Incredibly sad. One of my friends from high school had a mom & living situation like this. She OD’d and died in front of him before we graduated, CPS had never intervened in any way & didn’t then because he was recently 18. With a rental trailer-home and no way to pay for it, he was instantly homeless. We all tried as best we could (for 18-20 year olds) to help him out financially & socially, and he actually did surprisingly well for a bit almost saving up to afford his apartment... but then his mom’s genes kicked in. 10 years later, he has full blown schizophrenia, is still homeless, dangerously suspicious of doctors & _anybody_ who tries to help, and is constantly self-medicating with alcohol and other shit. The mental illness would’ve set in eventually, but I can’t help but believe it was only made quicker by the circumstances & I think a lot about how things could’ve been so different if he truly got the help he needed as a child.

"outsmart" A murderer hasn't outsmarted the authorities when they kill someone. For the most part they exist to punish those who actually commit a crime. The US has very stringent jurisdiction and bureaucracy especially in fringe edge cases. The fact a 15 year old could exploit this isn't evidence the 15 year old is a super genius, but that things could be improved. He is probably a smart guy, that being said.
