Found a Stereo gold label record pressing today at a local record store in Houston tx but they might of gotten the Sticker description of it wrong because it is definitely a first pressing from 1967 and not from 1970 . It is a monarch pressing with MR on one side and Mon on the other and it sounds amazing! Other than being in VG close to VG+ condition it plays quiet and loud.

Thanks for the video. And I agree with audiophile pressings --I don't like them, they're too "clean" and everything sounds too "separate". T Rex Electric Warrior everyone raved about the remaster, but it's too polite. From now on, I think I'll simply wait and invest in OGs pressing of albums I love

That is awesome Bill. That is the one in my opinion if you are a gigantic fan of this record. To me it's almost the equivalent of an "RL" mastered Led Zeppelin II. If you are ever interested in selling you know where to find me. Haha!!!

Fantastic video!! Thank You!! I have 2 copies left of this lp....turns out to be your number 3 and your number 2. I have never heard your number 1, either in stereo or mono. I did go back and listen to the DCC, and I agree....it does sound pretty sweet....but....it is lacking the rawness and special presence that originals can sometimes convey. You are right....this lp is raw and that rawness isn't felt the same way on audiophile pressings most of the time. I am now on the hunt and will report back with my findings... I have been very surprised lately as some og's have sounded better than some really fancy audiophiles!

Thank you very much! I too went back and listened to the DCC recently and I think I could have given it more praise. It really does sound great. I have contemplated selling the AP 45rpm, but it's The Doors and I can't bring myself to do it. Do a google search of "The Doors first two albums Steve Hoffman" as I think this will help with your search. So few original pressings of the first two Doors albums used the master tape. This forum helped me obtain the 2nd pressing Monarch (louder side 2) of the Self-Titled and my first pressing Columbia Pitman Strange Days. This pressing is the only reason I did not get the DCC for this title. Good luck!

@@steveatvinylrecordnetwork4452 The other DCC title I have is Waiting for the Sun. It really really wallops on Five to One!! Your review and thoughts really got me to thinking about this lp. I spent hours searching for which specific pressings had the possibility of just the M on both sides (there weren't many). I sent emails out and got lucky...there it was...play graded vg+, just the M on both sides. I couldn't believe it!! Should be here in a week or so. I'll keep you posted. What can you tell me about Strange Days? Same story?

@@michaellourie4252 Congrats!!! Would love to hear how it sounds. As far as Strange Days I almost pulled the trigger for a DCC recently but the AP is real nice. Because I don't love the 45rpm format and prefer originals, my go to is a NM Columbia Pitman CP-1 on both sides. This pressing along with the Monarch Mon-1 on both sides are the only two standard pressings of Strange Days not to use a duplicate tape.

@@steveatvinylrecordnetwork4452 I got my S/T lp in today....Monarch....the seller wrote the deadwax down as (M) on both sides, but it turns out to be a (MON) on side 1 and (M) on side 2, which is backwards from your copy. Interestingly I really really like side one with the (MON) on it. It sound MEAN. You can feel Jim's rage. I have never heard a better side 1 of the lp ever!!!!! So now for side 2 (M). It sounds pretty darn good. Analyzing the song titles, I think the (MON) mastering is better for side 1 and the more reserved but still awesome (M) is better for side 2. I actually prefer the (MON) mastering for side 1 than I would have if it were an (M). How very interesting!! I will now have to go back and listen to the AP45 and decide whether or not to keep it. I may let it go. This Monarch copy and the DCC should do me superfine.!! I've got a CP-1 of Strange Days coming soon. I am so curious to see how it sounds. Great video Steve! Like you, I have Monarch stereo and mono pressings from 1967 with the Witmark credit on Whiskey Bar. The stereo pressing is exceptional, just like you say. The bass on Back Door Man shakes the walls when cranked. Almost like a LZ II Ludwig cut. Mine seems to be the reverse of yours, with (mon) etched on side 1 and (m) etched on side 2. Agree the mono just doesn't match the stereo, although an interesting listen.

Nice assessment and thank you for watching. I do prefer the (M) side. Wish I can find one in great shape that had (M) on both sides. It is a little jarring to hear the EQ differences when listening to the whole album. Mono is interesting for Morrison's voice and Densmore's drums. Wish it was not so distorted.

