What I've noticed is that the farther you get down the list the more violence against women there is. Theres something to be said about how male horror directors love to make movies where women get raped and murdered constantly and think thats peak horror. I genuinely think that's lazy. It's also hard for me to like those movies, because I like horror movies because theyre a way to address real life fears in a safe and removed way, but these movies are just the reality afab people and women experience everyday. Weird quote from Daniel Tosh: "comedians like to complain 'you can't get away with saying anything these days'. you can say whatever you want. You just have to realize there are consequences" Bizarrely rational take for an edgy 2000s comedian, since a lot of his contemporaries now go on and on about about being "cEnSoReD" and everyone being too sensitive and and other crap like that
@thegreatsiberianitch
@thegreatsiberianitch 3 жыл бұрын
"cEnSoReD".... Between cEnSoReD and CENSORED... Where's the line? And more importantly, who draws it? Well you can pretty much do away with 95% of the iceberg, and a lot, a lot, a lot of other sh!t... Violence in video games?! Consequences? So why is it acceptable in one art form and not another? Better jail everyone involved in all those films.. It's Elmo time for you buddy... Is this 1980s Satanic Panic Born Again Christian time or 2020 oKiE wOkiE o'clock? I've seen both and I can say... Surprisingly alike... You should be reporting this video rather than watching it, right? Help out society??.. Hold up though, im still watching it, i got distracted by this comment... So Tosh is smart and he's funny but he's towing the line to save his own skin, he's dick joke edgy. Probly scared an old girlfriend is gonna try to put him up on a MeToo for clout. He's been in show biz long enough to know what buttons he can push and which ones he can't. Entertainment is a job like any other, you gotta act right to get ahead, be a company man. I'll see your Tosh and I'll raise you a Lennon and a Hicks... "And you think you're so clever and classless and free, but you're still fu(king peasants as far as I can see." "I'm tired of this back slapping, 'Aren't humanity neat?' bullsh!t. We're a virus with shoes." Oh goodness... I'm sorry.... I got worked up... I'm need to snuggle with my social anxiety pig 🐖.... Oink! Everyone needs to die inside just a little bit, its part of LIFE... so you know what part is the real you and what parts are bullsh!t... So you have something to rise above... And so when you "eMpAtHiZe" with people you actually feel for them instead of just acting like you feel sorry for them. Censorship is not compassion. Censorship is willful and enforced ignorance. Open dialogue, communication, is intelligence, is compassionate. Censorship is suffocation, censorship is violence. Consequences right?... Like when MLK pissed off that guy and he went up and shot him? Or when JFK got assassinated?? "cOnSeQuEnCeS" When are people going to get over making life miserable for each other? I see no end in sight. My pig is lonely.

I think calling James Wan's approach to horror movies 'Fast and Furious-fying' is pretty accurate. His movies are well shot, well edited, and well constructed. I think James Wan is a good director. But I personally don't find his movies to be terrifying and scary. I don't mean to sound like an insufferable snob, but they feel more like theme park ride rather than horror movies. They are horror version of MCU movies in that sense.

…I actually wrote a review of Midori: Shoujo Tsubaki for an anime website a while back. I will clarify that it's not weird-horny (despite technically being a Suehiro Maruo adaptation) so much as it's literally the director working out his trauma through animation, and it's about as much "fun" as that sounds. It's really upsetting and I would personally have put it lower on this chart all things considered.

Yes. I agree it needs to be a lot lower on the list as it's really more of a *"gets under your skin"* kind of scary because once you understand it, the movie might be more disturbing to the viewers who have been working through their own traumas.
@zab416
@zab416 3 жыл бұрын
Midori is super disturbing but it's also has a definite kind of humanity in my opinion. How Midori got attached to her terrible "found family" of carnies is the part that haunts me, personally, like that girl who abused her waving goodbye and seeming genuinely attached to Midori and vice versa. Like an abusive family or community is the best some people get... it made me sympathize a bit with all these monstrous assholes who were abusing Midori, because they were abused too (not that it made their actions right in any way). It's just very sad. I didn't know it was the director working through his trauma. That makes sense, thanks for mentioning that.

It's an adaptation of a graphic novel by the infamous ero-guro artist Suehiro Maruo and on the series of kamishibai (paper play) melodramas from the '40s and '50s upon which that manga is based, as well as heavily informed by the director's own memories of being horribly bullied as a child. So it's a mix of various things, some clearly very heightened (Maruo's elegantly framed and deeply morbid neo-Surrealist artwork) and others much more grounded and tragic (Harada's own traumatic experiences during the postwar years). It's… a tough sit.

Cannibal Holocaust is 100% a horrific and legitimately racist movie but I don't think your reading is entirely accurate. The movie is about how the Western film crew are far worse than the people they are exploiting and making out to be savages; the ones who start the raping and murdering are the Western film crew. They're left alone up until that point, and they get violent on their own because they view themselves as better than these people, and because they want material for their documentary - because shock and horror and violence sell. As you said, ~~ooo they're the real cannibals~~ kind of is the message of the movie, but it's more about how colonialist, sensationalist horror and 'journalism' is in itself essentially cannibalistic, profiting off of the destruction of humanity. Not to defend the movie or anything, its production is particularly horrific and even more racist than the movie, after all.

The "they're just stupid, what did they think would happen" is what she says in this video, but it's nice to hear she talked more about it, and she does end on the main, boiled down version of proms reading: "what if the film crew are the real cannibals?"

