For me, the period from '65 to '76 was the greatest period for rock music and the Doors are one of the reasons why.

I was born in 1949 December 9 I grew up with the DOORS 17 in 1967.❤ Strange enough, I was in Rock n Roll Circus July 3, 1971.i was on leave in US ARMY traveling Europe in Paris, France.Jim died in women's restroom of China white heroin which potentance was 90 % killed him on the sport...I'll tell you more later...

Right? I feel a little like a parent or older sibling watching them react to music I grew up with (The Doors were a bit before my time, though I came to appreciate them later after beginning to play guitar myself). Like my brother did with me, hearing his music and getting into some of it (Queen, ELO, Kansas, early Van Halen). It's fun.

Great reaction as always. Lex is so adorable. One note: whoever put this video together got some of the lyrics wrong. It's "an actor out on loan" and "sweet family will die" Just fyi. And their comment during Ray Manzarek's wonderful keyboard interlude about it being too long is just silly. It's perfect. Lot's more awesome Doors songs for you guys to check out. Thanks for doing this one.

Where did you get that lyric from? An 'actor out on loan' doesn't make sense in the context of the lyrics. 'Actor out alone' makes sense but in fact it's 'an actor all alone' that I hear him sing (as in alone on stage or on set). It might be influenced by Shakespeare who wrote 'all the world's a stage, and all the men and women merely players'. Having heard him repeat it at the end of the song, it does sound more like 'actor out on loan'. Now I don't know.

@@heliotropezzz333 It, in fact, IS "An actor out on loan". In the Golden age of Hollywood, actors weren't free agents like they are today, they were signed by a particular studio to make movies for them, and they didn't necessarily get to pick and choose which movies they made either. They were signed to studios like MGM, Warner Brothers, Paramount, RKO, etc, and that was their employer. Studios would sometimes loan out an actor to one of the other studios, maybe as part of some deal, or maybe there was a producer or director who really wanted a particular actor for a role, there were various reasons why an actor would be "out on loan" from his studio employer. Morrison had been living in Hollywood and had once gone to film school at UCLA, so it seems fairly certain he would've been familiar with the term.

Saw them in Seattle live on a Pier. Ian Astbury sang for them. They played this song as the sunset over the ocean and the sky was purple, orange, red, blue, black all swirled together. Gorgeous sky. Very religious experience as they played this song...I will never forget that moment, even after death.

One of their best songs from their later efforts before Morrison passed. For another great Doors epic try When the Music's Over or The End, those are incredible tunes that will trip you out. Doors hypnotize 50+ years on. Enjoy! 🎹🎸🎶

The session for this song was the last time Jim Morrison was known to have sung before his death. While in Paris he told Ray Manzerek, the keyboard player, that he was looking forward to coming back and playing “Riders” live for an audience. However, he never came home.

Agreed! Certain musical ideas require some time to express. Also....I just have to say this since I don't see it written anywhere else...the song was released in the LATE 1960s when SO MANY people were experimenting with HALLUCINOGENS. One aspect of that drug group is that it can do STRANGE things to one's PERCEPTION of TIME (like slowing it down a lot). A long keyboard solo took people someplace (in their heads, man!).

I go to a lot of gigs and, as a huge fan of The Doors, this thought often goes through my mind when I look at the show times. There's an excellent tribute act still around though and you should definitely check them out. They are 'The Doors Alive'. Æ 🙏

The Doors did an amazing variety of music, but it all has something special going on. This is my favorite, simply because I think it exemplifies the greatest strengths of each of the members of the Doors - Jim Morrison's voice and the poetry of his lyrics, Ray Manzarek's genius on keyboards, Robby Krieger's guitar, and the simple but perfect drumming of John Densmore.

Lex is spot on here, it's so jazzy. It's got a very "dimly lit, smoky club with your favourite whisky, whiskey or bourbon" feel to it for sure. A "hot toddy" fits too, as that's basically whisky or bourbon with hot water, honey and lemon. Maybe some additional spices if you want. Pretty simple and tasty. Now you just need to react to "Touch Me" and you two will have gotten to the three songs that wore out at least two cassettes of "The Doors: Greatest Hits" on my walk to school in the 80s. I would rewind Riders, The End and Touch Me to listen to them at least 2-3 times before letting the cassette play on in my Walkman.

A dark little note in case no one else has mentioned it yet, but the “Killer on the road“ mentioned in the first verse of this song is actually referring to a very real person named Billy Cook who went on a spree killing and carjacked a family on vacation. He made them drive him around while he committed other crimes until he finally killed them all. That’s why they say “if you give this man a ride sweet memories will die“. Yeah it’s a bit of a dark tune.

When this first hit the airwaves people were calling it "cocktail music", due to Ray Manzarek's dreamy keyboard playing. Now of course, people see the darkness in the song. Jim Morrison released an alternate version on his album "An American Prayer", that expands on the "there's a killer on the road" verse. Very interesting.