@@michellekostivitch3768 You are happier than you would be with the mono. Though mono is Often more kick-ass, on this one the tape was such a mess that it's not. VMP did a good job with the voice, but Krieger's guitar is so fuzzy and distorted that it works when the guitar is in one speaker and the organ in the other but out of the same speaker? Mud - most noticeable on the first track. It gets better from there on.

Great video, I have the ones you mentioned although my monarch is the one with the (m) on both sides, it also has a spelling mistake on "oher" instead of other on BOT. It's a great sounding pressing but l'm on my 3rd exact copy of that pressing and I just can't seem to find one that isn't noisy. I've had a vg copy and 2 vg +. All noisy. I would rank the DCC a hair above the MON but as I say I don't have a MON copy that isn't noisy. Being from Canada I also have a first Canadian press and it sounds great, it's clean and I would say it's pretty close to the top of the heap. The 45rpm is disappointing sound wise although the others in the series sound great.
@steveatvinylrecordnetwork4452

Thank you. Some people prefer the compression that is added to the MON pressing to give it a loudness boost, but I prefer my Side 1 (M) and wish I had a true first pressing with (M) on both sides. I am just glad mine is in VG+ condition as this record is almost impossible to find a NM copy. The more I listen to the DCC the more I am impressed with the sound quality. Many Canadian pressings sound really great because the stampers didn't get as worn as they did in the states since smaller quantities were pressed.

Wonder if the Canadian pressings use the same lacquers as the US pressings. In my experience with various releases in general, Canadian pressings typically use lacers which are Canadian cut and sound inferior to US pressings (which use Sterling, Masterdisk, TML, etc cut lacquers)@@steveatvinylrecordnetwork4452

Thanks for the video! I have the Rhino release and the AP 45 rpm version. I keep hearing the DCC pressing beats the AP. So!… from an accessibility standpoint and also from a clean vinyl standpoint, would you say the DCC is my best option for sound quality of this album on vinyl?
@steveatvinylrecordnetwork4452
@steveatvinylrecordnetwork4452 Жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching. The DCC beats the AP because AP didn't have the original tapes. From a clean vinyl (which an original Monarch will be difficult to find) and sound quality the DCC is a great option but you will pay 4X the price as the AP. You can still go on AP's site and pay $60 for a brand new copy.

Looks like? No bar code and no "gold record" sticker. Check discogs for runoff numbers. It's not too hard to find an early stereo but as for early mono? I have one (only VG) and it's a bit rough. The VMP not only cleans up the music, it cleans up the distortion, so it's worse.

I have heard it is an upgrade over the 2010 and 2017 Mono reissues. Not sure how they did it as I thought the Mono tape was lost a long time ago and even the VMP was digital. I could be wrong. Either way I am glad you like it and I will have to check it out at some point.

The first one you listed is the true first pressing and I wish I had that one. I have the second one you listed and compared that in my video to the DCC, AP and original Monarch Mono. It's still my favorite, but the louder bass on side 2 is not as appealing in my opinion as the more organic sound on side 1. Some people prefer side 2 that way, but not me. I am happy to have my copy in the condition I have, but I would prefer the true first pressing as opposed to an early first that is EQ'd on side 2.

I'm sure it's not the same. I'm not a audiophile. I'm a huge Doors fan. In the early 90's when I was a teenager, I had a boom-box that had a stereo/mono switch. Whenever I listened to this on cassette, I always listened to it on mono. I didn't like the drums/bass coming out of one speaker and the guitar/organ coming out of the other. At least Morrison's vocals were in the center.

I didn't know there were boom-boxes that had stereo/mono switches. That's wild. About the only good thing about The Doors first album in Mono is how present Morrison's vocals are in the mix. The Strange Days Mono mix is excellent.

Outside of the debut which did use the original tapes, the 2012 Analogue Products vinyl is very good. I am not familiar with any vinyl reissues from 98', just CD. I have heard copies with (COL) in the deadwax which I believe are the Pitman pressings are very close to the Monarch. There is reason to believe the Monarchs are the only ones that didn't use a duplicate tape source back in 67'.
