You can absolutely keep it short. The dog won't have that classic puli look, but it doesn't matter for the animal. The hard part is keeping a high energy herding dog properly stimulated.

@@veronicabeattie1744i think at 80% dry the remaining 20% will air dry quick enough to not mold. 20% air dry may take 24 hours, 80-100% air dry could take many days. No locs but i have super thick coily African American and hair and when it’s bound together my hair will take days to dry.

They would get dunked with the sheep once a year. They were outside working dogs, and a healthy corded coat is selfcleaning except for large burrs that would be hand picked out by the shepherd. Grew up with a puli right across from us, they are incredibly inteligent, and he never went indoors, not even in the coldest winter - he had a job protecting the house and herding us kids after school 😂 - he was a happy and helathy dog living to 15 yrs. Forgot to mention he loved "sandbathing" so I think that is partly what helped keep his coat healthy. When we would go down to the sandy riverside , he enjoyed rolling around in it, the a big shake getting it all over us😊

I'd love to repeat the comment I left for a Komondor as I love to talk about my boy. I grew up with a Puli dog. What a fine boy he was! So independent and intelligent, he rode a bike with me. He was sitting on a trunk like a second bicyclist in a human pose with his front paws on the back of my saddle. Each time I took a bike out, he would get so excited. When he wanted to get into the house from the yard, he wouldn't move until someone said, "Please come in". No one taught him that, he just decided so. I don't think we did everything correctly with his coat but we certainly did our best. It was pre-internet time, we didn't even know we had a Puli. Some kids tried to put him in a dumpster when he was a puppy, a driver from Grandpa's work rescued him and took to the workplace. That's how he ended up with us. Grandma didn't even know she had a dog before a black cloud started sniffing her leg in the night. She got so scared she almost killed Grandpa. :D He was like a brother to me, we danced together and I taught him tricks and cleaned his coat. He had his own bathtub outside. Only recently, 13 years after his death, I was talking about him and it hit me -- I can Google a dreadlocked dog on the internet. I saw the photos and literally cried for so long. We always thought we had a mixed-breed dog and that we won't see another one like that. I'm biased but he was certainly a cutie, even compared to his own breed. To think that he almost ended up in a dumpster! I would love to have a Puli someday when I have a house of my own.

She loves adventuring outside and we love how happy it makes her - even if it means extra grooming and cleaning! Rosie has a sister, Rocket, 5 months old. They have the same parents and are from litters 3 years apart. Rocket isn’t a mop yet (more like a feather duster) but she will cord in a few months and we will probably be walking around with two black mop dogs soon enough!🎉

Despite all the benefits that corded fur has (and looking so darn cute), it is a LOT of maintenance that anyone looking to own a corded dog should be made fully aware of beforehand. You're either going to need a _really_ good groomer on the budget, or a _really_ big bathtub and a lot of time on your hands to groom them yourselves. Don't let the comfort of your dog's cords become a burden!
@mygirldarby
@mygirldarby 7 ай бұрын
Yep. Or you can just get them shaved down every 3 or 4 months. I think that's the best way. Those cords must be so heavy and without regular baths, they attract a lot of dirt.
@MrsJolene-
@MrsJolene- 7 ай бұрын
@@mygirldarbyI don't think you're allowed to shave these dogs, their hair doesn't grow back the same when you do. I thought that they needed natural, never shaven hair to cord well. Best is probably, prevent her from getting dirty, brush out the uncorded bits regularly and keep up with the cords before they matt up.

OMG this dog is gorgeous. Her cords were so fluffy after drying & I prefer my hair to look fluffy instead of smooth. I have locs too but they're only back shoulder length. They already get heavy when wet so I can imagine how heavy her coat was while shampooing & rinsing. I let my hair air dry, after using a towel to squeeze most of the water and it takes about 4-7 hours to completely dry! you did an amazing job, I have never been this invested in watching dog videos, but I binge watch yours when I have free time!

She does wear a mask. Almost every time she uses the high-velocity drier. She's been doing this long enough and is professional enough, im sure she knows all about groomers lung. Also, you're onyl assuming she does flea-dips or pesticide work, because she's never shown that on her channel. Maybe she doesnt allow dogs with fleas in, since she does this in her home and has many dogs of her own. And as for water/soap, with modern moisturisers, I'm sure her hands will age at a standard rate and not be any worse for wear. I'm also certain that the dog shampoos she uses is way less damaging than, say, grease-fighting dish soap. @@Memow-pk1ng

its really intriguing to see the similarities between dog coats like this and my own hair! people never realize how high maintenance it is to naturally have highly textured hair. sometimes washing it can take up to 40 minutes, and your arms and fingers get super tired and worn from working over your head that intensely. the same is true with debris getting stuck in the hair and not being able to come out easily, so it just gets washed (multiple times, mind you) with all the rest. and thats even before we talk about the hour or more just combing through it and styling it back into a basic non-fancy maintenance style just to stave off the hair's desire to mat. so much said was true, about not wanting to scrub the hair in the cords due to making them frizz up and tangle more, making a bigger headache for all involved or at worst a fairly impossible endeavor of a mess to fix, and things like how the hair behaves like a sponge and just soaks up whats applied to it, making soaping and degreasing a task. all in all, its heartwarming to see the recognition of having to employ entirely different techniques and methods to deal with a coat of this texture, as well as its correlation to humans like me with similar hair

Puli's need that, too. With a Puli/poodle/komondor coats, you have to grab the cords, and pull each one apart down to the skin as they grow out. You have to twist them and separate them into 1" sections as they grow in, their hair does "naturally cord" but you have to set the size and spacing as it grows or else you'll end up with monster sized ones that pull and bruise the dogs skin, or tiny ones that rip out easily and then the dog has nasty bald spots and broken ends. She showed the maintenance of them here, but setting them as they first grow in is a big job that takes MONTHS

I watch YT groomers in serbia and latvia who do free grooms on neglected and abandoned dogs, and this breed is the most abandoned. People over there eventually realize that this is a high maintenance dog and abandon it. They are picked up in the worst condition with chunks of matter and dirty fur. Very sad. On these channels, they shave the dogs and adopt them out with the suggestion of keeping the coat very short. Good video. You are so patient.
