My impressions of the different ways that people listen. Listening is a hard skill to master, but so important. Some of the most likeable people are the ones who genuinely listen to you.

Sorta necessary when working with others, and just because you’re an introvert, doesn’t mean you have to be socially awkward. Helpful to anyone who wants to be "likable": I read an article which said that to become instantly likeable to strangers, one of the critical elements in conversations is to always direct the convo back at the person you're talking to. Allow them to talk. We humans naturally like to talk about ourselves, so when you allow others to talk more about themselves (instead of talking about yourself), they will automatically like you. They'll be like, "That person is soo cool!!", and they often don't realise why. But *you* know... 😉🙃
@Phoenix_Down444
@Phoenix_Down444 Жыл бұрын
Anytime I try that, it ends up being more of an interview than a casual conversation. 😂

But I have met people that tend to redirect the subject about me, and I always LOVE talking to those people.
@madnessintomagic
@madnessintomagic Жыл бұрын
I always laugh at this advice. I know it’s true but then you end up with a gaggle of new friends who really REALLY “like you” but only because you let them talk about themselves incessantly. I don’t want friends who talk about themselves incessantly. So naturally it’s not really YOU they like. WE should be able to talk, together. But that’s….rude? Somehow? I can’t stand when people redirect to me or interview-style me. It feels invasive and personal on a level I haven’t granted them yet. We’re not that intimate until we’re that intimate Don’t you have anything to share about yourself?
@RavenMobile
@RavenMobile Жыл бұрын
I have always been a good listener, and the primary way of showing you're a good listener is to ask relevant questions about what they're talking about. It demonstrates that you're listening attentively and getting what they're saying, and just wanting some clarification. Also when they get to the end of a subject you can proceed to ask them a question about another somewhat related topic to help them continue on talking. People love to talk about themselves to an attentive audience!
@Fatimah262
@Fatimah262 Жыл бұрын
@@madnessintomagic lol i think it's just both ways. i like to talk as much as the person i'm talking to, but i don't know what to talk about, especially when i meet someone new, so i ask them about themselves and they answer, and then i say smth relevent to the topic, then listen to them, and then talk myself, and so on. you control the balance of the conversation, where you talk, but also listen to what the other has to say. nobody likes the person who incessantly talks about themselves and doesn't let others talk, and neither do they like the person who just quietly listens and doesn't contribute to the convo and keeps saying, "No, no, you talk; I'm listening." if somebody talks too much and doesn't let you talk, i'd say find an opening and interject and say what you wanted to say.

“Me Monsters” - thank you for your honesty! :) I have a genuine question for ya’ll. When you’re having a conversation, are you wanting to talk more than listen because you genuinely enjoy telling stories? Or because it feels painful to not have a response ready after someone’s done talking? Or maybe because you want to feel seen/heard/accepted and want to make sure the listeners are perceiving you the way you want to be perceived? Or a combo? I’m just genuinely curious because I think the insight would help all of us be more understanding of one another. I’m the “over-affirmer” but can quickly become the “exit seeker” when I realize I’m in a conversation with a “Me-Monster”, cuz that co-dependent conversation will never end. Lol!! 😂 Buuuut, maybe if I understood what the “Me-Monster” is really wanting out of a conversation, I could give that and then find a way out. I always feel bad trying to leave a convo with a “Me-Monster” cuz no matter how long I let them talk, it seems they’re never quite satisfied, but also, I want to honor my boundaries and not stick around longer than is enjoyable for me.

I'm the specific kind of a professional listener: a journalist. I ask a question, then listen very intently paying attention to everything you say and then follow up a question based on what you said or something you said. And you never hear anything about me unless I screw up. So. What happened to the cinnamon rolls, Daniel?

😃 I used to be an introvert but now i can manage to continue a conversation long enough.... But the problem is that since I'm still not good with small talk it turns into an interview 😂😝.... And sometimes i become me-monster and talk something rubbish😞 I guess practice is the only way i can make it.... 😃 But i would like to take an advice from you since you must be good at communicating (See i can't dare to ask for something like this to people surrounding me 😅 it's awkward you know)

@@iamjust1normalgirlfromindi446 Don't worry, people love talking about themselves. I don't think they even realize it's kind of like an interview conversation😃. People love talking about *their* issues.

What about the introverts? - the one who genuinely listens and is glad they don’t have to talk - the one who can’t keep eye contact and seems like is looking for an exit but actually is interested it, just seems like battery is running low again - the one who desperately needs to go home bc battery is completely out - the one who gets constantly lost in their own thoughts and completely forgets what the other was talking about (especially awkward when asked a question)
