Resistant to performing on T.V. The Doors did go on the 'Smothers Brothers' show, which was considered a bastion of liberal hippie thinking! CBS Censors battled with the Boys comedy, so it seemed a natural fit for our heroes! The T.V. ratings were off the chart. The taping of the show was Dec. 6th, 1968.

@@brucekay9290 According to Krieger in his book about the Doors, Jim had been drinking, as usual, and it was a mistake, normal for Jim though, he was almost always drunk or semi drunk. The band's instrumental support was actually pre recorded, they weren't actually playing live but Jim's vocals were not, which is why the miscue was in there.

Legendary mythical status is only achieved by dying young. Jim knew this so well. It’s partly why he had a death obsession - John & Robby say “death wish”. Jim wanted mythical status, and far from doing anything to prevent it, he did everything he could to reach it, as he wrote “those who race toward death…those who wait, those who worry.” Jim wasn’t going to sit around growing old and waiting for death - he was going to run towards death and towards mythical fame as fast as he could. Bob Dylan will always be legendarily famous long after he’s gone. But he would’ve only been mythically famous if he’d checked out young.

We watched the Smothers Brothers Show every week. Our parents were against the war from the beginning. Our dad was/is a high school history teacher. 8:10 *Very* surprising mistake by John about the Ed Sullivan Show. What he was probably thinking was that it was the Ed Sullivan Show where they had Jim sing. It was -- in my opinion -- a great point in music/TV history because Ed got Jim to promise he would sing "better" instead of "higher." Naturally, Jim sang the song as Robbie wrote it and The Doors were banned from the show. _Ed was pissed_ But really, imagine the nerve of inviting a band on the show and then when they arrive asking them to butcher their own lyrics. Jim was right to sing it as written. If you haven't seen it, check it out. Jim's finest moment. Hit the ball waay out of the park.

Still playing on rock stations across the nation and they've been out of circulation with the original band line up for over 50 years. A testament to there awesome talent and mystical creativity, never to be repeated again. Sadly, the entire 60s early 70s era,the best ever in history will never be duplicated. In The Beatles, whoever wrote the song pretty much was the producer of the song. They had to rush through the White Album (in order to meet a contractual obligation to the record company), so in many cases, they were recording more than one song at once, with John in one studio room, George in another, and so on. Paul, being the most adept at playing several instruments well, often played some or all the instruments because the others weren't available to play, and he had to get the songs done. He also played drums on a few songs when Ringo temporarily quit the band.

*John Deathspell* You stupid dumb fuck. Yes The Stones WERE vastly overrated and pushed by the media being their fake rebel darlings. But the Grateful Dead, The Beatles and Led Zeppelin were the 3 greatest bands of that era and changed everything, even more than the Doors: Get off the 'Hippie shit' cliches. It was they who made the best music and I don't mean the media Hippy dippy crap. Jim loved the Grateful Dead too being great friends with PigPen. He knew what was up. Iron Maiden just suck. Weak 12 year olds music! Just to make things clear I like Slayer, Megadeth and QOTSA. You like 2nd rate teen music. Every time some asshole talks about 'Hippies' negatively (Jim was very much part of that era and movement that was BOTH light and Dark (see Vietnam war, Steppenwolf, MC5, The Stooges) and then goes on about rock music just shows he is a macho idiot who knows nothing. Go watch Live 'Dazed and Confused' from the 'Song remains the Same'. (And btw Maiden's rhythm they keep repeating ala Run to the Hills is copied from 'Achilles last stand'). More heavy than anything by Priest etc (they are not at all bad, just no where in the Hendrix, Beatles Zep league and they know it too being like Sabbath huge Zep fans; after all that Zep song became their template). As for twin guitar Thin Lizzy did it and the Eagles too, Jimi Hendrix and Jimmy Page played like two guitars. Now grow up Pygmy brain and learn!

From Royce Hall (UCLA) to France, we miss you Jim (& The Doors). I heard them at the Santa Barbara football stadium in 67 (ish). The lights were turned off because J.M. was getting frisky below his belt. Then J.M. asked/demanded the light be turned on, which happened. But after the 2nd time, the "man" kept the lights off. Amazing music, amazing times. If you remember the 60's, you weren't there? Trippy times. If you never tasted a fruit (like a peach), how'd you know what it tasted like? You wouldn't. Likewise with the 60's, and it seems to be all over the world. Peace, love, freedom and understanding was in the music and everywhere. It was all coming together. Think that didn't meet resistance. Funny thing was, the nation didn't "get it" (the whole 60's thing) in the 60's. It took the nation years, till the 70's and then the rest of them started to come around (who were going to make a shift). Of course it was getting obvious back then that it was getting sold out, so the "Death of a Hippy" celebration happen on day at Golden Gate Park. There was Eugene McCarthy back then, and now there's the "Our Revolution" now with Bernie S. The beat goes on.

Loved your story, I saw them in West Covina, Jan. 68, the first show he was 'dead-on' second show, dead on his feet...I was a McGovern campaigner in the L.A. area, had a 67 VW Bus, moved to Encinitas, surfed and played Hippy, thought we'd change the word, but, money, disco, and cocaine hit the scene, and that was that...So, I try to keep the message alive in my small way, lame as it may be...we have the memories millions would die for, and like Jim, some did, Thanks for watching my film, rock on Maan!

For a couple of clean-cut, all-American folkies*, The Smothers Brothers turned life upside down. *They were first and foremost musicians, every bit as solid as Peter, Paul, and Mary or The Seekers.

Incredible band were "The Doors" and due to the "lyrics" of "Light My Fire" at "The Ed Sullivan Show" which "The Doors" were told not to say, "get higher" which was dumb, they were never told to ever come back to the Ed Sullivan Show.

Rumor has it that CBS president William Paley did not want the Doors on any CBS program; largely because of what had transpired one year earlier on The Ed Sullivan Show.....but he gave in; largely because The Doors were "box office" and because program head Mike Dann had suggested the network move towards a younger, more urban audience....
