I am about Bob's age and spend 6-8 months of the year boondock camping and hiking in the Rocky Mountains, mainly off trail by myself. Up until last year I did the same thing Bob did by letting someone know where I was, where I intended to go and what time I thought I would be back. Most places I hike have no cell service. I don't know how many times I had for one reason or another veered off my proposed trek. Last year I finally bought a Garmin In Reach and boy what a difference that makes. It sends out my location every ten minutes so even in the event that I were incapacitated, it would still continue to send my coordinates or in a worse case situation a Grizzly Bear ate me and the Garmin, they would at least be able to narrow a search for my bones or bear poop with my Garmin from the last ten minute broadcast. If you are hiking alone get one of these devices..if not for you than for your loved ones and the rescuers that will be coming to look for you.

Yeah now a days there's no reason not to take one, a gps. As someone else commented, if not for yourself then for your loved ones! I don't know how they work & the hiker might not need one to find their way around but God forbid the worst does happen??! Surely you'd want your loved ones to have answers & funeral so they can get some sort of closure & they can move on to mourn you.. . Properly! I believe the 'not knowing' would be the worst!? I'm sure I'd feel 'stuck' somehow, I'd be forever having thoughts of 'what could of happened?' & 'Where are they?' I always wish people who go missing are found soon💗🕊

Thanks so much for covering this story with the other still missing hiker in this area. As slightly better news, there was a dog that was also missing around the same time as this gentleman and Mr. Sands, and the dog eventually found her way to a house and the residents recognized the dog and called the owners. No clue how the dog survived that long, but she made it.

Happy the dog survived. The dog has better senses for finding its way to civilization than mankind. Likely the dog stuck by his or her owner’s side until he passed. That’s why it wasn’t found earlier.

@@archie15900 Well, go hiking in the winter in high evavations then.. i'm just stating the obvious, trying to rationalize dangerous behavior with aircraft statistics is silly..Most people fly on commercial jets, that almost never crash, and when they do, there isn't much searching for survivors..Sure, in Alaska flying is dangerous..I gave up flying on small planes long ago..But, that is a straw man argument and apples and oranges..

@@archie15900 i understand what you’re saying but I live in the Olympics and though they aren’t near a 14,000 plus elevation they can be treacherous to the inexperienced hikers, anytime people go into the wilderness or even fly over it, stuff can happen, it only takes a second.

@@archie15900 Really? "We're not talking about climbing K2 here"? Those mountains at this point in time are extremely dangerous. Just a couple of years ago an SAR volunteer died in those mountains looking for a hiker. Elevation doesn't necessarily determine risk levels. As someone familiar with SAR you should know that.

If you notice 99% of these cases are experienced hikers. And that is because they overestimate their abilities and underestimate any risk and danger. An inexperienced person will be cautious and will not wander far from safety.

I was listening to this story of Bob Gregory. As usual, you have presented this in such a way as to engage those watching to fully engage and capture our desire to pray for these missing hikers to be found and found safely. As you know full well, that is not end result in most cases. I do so appreciate being able to feel that you are giving us factual information and give as much information as there is to give. I live far away in KY, but it doesn't keep me from caring about these adventurers. There are so many mysteries in life and these are sometimes so baffling. I appreciate your compassion for the families and friends of these hikers who have gone missing and have most times met their demise on trails. Thank you for CARING and sharing. AND if you have read all the way to the end, I saw that you had one coin left. If you haven't already found a good home for it, I can assure you I will treasure it and appreciate it, keeping it safe. God bless you in all you do. As I said on another comment, I have watched you for several years, as I'm recovering from a December total knee replacement, my 5th surgery in less that 4 calendar years. Recovering allows me to have a lot of time to view TV and KZfaqrs. Found you and have watched almost all of your videos. Kudos on the fabulous job you do. Okay, I'll let you go for now. I type like I talk, very loquacious. I almost always stick with the video to the end! I'm sorry about you being locked out of your youtube account and your vehicle trouble. I really don't follow missing hikers so I don't know who you've covered and who you haven't. Have you every covered any missing hikers on KY trails/state parks, etc.? Maryellen Self

Thanks for the video. I know this area very well. I have a custom electric high torque quad that I use to move around the steep terrain. I had been looking for details on his Bob's last location. My plan is get to Deer Flats Group Campground and use a dji drone to record video of the mountain side. Then view it in a high resolution screen later. That would be the most efficient way to search the mountain. The Group Campground sits above Deer Flats campground and it's closed. There is a road that leads up there.

I think they need to stop people hiking up too high there at the moment. There is too much snow and ice up in those mountains to make it safe and you don't want to be putting the lives of search and rescue workers at more risk either. Maybe the one thing to come out of all of this is that it addresses safety issues in that National Park and raises awareness of personal safety for hikers.

