zendikar but I never even thought of Draft overlays!! Used to use them on Hearthstone years back, definitely going to check yours out!

Have been beating myself in premier draft for the last few sets. I'm a very casual drafter and not very skilled at the format. Should have switched to quick draft a long time ago. I think I will enjoy the games much more and have more chances to play. Thanks for the useful video!

This is an awesome video. Thank you. I had no idea how to find the various options of drafting in the app in the iPad. I paused the video and went back into the game to find them. I’ll either get better at drafting now or at least have some fun with it. So far I don’t care about getting the entire set of cards for a particular series. That may change. I played in Arena for a while and then quit for over a year. Life and other interests got in the way. I am going to check out the untapped overlay and try to figure out how to use it.

Also press alt in draft shows the cards you have. I draft for cards and play quick. Even doing that I average 3 wins. If I draft to win then I AVG 4. What I find is when you hit 85pct in a set, draft will no longer get the returns for you. It literally drops from giving you 10+ new cards to 3-4. So you are then best off buying packs with gold.

I have enough wildcards from constantly drafting that I craft every cards when a set comes up. So vault accumulate fast to get you set up with wildcards for next set, and now all packs open for gem. Combine that with best of three can basically draft unlimited.

I'm using the Untapped draft companion and find it very useful when playing limited to build up my collection! Now and then it won't show any recommendations or ratings though, even though I have it enabled, not sure why.

Nice Videos, good job. Will try that draft companion. I am really scared of draft as i fear the 0,1 wins and have higher price per pack this way. Hoarded 100k gold, mainly goal was to buy the 90 Packs bundle when LotR drops 😅, but maybe with your advice, i give quickdraft a shot.

That draft helper overlay seems really cool!

There is a chance to get a second pack in quick draft at less that 7 wins. This makes the value proposition even better over multiple drafts. For example, If you do 100 drafts with 0 wins each you should get around 122 packs rather than just 100.

Playing premier draft help me a lot to craft cards to my collection, for me is far the best way to get cards in arena

interestingly enough, the cut-off for Gold-to-Gems conversion appears to be at 3 wins too this makes the choice pretty easy for budget / F2Players : think you'll go at least 3-3 ? -> Premier Draft wanna play it safe ? -> Quick Draft

Another note from memory is that quick drafts normally give a % of getting an additional free pack. I normally just use quicks to gain gems for mastery pass and do standard to keep the gold running. Ending in silver or gold while going for mythic in Ranked although I only reach it about every other month. This tends to keep your gold high and gems at a decent range based on win performance.

I think you mentioned something about using Common/Uncommon Wildcards to gain Gems? Also, which format should you be spending Gold in, Quick Draft?

Do you intend to do a breakdown of the drafting behavior of the Boys in Quick vs the Humans in Premier? Also do we have conformation that as to whether the draft pods are made up of similar skill levels as the games are? I do seem to do A LOT better after letting myself slip back into bronze while saving up gold.

Thank-you for the video! It left me confused about some things though. It's probably because I don't play much draft, but I didn't understand your notation... For example, under "0 Wins" for Quick Draft, you wrote "50 Gems / 1 Pack, 175 Gems / Pack." What do these numbers mean? The only number you referenced while talking about it was a 25-gem discount for that tier. Perhaps how you get from 50 & 175 to 25 has to do with the cost of entry and/or what you're using as the average gem-value of a pack? But it's hard to tell since I didn't see those numbers listed either. Came here after seeing your sealed event with CGB. I appreciate the breakdown and I learned that I should stay in Quick Draft for a little longer, I just wish I grokked the numbers. Thanks!

Based on your expansion basically Quick draft until you can average get 4 to 5 wins. Then premier and never do traditional drafts (even pros are negative e(v) for traditional.

You forgot to talk about "rare/mythic" drafting and that you can easily collect 6 to 9 rares out of the 3 boosters from quickdraft. This is what I currently do at strixhaven quick drafts. If you "rare" draft in premier draft, my experience is, that you just loose to much, as it is so competitive, that you cannot afford to pick rares instead of a better common.

I just started playing a little over a month ago. I use a different draft helper, but will try this one as well. Question though, is there a version of draft helper if you are specifically drafting for your collection instead of optimizing wins?

Can you help explain the Math of the Quick Draft more for people who use gold? If I have 5000 gold, I can either buy 5 packs or go into a quick draft. In the quick draft I open 3 packs and with 0 wins, I get on average 1.2 packs. That turns out to 4.2 rares per draft (not going to say packs because I assume you will collect all commons/uncommon) without the benefit of upping the wheel on the WCs. If you say packs are worth 200 gems then to get to 5 rares you would need the 200 gem payout which is 2 wins in order to get to the 5 but you still lose out on 3 pips on the WC wheel.

Srry but card acquisition for constructed is almost entirely a matter of wildcards. Like lets be real If your drafting to win youre usually getting like 2 or 3 cards you might eventually play outside of limited and any pack you crack is more often then not getting most of it's value from wildcard progress. That's just reality until we get another Eldrane or a meta thats not 25+rare/mythics per deck. You need 3.5 wins to break even on Premier. Even means you can crack as many packs as you could with the entry cost. Which is basically what you will average when youre rank levels if your in the middle 80%. The drafted card are bonus but dont put to much weight in them.

Is it realistic to try completing a set through drafting as a Free to Play player, if your skill level isn't sufficient to consistently get 3-4 wins in Premier Draft? Almost all MTG channels point to drafting as the best way to get cards and "complete the set". I've been quick drafting for AFR and have managed to get about 72% of the set (Breakdown: 95% Commons, 80% Uncommons, 40% Rares, 21% Mythics); and have 59 AFR packs. In the remaining 28% I don't have, this leaves about (I'm doing a rough eyeball of the numbers, so not exact) 20 Commons, 60 Uncommons, 145 Rares, 65 Mythics. With these numbers, I already have most of the cards I see during a draft, so I'm only really picking up a smattering of Commons/Uncommons, and a couple of Rares/Mythics per draft. It seems like it would take a crazy number of drafts to pick up the remaining Rares. On the other hand, the 59 packs (I haven't opened any, but also didn't buy any) don't seem like anywhere near enough to complete the remaining 150 Rares (let alone the 65 Mythics). I think I'm averaging 1-2 wins each draft, but even if my win rate was substantially higher, it seems like I would still have ended up in much the same place I am now (with Quick Draft) - as reward for more wins doesn't meaningfully increase number of packs received. Given the reward distribution you've outlined, it seems I'd need to be playing Premier Draft, and consistently getting 3-4 wins (at minimum) to reach a point where I could accumulate enough packs to fill out the remaining Rares. Is this correct?

I am bad at drafting in every card game (gwent, hearthstone) and I tryed quick draft in mtga and in 3 games a went for 0,1,0 wins :D Is better for me to buy packs, or constantly 0 or 1 win is still beter than buying packs?

My problem with premiered raft is, that even me, who has an 60 percent win rate I sometimes go 2-3 and it feels really bad.

So the draft companion won’t work for arena mobile on IOS or any mobile device as far as I know. Is there an arena companion that is compatible with arena mobile?

Taking into consideration duplicate protection and that I do quick draft to mainly pull every rare I get passed, what would be a good breakeven point to stop drafting and just crack packs?
