@sourisvoleur4854 I mean, I could not agree more. Such an inventive song that was a bit outside The Doors usual wheelhouse. Part pop, part jazz, part music that even Sinatra could sing. Old style crooners music. All wrapped into one great tune. Then there is Jim. What a great voice. If he had wanted, he could have sung the phone book. My fantasy is that he put out an album of American Standards like Linda R. did with Lush life. But sighhh. We will never know. RIP, Jim, along with my beautiful angelic Karen Carpenter.

Harri, whenever you get to The Doors' song, "The End", in addition to using the studio version, also make sure that you do NOT use a lyric video. Jim tells a suspenseful story, with dramatic pauses, that are ruined by lyrics appearing on the screen before they've been sung. In fact, I'll copy a good link for you to use right here, so you can save it. Or better yet, do the reaction next! But be prepared for its length, as the song runs for nearly 12-minutes. Trust me, though, it will not seem like it at all--it only seems half that long, it's that captivating. "The End": kzfaq.info/get/bejne/eL6hg7Gd082apX0.html

This is an example of how certain performers have some special elusive quality even when their performance seems deceptively simple. There is nothing about this performance that is technically difficult… and yet it there is something strange and hypnotic. But, I think none of us can say exactly why
@kelvinkloud

well said.... lyrically also. this has a blake, whitman or frost vibe to it. like thos poets, it uses approachable phrases. simple lyrics wh/ on one level almost seem too simple. yet if you let the narrative play out, put the imagary symbolism together, it starts to get much denser & wide scaping in its metaphorical meaning. as well known as the doors are, they are nevertheless underrated & misunderstood.

@@kelvinkloud Yes. It is interesting how, over time, there in a winnowing. Certain artists fall by the wayside as their saccharine unoriginality loses its appeal. @@MrArdytube the stones over branded themselves. also in fairness they stayed around so long that they couldnt maintain the edge from wh/ their brand was built around. at their best, the stones were very talented. & jagger at times was a very talented lyricist in his own right & obviously very bright like morrison. but even in their heyday I dont think there was as passionate as the doors were. morrison seemed to be playing for keeps in re to the meaning & mission plan behind his artistic drive. for the stones it seemed to be more about dominating music. morrison's take it or leave it approach has made their best works (assuming one likes them) have a deeper affinity w/ people. more eternal. that would make jim happy imo if he was still around. he & the band were inconsistent, but when it all came together they were very special & took it over the fence. its good to see people still reexamining that & enjoying it.

@@kelvinkloud Yeah. I just thought it was interesting how comparatively little buzz there is around the stone… particularly relative to their reputation back in the days… of course the same is somewhat true of the Beatles as well. Maybe in both cases. Added attention may seem redundant. That said…. Jagger’s frenetic performances were certainly a major attraction, but seemed a little forced to me…. And in that way, sort of contrived ….just my opinion tho

Many radio stations were playing "Riders On The Storm". This is the quality of music I became used to hearing. I believe there were people that COMPLETELY forgot who their favorite music singer or band was and immediately went and bought this album. In order to compete with this song musicians needed to have talent. And brother we the public were the beneficiaries.

Robby used to come into the shop in SFV and get his skis tuned and waxed. Years later my dad told me he once interviewed with Ray and Jim at the Roxy in Hollywood to join the band and play bass (he played in Steppenwolf) but during the interview Jim got into a fight with his GF and they left in the middle of it. That was the end of that - they only used studio musicians.

There were So many iconic Artists from this generation. Jim Morrison was a genius, a wordsmith, literature, mythological scholar and definitely a rebel. His addictions killed him. His crassness, alcoholism covered up his intellectual and very sensitive self. In my opinion he died because he was disillusioned and heart broken. His Father held him in disdain. Like Vincent Van Gogh, his world collapsed and broke him in two. He was arrested multiple times while performing because of marijuana, indecency and language. He was loved and morned all over the world.

Huge Doors fan here. Saw them in 1968, 69, and 70 when I was in college. Still listen to their music today. My list of songs: Break on Through - from their first album and I think it may be the best opening song on any album from the era; it begins with a bossa nova rhythm on the drums and soars into jazz-blues. Soul Kitchen - a tribute to an all night diner in Venice, CA that Morrison used to visit in the wee hours of the morning. Light My Fire - the seven minute version. Back Door Man - Willie Dixon blues with added testosterone. End of the Night - elements from the French novelist Celine and the English poet William Blake. The name The Doors is from the Aldous Huxley book The Doors of Perception and an extended metaphor from William Blake to represent Blake's idea of mans' limited perception to the world around us. The End - it begins as a farewell to a lover and morphs into a long, Freudian intonation on the Oedipus problem. This is only from the first album. More later.

wh/ shows were you at? .... wh/ was best? .... how do you compare the doors live to all the other great talent of that era? ... i was too young to see them live but have been a longtime fan. imo, their music has aged better then their peers b/c of how singular & devoted it was. plus morrison's lyrics imo, have an eternal cyclical element to them that also were very keen into reflecting & displaying the unique inner workings of the modern western culture. morrison could be inconsistent, but when on his A game, he was a giant. underrated in that sense imo how good and insightful a lyricist he was... interested in your takes.