Seems like he was very experienced, very thorough and very safety cautious. But as one professional mountain climber and moutain hiker put it- sometimes even THAT is not enough. Sometimes between you and nature, nature will win. He highly recommended 2 things- 1) check the weather to figure out what you could run into at higher elevations. When in doubt, don't be afraid to revisit the location some other time, it aint going nowhere. So DO NOT allow an over inflated view of your skills overtake your reasonable judgement. 2) Always take a Personal Locator Beacon or Satellite Phone. Should you become stranded or get lost, these devices will greatly increase your chances of being found.

I will never hike in snow. Ever. You work ten times harder just taking a walk in snow. I grew up in treacherous winters in Northern Wisconsin. Negative temperatures, heavy snow and blizzards can be brutal. I honestly don't get the hype myself. Maybe because I was raised in it. If people can be safe about it that's fine but when you have to continuously rescue people in certain areas. Authorities then have to close that section. Playing in heavy snow is not the same thing as living in it.

You know I hate to be an AH but if a hiker doesn’t bother to take safety precautions it’s on him or her. Every year in Southern California people go missing and if they only took simple precautions like GPS a sat phone a bright yellow or orange jacket maybe flares they could’ve lived to hike another day. California spends millions of dollars and search and rescue personnel risk their lives and sometimes die looking for people who did very little to save themselves. I think it’s time to pass a law that prevents people from hiking unless they have the proper equipment to be located out in case of injury or becoming lost, it’s not that difficult to be prepared. I think I heard that each medi vac helicopter rescue costs north of $20,000 and I can’t imagine how much it costs to start a search. Park rangers law enforcement helicopters and search and rescue teams not to mention the risk and wear and tear on volunteers. With the money we’d save we enact law charge fees have people do like pilot who file flight plans. I’m not insensitive to the lost hikers but there has to be some accountability for those who choose to set out to climb up mountains in winter. I think people joke about the “Darwin award” If you choose to drive a hundred miles per hour on the freeway and you get killed that’s on you if you set out to go deep sea fishing and you don’t tell anybody it’s on you. RIP

Heard he was found just 12 days after we went out there in February May he rest in peace

I’ve done January-February trekking in the San Gabriel’s. Snow shoes. Crampons (or Yak Trax at minimum) Rope. Ice axe, bivy gear & most importantly: friends. Trekking into the San Gabriel’s alone this time of year is quite honestly insane. I’ve fallen in tree wells 6 feet deep & had a few fall arrests onto my axe at Gergonio too. Going up there 4 season , solo, just isn’t wise. Folks? It’s just not wise.

I have barely no season 4 experience especially in western mountains. I definitely recommend if anyone does go out they bring a sat com device and go with other people and stick together! So many people split up which doesn't end good. Thank you for your comment and experience. Sounds like you've had some close calls, glad you made it out safe! Thank you for watching🙏

The trail from windy gap to little jimmy spring in the snow is sooo dangerous! There’s a possibility if he wanted to get water he fell down a chute.

If he was so 'experienced,' why did he go by himself???? The 'experts' always say never go hiking 'ALONE!!!'

Not very smart to leave his home to embark on such a dangerous journey.

WHY - in the worst weeks for violent, unpredictable weather? Leave it until Spring/Summer.

Anyone hiking ALONE in these conditions, no matter how experienced,... is unwise. And if they are not brining with them a satellite PLB (personal locator beacon,) that is set up to make use of the advanced service that can TRACK the hiker's steps, (regardless if the hiker is able to hit the SOS button,) and transmit that data to a friend or loved one.... that person, again, is being very unwise. Had he taken this action, of bringing a tracking PLB.... then SAR would have a more specific area to know to go look for him in.

He could be "experienced" but he was not prudent: how in hell he'd go in winter time, by himself to climb a mountain?

Over 90% of Search and Rescue attempts start and bad weather moves in. This theme runs through most of these stories. What’s the connection? 🤔🤔🤔. 👍

Perhaps just that winter and spring have more snow and rain in many areas. But🤷‍♂️thank you for watching and your feedback!

He could of stepped through deep snow over a trail and went down on a snow chute causing him to be trapped several feet under snow. Same situation as an avalanche - he should of taken a tracker. I’ve hiked the trails in this area for years. Sadly, I can see he may be feet under snow. I was on Mt San Gorgonio in the early 90’s first unexpected snow in November we camped at Vivian creek. As we hiked up passing the crashed plane no snow but got closer to the summit, we ran into snow losing the trail. Snow was at my knees and saw it was a steep incline - risky we could be off trail only standing on snow so we turned around to make this another day.