@@CAPTEINRIGGS yeah this dude is just making up facts. This album was portrayed as their “comeback” album, due to the fact that the doors were shunned everywhere due to morrisons legal case. Only person who called it cocktail music was their ex producer paul rothchild, he then left them to produce the album themselves. It was produced by bruce botnick, needless to say paul rothchild ate his own words when he heard the final product and saw how successful the album came to be, its a masterpiece!

I take your point but it would depend on the video. Some people will create a new video for a song and be too literal with the visuals. As if we don't know what the song is describing! They come off as corny and unimaginative!

Lex has a good ear for this kind of music. The Doors played a kind of jazz/blues fusion, very much in line with Lex's "speakeasy vibe." Also, Morrison (the singer and songwriter) was a hardcore alcoholic, so there's that. Ray Manzarek's brilliant keyboard work made Morrison's incredible poetry into songs that stick in your head long after you hear them. The band was known for their eclectic jam-style sets. Or so I've read; I'm too young to have seen them in person.

As always, great reaction by Brad and Lex! This is my favorite Doors song. I use to listen to it all the time on a 45 rpm record. Yea, I know that that's dating myself.😁 The vocals are fairly simple but the piano and guitar made the song great. Let's not forget the drummer who did the wonderful thunder sound effects! You really can't go wrong with the Doors.

@@StevenEverett7 OK, I thought you knew something I didn't. The rain and thunder effects came from sound effect tapes owned by their record label, so they just mixed that into the final mix. One thing most people don't know is that Morrison's whispered vocals underneath his lead vocal is the last thing he ever recorded. A lot of people don't even realize that the entire lead vocal is also being whispered under it until you tell them, then suddenly they go Oh Wow I never noticed that before!!

This version is sped up. How odd. I will say this was the first song I tried to recreate on my Mom's Keyboard when those advanced ones came out with drums, record-able parts for playback, etc. leaving me to play the base key fills with one hand and the other free to hit buttons, recalling parts I previously saved. Pretty cool. (a step up from her Lowrey Magic Genie 98)

Hey y'all, back in the '70's and early '80's some of the rock stations would play bands like this for hours on end late at night! This would usually be on Fridays or Saturdays and would always be late (after midnight) and you could just sit and listen and really get into their music. This was always different than hearing it played on the radio during the day! Great reaction!

The problem with fan made lyric videos is that they often get them wrong. "Like a dog without a bone, an actor out on loan." Not an actor out alone. That said, an all time classic. Never get tired of hearing it. That keyboard from Manzarek is both jazzy and funky without being jazz funk.

Lex got her groove on. I remember hearing this song on a.m. radio my grandmother had playing on top of the fridge, oddly though I didn't get into the doors until much lat in my life but Jim's voice absolutely grabbed my attention. Was still a child but it got my attention great voice. Listen to touch me and love her madly great songs great singing.

Driving home from work late one night, driving down a winding canyon road in a rain storm when this song came on, it was appropriate and eerie. Made me smile and turn it up. I always like the eeriness to the lyrics which is due to Jim Morrison laying down a track with singing the vocals, then he went back and did vocals again whispering, it is laid over the original vocal track, if you listen close you can hear both

God I love The Doors. Their lyrics are some of the hardest to figure out which isn't surprising bc Jim Morrison was a super weirdo and was on one drug or another most of the time. This song is so cool. It's got such a jazzy vibe to it. You guys should watch the movie "The Doors" where Val Kilmer plays Jim Morrison. Great movie and so insightful to thier story.

It's unbelievable how good the music was back in the 1960's. I'm not really a fan of 'Acid Rock', but I really like this one. There are so many songs from that time that are just beautiful to listen to. One song I have on my playlist is "Magic Carpet Ride" by Steppenwolf.

This inspired a great movie with Rutger Hauer - The Hitcher, 1986; He says into this world we're thrown or something similar. Jim Morisson read philosophy I think it's a nod to Heidegger's idea of 'thrownness' (Geworfenheit)

Damn both of you for "stealing" my comment, lol! I love that movie, and Hauer was so effective in his performance. Scary as hell. Come to think of it, I suppose that's another movie that could be held up as an example of how to subvert the expectations of the audience in a proper manner, instead of the "deconstruction for it's own sake" sort of tripe we see today. I really should give it another watch; it's been maybe 20 years. The young woman in it was excellent too, was that Jennifer Jason Leigh?

"How do you sample this? Into a rap song, that seems tough." I sampled this. lol I took bar of the baseline from the beginning where the rhodes had a particular hit (I think at 0:54 on this video), looped it, then played my own rhodes over it, added some kick/snare boom bap, and a bop is born. I did it like 25 years ago and the beat is on a disk in storage. But it exists.

I listened this song many times in last 25 years and newer seen lyrics until now, and I see that I all the time hear wrong this part : "Sweet memory will die" , I always heard "Sweet family will die"

I'm not a die-hard Doors fan like many here, although I do like many of their songs. But I can listen to this one on repeat! So chill! Brad, another place you may have heard the song is on an episode of "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia". They mentioned on their podcast they weren't sure if they would be able to get it. But they did, and it's one of the most expensive songs they've used on their show.
