Eh, I'd skip Fates... It's not been recieved well among the fanbase. For a starting point I'll advice Awakening, Shadow Dragon or Sacred Stones. Awakening being the one with Chrom, Robin and Lucina. Shadow Dragon is a remake of the original game which focusses on Marth and Sacred Stones is a stand-alone game not related to any other games. It's also one of the more easier ones in the franchise.

I second this (Awakening was my starting point on the series, it's a great game), but can't agree with the bit about Fates. Yeah, the fanbase is... critical... of it, but if you don't want to bother with weapons breaking then you could try it.

I feel the characters and story are just much weaker in fates, even compared to Awakening which tried to be more simplistic to attract newer fans (Which isn't bad as it saved the franchise.) to the point I can barely remember anything about it.

I'd start with Awakening. It's not the best in the series, but it's really easy to get into and a really well-rounded game. As for other 3DS games, Fates' story (and its characters to a lesser extent) are awful, but the gameplay (especially in Conquest) is pretty great, while in Echoes, the story and overall presentation are fantastic, the gameplay is vastly different and dated compared to the other games. IMO, two best games are FE7, which has Roy's dad, and Path of Radiance, which has Ike.

Tbf, Echoes is a remake of the second FE isn't it? So it's pretty different because they wanted to experiment. But yes, I'll say the one with Eliwood, Hector and Lynn is pretty great.