@@kelvinkloud I saw them in Columbus, OH in 1968, Pittsburg in 1969, and Detroit in 1970. I was in college at Ohio State at the time. First time I liked the music a lot, but the set was fairly short. Ended suddenly. It was rather odd. The Pittsburg show was kind of a mess with people rushing the stage, yelling, and lots of shoving by the many police who were there. Best show was Detroit in 1970 at Cobo Hall. There is a double album of this show - Live in Detroit - with 25 songs. The show was one of the longest ever done by the band and it was fabulous. Lots of great blues and the band was as tight as a rock band can be. Started about 9:00 PM and was not over until after 1:00 AM. Police tried to shut them down at midnight but Morrison urged the crowd to stay. The show finished with the house lights on. In those days I got to see The Who, Jefferson Airplane, the Dead, The Band, The Rolling Stones, The Byrds, Led Zeppelin, Creedence, Joe Cocker, Hendrix, the Beach Boys, The Hollies, The Mothers of Invention, Procol Harum, Taj Mahal, Chuck Berry, James Cotton, BB King, and a bunch of other bands in the 70's & 80's. The Doors in Detroit was one of the best show and I give chops to Procol Harum(seen twice) who were amazing live along with The Band and the Stones. The Who were on their Tommy tour and that as a great show too. The show in Detroit is the one I remember the best of all of the concerts I saw in those day.

@@johncurran6031 wow. thanks for the account. those are all well known shows if you deep dive the doors history. Ive listened to those detroit cuts & you are right, they were very tight.... cool you caught all those other bands too. people of your age, arguably grew up in rock's apex. the density and quality of music in that era was staggering. there was great music before & after, but I dont think there was ever the same density. wh/ brings me back to the doors. there is a real mystique around the band, partly marketed by the band, plus morrison dying young. yet, there is also the quality & singularity listenting to them even now imo. question to you, since you saw so many bands and great leads including daltry & jagger, seeing morrison live, did he truly have the charisma & trance like ability to get a crowd into his hands that you hear about & see glimpses of on film? ... in your memory did he stand out vs all other singers in that regards? ... there are devoted doors fans as myself, but I got to say, imo, the band doesnt get their due of how great they were when they were on their A game. perhaps the inconsistency & legal problems along w/ the image marketing has hurt that.... since you saw them live & so many others, did he stand out as really special as a performer? & did you sense by '70 compared to '68 that he was falling apart physically or is that overrated? ... thxs again for your takes.

@@kelvinkloud Jim Morrison never moved around the way Jagger and Roger Daltry do. In the shows I saw he mostly was pretty still at the mike & would move around a bit to watch Manzarek or Robbie play a solo. In Detroit, when the cops tried to make The Doors stop playing, Morrison just spoke his piece about wanting to play more but di d not exhort the crowd or scream about the situation. I have seen the Stones several times too and Jagger is pretty much the focus of attention. Last time we say them was in Phoenix in 2019. For the first time I realized the core of this band is Charlie Watts, the drummer. He is the engineer on the train. Mick is the conductor and has a major role, but I think the leader of the band is Charlie. My impression, but the sound system in the stadium gave the drumming more of an audible life without being overwhelming. I have seen concerts where the sound mix is bad and if the drums are too much, it ruins the show. I had no sense that Morrison was in trouble physically or emotionally at the Detroit concert. I thought the band was a good as I've ever seen and heard. His voice was great, the music was outstanding and the show was one of the best I've ever seen by any major band from the 60's. Second best was the Stones in 2019. Third best was the Eagles in March 2015. This was Glenn Frye's last tour and they were awesome. Saw them at the Verizon Center in Washington, DC from the 5th row in front of the stage.

Harri, that's a great shirt, the pattern of which is reminiscent of a rainstorm. Check out the 1970 film called Le passager de la pluie (Rider On The Rain) directed by René Clément and starring Charles Bronson. It really has a similar feel. There's also the 1965 novel Deux cavaliers de l'orage (The Riders of the Storm) by Jean Giono. It's possible that Jim Morrison, who studied film at UCLA and who left us in France, wasn't influenced by either the film or the novel. The Wikipedia entry for the song says that Jim was inspired by '(Ghost) Riders In The Sky: A Cowboy Legend,' which is an equally haunting song, Heidegger's concept of thrownness (human existence as a basic state), and spree killer Billy Cook. Whatever the case, whatever are or aren't the influences at play, it's a spooky and catchy number and it was cool to check out your reaction.

