my boss who has worked at the company for 20 something years and who constantly put in 60 hour weeks got laid off by a new manager that has been with the company for not even a year. i remember my boss bragging about how many hours he put in every week, saying "people notice that, and when shit hits the fan, they will remember all that I've done for the company" well that clearly isn't the case, an office environment can change at any moment with new management. don't take your work too seriously people. that is fucking 866 days, almost two and a half fucking years worth of over time subtracted from his life that he will never get back. it makes me sick thinking about it.

Imagine structuring your entire life and your sense of self worth around getting praised by your corporate overlords. No they just leave and spend their time having fun while you work.

In my opinion, it's okay to be a corporate simp. Why is it not okay to secure your future and pay raise, while everyone else is slouching around doing the same type of work everyday, and not growing? The best way to deal with irritated coworkers is to speak their language. If you're performing well, don't look down on them. Speak as if you're also as miserable as they are, learn to have common enemies with them, learn to also look like you hate the bosses. They'll see you as a true achiever, not an irritating coworker.
@Tristoo

@@emmanuelgoldstein8233 Right because you have 0 negotiation skills, 0 critical thinking capabilities, and 0 courage. If you're actually that good, just go freelance or make your own company where you also code and make everyone's life miserable. But you're not, you're only as good as everyone else, but because you get no approval anywhere else in your life - the company is all. You just don't have anything else that matters enough that you'd like to put your extra time into. Making things for people who don't care about you more than they care about how much money you can make them is how you get your gratification. I honestly don't get how someone can be that messed up. You're not securing your future, they'll fire you on a whim if you just so happen to be in the wrong place where the guy above your boss (who's firing your boss and his whole team) doesn't know who you are. And he won't, because he doesn't know what an if statement is and you don't exist to him. And no, you're not securing a pay raise, and if you are it's probably not much of a pay raise when compared to someone else just switching jobs. And as for the "speak their language" part, you're just a weasel and you're probably pretending to be someone you're not on all other facets of your life. Nobody knows you and nobody loves you for who you are, because you don't exist. I would bet you either have no imagination at all, or repress it to the point where there's not a single waking moment that you can spend in your own head (which would make sense that you work so much to help shut off those nasty nasty thoughts and insecurities).

@kingofallcrypto I applied to an internal promotion my team had after our (only) senior developer left. I straight up told my manager I was confident I could get the same job anywhere else in the company (technically I hadn't gotten it yet, but I'd applied for 2 senior positions. 1 obviously liked me and the other had a coding test so easy I could have aced it in high school). They were still surprised when I got another internal offer, and I think I'd been telling them I want a promotion for almost a year. On the other hand, I told a coworker to put his name instead of mine on a shared laptop, and he instantly knew I was leaving. Its really not like I was subtle. The interview for my promotion they basically told me stuff like "well we have a lot of other candidates so don't get your hopes up". And suddenly when I want to leave they're like "well do you wanna wait to hear back? We really need you to knowledge share. We were only not rushing on that senior dev position because you were here". So basically. they figured I'd just be a tech lead from the junior role (technically it was called senior developer, but on every other team the most senior member is a tech lead not a senior developer and it was legit the only non junior role on our whole team of like 10 devs and 3 projects). At the very least, the counter offer was better than 5%.It would have been like 15% and I'd have gotten it because they falsely believed they needed me (we had really good junior devs and were months ahead of schedule, I was out of work most days), and because they couldn't get anyone competent to accept what was effectively a tech lead role role at mid level pay so I'd have been legit the only choice. They were better than the 5% guy. They were not surprised when I didn't take the "well you can wait and see and if we can't get anyone else we guess we'll have to take you" counter offer.

After that, I noticed that I was spending so much time after work getting shit done to try and impress management. As days passed, I realized they dont really give a fuck and I was just working myself out of a job by getting shit done too quickly, while pissing everyone else off. I'm now way more chill, management is still happy but I'm on better terms with my co-workers. The team leaders at a previous company in which I worked usually delayed promotions from Junior to Mid-level if the junior worked overtime. It is actually quite logical - if you work overtime you obviously have no time management and you can't complete your tasks within the given work day and if you get promoted to mid-level and work on more serious projects you will basically have to sleep in the office. So yeah, overtime sucks and it is nothing good to brag about. Go in - do your job - go out to your friends and family. Best case scenario - start your own business.

If you work overtime, you might also work for a company that is unable to calibrate their expectations, leading to employee burnout. Also to delay promotion just because of that, is a very scummy move, because you might be competent and still do overtime because you want to learn as much as possible. Any idiot can start a business. You can do that in 2 days. Proving competence and actually attracting clients or developing your own products is a totally different story.