I think something to understand about the 120 days of Sodom is how prescient it still is. In Italy Alessandra Mussolini was an MEP until very recently, one of his grandsons stood to be in the Senate. Fascism is still ripe and a prominent ideology as shown by Liga Nord and the 5 star party. In Italy a lot of people still have this nostalgia for Mussolini, "he made the trains run on time", etc, both among the elderly who grew up during the war and their children. My father and my aunt's family and my grandparents still hold on to it - I'll never forget my aunt's husband's il duce apron. I think because of that, it's still quite visceral both in the film itself and in it's application to modern day Italy. Not much has changed since it was made, and there's not been really any reckoning with Italian fascism as there was in Germany. I think it's quite comparable to the Confederacy in the US, in that I think a lot of people would engage in the brutal acts depicted in the film today.

Martyrs is a film that still sends cold shivers down my spine whenever I think about it. Genuinely never want to watch it again but simultaneously glad I at least experienced it once. Side Note: I stan the fictional Conjuring Universe Warrens rather than the real ones because I feel they are straight up grifters who are only different from the likes of Joel Osteen or Pat Robertson in that they don't have megachurch/evangelical empires.

i think you misscharacterized shojo tsubaki as just a horny anime film (in my opinon), but knowing the context and who made it might help you see it different, it was made and animated by just one guy and some voice actors over the course of more than five years, so the animation is very cheap and rudimentary, the director and animator always pushes an anti war and anti bullying agenda, he has a KZfaq channel in witch he depicts different leftist protests and has talked about his own abuse. i found it to not be very exploitative or showing too much, in my opinion not a movie just for kicks, i dont know if you watched and read it differently tho, it is based on an eroguro manga, i can see how you might draw that conclusion

Brilliant video! For those who want to know about Shoujo Tsubaki, I have seen it and this is my opinion. It is honestly an experience to watch. It combines a lot of beautiful imagery with really really disturbing scenes. I felt so overwhelmed watching it and the ending is so confusing but the experience in general is so worth the watch, and you really feel for the main character. The characters are honestly out of this world, so weird and cruel but so interesting at the same time. Definitely worth a watch if you can handle the imagery and disturbing ideaology.

@@danielvandam I think there was a weird misconception going around online specifically in film lists of so-called most disturbing films ever because I've seen lists with Salo and Cannibal Holocaust, they usually mix in a Serbian film into the bunch. Ppl misconstrued disturbing and horror as the same thing. These lists of films weren't usually created for educational purposes and they weren't aimed at cinephiles, but usually the hegemony, and because of that they were usually clickbait. So now you have all these ppl watching Salo just to say they saw it... and dare I say without really experienceing it as actual cinema. At least that's a partial reason.

Completely agree. And if I can add, as a male survivor of sexual assault, it is absolutely WONDERFUL when I see people dismiss the scene where the dude literally gets drugged, gang raped, and then runs away horrified after the fact as him just having sex. Just great. Cool. Cool cool cool.

Midsommar is mostly a "break up" movie, the director has said as much. So she is pretty much on the money about the movie.
@TimDownsAnimation
@TimDownsAnimation 3 жыл бұрын
@@simonbolivar6169 I think it’s a little more ambiguous than that, but I totally get that perspective. But I think it’s more about a breakup being taken advantage of by a cult, so a combination of the two. Like how Hereditary is a child death tragedy that gets taken advantage of by a demon and its worshippers. In Midsommar, I pick up much more on the cult theme partly because real cults do take advantage of trauma and relationship issues, making them worse while misguiding you into thinking it’s better, hence the protagonist’s joy in the end. But that’s just my interpretation of it. I just think it’s more nuanced than how May put it in this video, and she even clarifies it in the next one that she’s aware there’s more to it than that.

27:11 most of the time, cannibalism occurs as a funeral rite, known as mortuary cannibalism. The Wari tribe did this in order to completely break down the body quickly because the idea of burying a corpse and having it rotting in the ground for years was horrific to them. Different cultures have different ideas of what 'putting to rest' means. To the Wari, it was desolation through consuming the body so that it wouldn't be physically present in any recognizable form. Due to invasion of their lands and deforestation, the Wari were exposed to flu, malaria, and a plethora of other diseases they had no immunity against. The Brazilian government agreed to give them medical aid, if they ceased their sacred funerary rites. This is a positive example of mortuary cannibalism, sadly stolen from those who practiced it. It isn't what I want done to my future corpse (the end result of all life) but I sympathize and believe that if a practice doesn't harm or oppress, then go right ahead. Enjoy that Long Pig, just remember the secret's in the sauce

@@ashergibson9969 relatively certain that they ate their human well done. Now the Fore tribe of Papua New Guinea specifically ate the brains and developed kuru, would die from it, and then the cycle would start over. Interestingly, there is currently research showing that members of this tribe may have developed some immunity to prions due to how long this practice was taking place. So to ammend my previous comment, cultural relativism should include space for being critical of practices that are clearly harmful within the practicing group, while understanding reasoning. Best example of taboo in one culture that could be either positive or negative depending on how it's practiced: cannibalism; Fore vs Wari.

I can confirm both points. I tried to show it to a couple of friends, and we had to stop the film about 20 minutes in, since The Things That Happen Around The 20 Minute Mark was clearly too much for one of them. I have apologised to the friend in question ever since. (Tetsuo is a wild, violent and hyper-kinetic experience, and, demonstrably, not suitable for everyone. I'm personally fascinated with how the director, Shinya Tsukamoto, films movement - there's an angry, intensive, frenetic, unstoppable energy to the way he shoots Tetsuo, or the boxing scenes in Tokyo Fist, or the action in Bullet Ballet).