I think your on to something re giono novel. few things got by morrison in that time period. he was a sponge reader & had a deep memory bank.... the song is covertly deep upon more and more listening & examination. it uses simple less abstract symbols & themes then other door epics, but is deceptive in how it weaves those images into very laden metaphor w/ an eye on the modern amer culture & the west. its more mature. also its got very clear narrative lines along w/ excellent atmospheric musical arrangement, so it lends the mind to being very visual & cinematic. one of the doors top 5 songs and as powerful in a more subtle way as the end or WTMO.... it was also very prescient for the times. hippie idealism & the love generation was imploding & morphing into something potentially more uglier and nihilistic. theme wise its a warning but also a ray of hope option. amer at the crossroads. the hitcher the catalyst and metaphor for one road the culture could take & was already going. the other option of riding on thru the storm, piecing things out, finding love, family and sustainment are also presented as an option. all just as the decade was starting. think how prophetic he was. both options played themselves out for the boomers & culture. some indeeded imploded as heroin & mindless violence (bundy etc) grew & spun more out of control by mid 70's. yet other found healing, love, family, survival & growth. forest gump reflected on same theme w/ Jenny & forest right after he left nam. too bad morrison didnt live to do more. wouldve loved to see him do more w/ film screewriting or direction.

Have always felt a connection to these lyrics. Jim was such a poet. My vision of the lyrics...Being born and eventually being thrown out to the world (and it’s storms). The challenges and loves encountered are all riding the storm as we struggle to find our way in this world. That is my take on his poetry. As far as musicians, incredible piano along with the rest. Another tragedy to lose a once in a lifetime talent at such a young age...imagine what he could have done had he lived longer. Rest In Peace Jim. 🙏

You're born into a family and thrown into the world with no experience, but, when you fake your death, you're have no family and lots of experience, you can go search for that bone, no longer are you playing a part in someone else's movie. The evidence demonstrates that he was still alive in Sept. 1977.

When The Doors first came out, we were all in a cult like state with the fantastic music & Jim Morrison’s voice just mesmerized us as well as his staring at you was hypnotic 🎶😻🇨🇦☮️💜. Jim Morrison left the world way too soon 🥲

Let me bring you up to date on this music by taking you back in time. Where I grew up in Georgia we didn't have a lot of activism about the Vietnam war in 1965, but we knew down deep within us it was very much smashing just about everything that was important. On college campuses everywhere were riots and Kent State hadn't happened yet but it nearly had many times. Then, along came the Doors with this music. In the South it was considered to be so radical, so anti-establishment, that we were fearful when we listened to it in our small town college that we would be caught out and arrested perhaps, so we listened to it in our dorm rooms quietly and playing it very low in case someone heard and reported us. In the meantime, the entire government oppression machine was gearing up to make Jim Morrison and the Door's lives hell, and they sure did. Watch the movie. But in the dorm rooms late at night, we just about worshipped them for where they stood artistically and how they brought to us, on the waves of that beautiful music, the real truth. So when you hear Ray Manzarek on the keyboards, just how incredible it is, think about how government forces heard it and set out to destroy it...and him, if they could. That's what we're up against all the time, whether it's out there where we can see and curse it, or whether it's in hibernation just waiting to break loose again. Riders on the Storm is about something way deeper than you think, and that killer on the road whose brain is squirming like a toad, it's more than just a hitchhiker. It's a great big government killing machine, so don't give it a ride or sweet family will die. Our government considered our lives to be cheap and disposable. It's better now, but don't think it's gone away, it hasn't.

‘Touch Me” is a brilliant Doors track, a bit jazzy and a pretty funky too, I think you’d really enjoy it, others here will probably suggest ‘The End’ too, and rightly so it’s an incredible work of musical suspense, 11 minutes long and yet you’d swear you were never there for more than 4 or 5

I saw a Doors cover band long ago called Riders on the Storm. That was back in the 80's and I was pretty fried to say the least- I'll leave it at that. But, that night I might as well have seen the actual Doors- that's how great these guys were- The Jim Morrison guy COULD have really been him- they did the End and the whole rep perfectly. Best cover band I ever saw.

Keep up the good work, man. Love this song, Ray Manzarak's keyboard work is beautiful, those crystal clear runs evoking trickling rain are genius. Thank you Harri so much for correctly saying 'instrumentation', instead of what the majority of reaction channels do and keep saying 'the instrumentals', when they're just talking about the arrangement and the instruments used in the backing tracks and there's clearly vocals over them. Now if you could only reclaim the term 'Coda' instead of the 'Outro' I'd be a happy musician.
