I'm an old man. Born 14/09/67. I've heard thousands of vocal and/or instrumental pieces in my life. I consider myself to be somewhat of an authority on "good or it sucks" performances. Take that as you will. It's not very often that I am impressed with live versions of studio performances of even my favorite bands or solo acts. And I have to say that this live performance by the Doors is absolutely without exception one of the best versions by an artist whether you enjoy their music and/or style or not. This live recording has such soul gripping perfection that it's able to entertain and satisfy even those who aren't even a devoted fan of them or their music. I'm so thankful it was captured and survives to this day. And also invokes the question of how many more perfect performances didn't get captured and never again will be heard or seen. Of the hundreds of performances that were done, many by the Doors were ruined because of Morrison's drunken and overindulgent drug use and sucked ass because of it. But this one, thank God, shows just how well Morrison could entertain when he was somewhat sober and his vocal and stage presence was a thing to behold. Even if you aren't a Doors fan give this at least one chance to see if it does get your attention. It's well worth the chance. This is only my opinion and and not necessarily anything other people agree with or care about but it's your loss if you live the rest of your life and not ever experience it at least one time...

I was in the Navy when I bought a cassette of Alive, She Cried that contained this track. I wore that Elektra Records tape out, never got a digital version of it when CDs came out and then hunted around for the album and the track every once in a while. Elektra discontinued this album after the 1991 release of the double album, In Concert, featuring all the tracks on Alive, She Cried as well as tracks from recordings of other concerts between 68-70. I was surprised to find that for this version of Light My Fire, two DIFFERENT concerts were cited as the source recordings: a Jan 18, 1970 concert in New York (Felt Forum) and an April 10, 1970 concert in Boston. What? How is that? Well, it turns out that the track I had played over and over from that 1983 tape, Alive, She Cried was not actually a recording of a single performance. In other words, no person ever heard this particular version, ever, as far as I can tell. But if you listen to the range of live performances of Light My Fire now available on Amazon music, you will realize that there are actually excerpts from more than two concert performances of Light My Fire that make up that 1983 Electra track on Alive, She Cried. For instance, the bulk of Robbie Krieger's guitar jam is definitely from the second performance of the Doors' July 21, 1968 concert at the Aquarius in LA (tune to 05:24 to check it), but Ray Manzarek's organ jam is definitely NOT from that July performance at the Aquarius. Further, to get the guitar segment for the Alive, She Cried track from the 83 production, the Aquarius guitar performance had to be edited (shortened). The Graveyard Poem recitation segment from the Alive, She Cried track was also not spoken while the band played LIght My Fire, as far as I can tell (even though there are numerous Jim Morrison recitations or, at least, comments in the midst of the band's concert performances of Light My Fire through the years); this recitation of Graveyard Poem appears to have come from that April 1970 Boston concert (Second Performance). That 10pm show had them play a nearly 6 minute version of Light My Fire that transitions just after Manzarek's organ jam into 30 seconds or so of Fever played continuously against the Light My Favor organ/"bass" line which then transitions into several lines from Summertime lasting about a minute against the base/organ lines of LIght My Fire which leads seamlessly into Robbie's guitar jam for Light My Fire lasting another 7 and half minutes (for my money one his best jams) during which Krieger works in a few bars of Coltrane's version of My Favorite Things. At the end of the Light My Fire guitar and another return to Summertime, Morrison urges the crowd and eventually the band to slow and soften the down, until he recites St James Infirmary Blues sans music. That then leads into the Graveyard Poem recital, again with no LIght My Fire playing in the background (the band does strike a few notes here and there, but they are not playing any song). At the end of Graveyard Poem, the band picks up again and finishes Light My Fire, with Morrison rambling almost incoherently through the final chorus. The basic point is that that Alive, She Cried Light My Fire track which many of us seemed to have treated as a canonical live version is a Franken-track--it was pieced together from several versions of LIght My Fire played live in various concerts. All I have to say is, the Doors' producer for that 1983 Elektra album Alive She Cried, Paul Rothchild, sure fooled me. I always thought that was a single performance of Light My Fire, not a spliced together production. Amazing. (For more on Rothchild's production work with the Doors, and splicing to produce studio albums, see his interview with Blair Jackson from July 3, 1981 (before the Elektra Alive She Cried album release): archives.waiting-forthe-sun.net/Pages/Interviews/OtherInterviews/rothchild_bam.html

I first saw the Doors on July 28, 1967 at the Fillmore Auditorium in San Francisco. We went hoping to hear "Light My Fire" and "Crystal Ship" but what we got instead was "When the Music's Over," a song of almost horrific ferocity. I wrote a book about the Doors. "Some Are Born to Endless Night: Jim Morrison, Visions of Apocalypse and Transcendence." It took 4 1/2 years to write and explores the revolutionary philosophies and literature behind his song lyrics. He was an Oracle of Apocalypse!!

Revolutionary perhaps in the personal, individual sense but he was no instrument of Marxist/Communist thought and ideals that many hippies and most modern day leftists are brainwashed and indoctrinated into... and subsequently try to paint everything with.

It was the greatest night of my life. Although I still had not found a wife I had my friends Right there beside me. We were close together. We tripped the wall and we scaled the graveyard Ancient shapes were all around us. The wet dew felt fresh beside the fog. Two made love in an ancient spot One chased a rabbit into the dark A girl got drunk and balled the dead And I gave empty sermons to my head. Cemetary, cool and quiet Hate to leave your sacred lay Dread the milky coming of the day.

One of the few songs that I have ever heard that if I listen to every beat from Densmore and Krieger and obviously Manzarek, topped off by Morrison's passionate screams it makes me get choked up and teary eyed. Without fail.

Ape 93, thanks for the video. Around 1989 or 1990 I listened to the Doors nonstop. I was already very addicted to alcohol but didn't know it yet. I was a 14 year old kid, only knowing that when alcohol was mixed with weed and LSD et cetera, life was amazing. I still, at 47, miss this period of time. I still try to relive it. Thank you.

There's a lot of great electronic music. The doors were experimenting with that sound before there was a such thing as electronic music. Ray Manzarek praised some of the evolution of electronic music in the 90's and there's a well known video of Morrison prophetically predicting the future and electronic music. Do a search for it.