That "I work overtime so all my tasks get complete" is such a trick. On the team I'm on now, I had to get people to stop doing that. Because every release, we're fixing bugs overtime up to the deadline (except for me and our tech lead, we both went offline), and right after the release, unsurprisingly there's 10 new bugs. So you look like you're doing so much work. But you're just fixing a bug you introduced last time you worked overtime. And that might trick management into thinking you're getting a lot done (because they'll just see 2 tickets, one for a story and 1 for a bug, not the fact you created that bug), but its not worth the mental stress of dealing with a hastily thrown together product for 50-60 hours a week. Oh and if you think you're that competent developer who can focus for 10 hours and not add any new bugs, then ask yourself, why do you need to work that long to get all your work done? If you're that good, 40 hours is more than enough to separate yourself from your coworkers.

Then again, I work at a good company, overtime is frowned on as it means you failed to plan, if you get extra work done you can claim it if you like, most usually e.g. work a Saturday and then take a Monday/next Friday off for a long weekend. It's crazy how crap some companies are, and a dev who messes over his team mates will have issues growing anywhere outside of the company and you'll have a pretty bad time once you burn out as no team mate will help you out.

I just want to stay behind the scenes and under the wraps, do my work and GTFO. More recognition means more responsibilities and to me it's not worth it if it isn't incentivised monetarily.

Glassdoor can have the exec’s disguise themselves to appear as “happy workers”. This is better than the show “the office” or the movie “office space”. This is pretty much rubbing it DIRECTLY in their face for being ass-clowns. I personally am getting tired of being put through the meat grinder - asked to work obscene amount of hours for shit pay. Companies keep telling me to “cusp my ankles” and keep taking it up the ass for whatever they want to give me, and expect me to be happy just to have a job. Please continue to call these shit-heads out. Thanks.

And so on and go on. It is a big waste of time to talk to bosses... They understand you value your life outside of work and treat your life away from work with respect, and stay the hell out of it. I've loved the few companies that treated me like a whole person. On your first example I think you for illuminating for me social problems I had throughout my childhood. I'm not in an IT career and I don't have such issues so much in the workplace, but I felt like in elementary and high school every attempt to participate was punished by others and every time I did the right thing I was perceived as a goody two shoes. I wasn't trying to make others look bad but it was perceived that way. A certain amount was due to a teacher who seemed to be very sympathetic to me but was probably doing me a disservice. What was more frustrating was seeing other people succeed and not be scorned by their peers for it. All that is far in the past but I guess can serve as a reminder to be careful about how you succeed.

The first person asks for risks to him. I think he's actually not going to get promoted. And the reason is that when your manager just knows you'll simp for them no matter what, they have no reason to promote you. You'll stay anyways. And even if you're not like that, I know the most competent coworker I ever had met all 4 of those conditions. Not by simping. Its just management would go direct to him with questions (meets the positive part of 1 even though he'd always ask us our opinion before meeting management), we were months ahead on schedule (management for some reason gave him credit for our whole team), me and another member split time on another team (meets 3), and the department knew him (too large a company for everyone to know him). He did not get a promotion. A member from another team who was higher than him left, and they needed a replacement. And the person who left recommended my coworker. So... yeah he got a promotion entirely because an infantry member recommended him. Management didn't even give him a counter offer (and they loved him). That's the real danger of simping. Its that, the company just won't promote you anyways. Its easier to advance by switching teams (for the record I left for an internal position a level above what the rest of our team finally got promoted to a year later). And if everyone hates you, you won't get good recommendations. Oh and to anyone doing overtime, at my company there was a 3 month period where was horribly depressed and did literally nothing. My performance review was "upper management saw your head down during a department-wide meeting." The fact I had done literally nothing for months was not mentioned at all.

Oh boy, so much to unpack here but just a couple of points: 1. If you work more than what you are supposed to, you will be rewarded with...more work. 2. Never have a ever met someone who quit a job without giving copious amounts of direct and indirect signals, yours truly included, so if a manager wonders why staff quit without a chance to renegotiate, this person is either a hypocrite or an imbecile. I still remember two jobs I quitted and it went like this: I asked for a meeting with my line manager, I explain the reasons why I should get a raise, I get the "it´s not a good time" or a tiny percentage of what I have asked for, and then whenever I get a new job they act all surprised and I am like "You really didn´t see it coming?". At once particular job on a startup, when I was denied a raise I gave my future stock options to the HR lady ON THAT VERY MEETING. How much clearer would you want me to be? 3. By the way I don´t do "exit interviews", nor I do "job interview interviewer assessments" unless I am paid to do so. Actually, not true, if there is a marking system I put the lowest marks but refuse to provide explanation. This makes their software lower the marks of the employers but have no chance to find out why.

This applies to the public sector too. I would go above and beyond only if it was reciprocal. Often it's not so i don't do it. I do good work and they reward me with more work...Often it's work that was not completed by others. It's just a slap in the face and very disrespectful. This kind of crap just harbors resentment. Why should I do more work if you're not going to pay me more? What's worse is that I do way more than my predecessors because they were lazy and inefficient but management and upper management doesn't recognize that at all. They see it as a new standard. My job is just a means to end. It's to obtain money, skills, and more opportunity.
